Step back into the culturally rich Heian Era, a time when temples and gardens flourished. You will visit famous Byodo-in Temple, where the Phoenix Hall reflects perfectly off the pond. This elegant building is even featured on the back of the 10 yen coin. Enjoy the traditional gardens and flowers at Kajuji and Mimurotoji Temples.     Famous for its lovely Heian-style gardens, this quiet temple also has a lake and seasonal flowers in all four seasons.
  • Daigoji Temple and Sanboin (45 minutes)
    20130904054704_1507214408_3077_9 This World Heritage Site is one of the most representative examples of 'shinden-zukuri' architecture from the Heian period. From the veranda you can gaze at the beautiful gardens and rock formations, and inside the buildings the sliding screen doors are decorated with depictions of nature.
  • Byodoin and Uji (110 minutes)
    8517177 Explore the area around the famous Byodoin Temple, and see the Phoenix Hall which graces the back of the 10 yen coin.

  • Mimurotoji Temple (40 minutes)
    Also known as the 'temple of the flowers', this temple surrounded by mountains was built in the Nara period. Situated above the Uji River, the picture-perfect gardens extend all the way down to the riverside.
  • Manpukuji Temple (40 minutes)
    This temple is deeply influenced by Chinese architecture, and in fact until 1740 only Chinese monks could serve as the abbots of this brilliant temple. Make sure to check out the statues of Indian and Chinese deities dotted around the grounds.
