Taketomi is famous for its traditional village, protected by clay shisa (guardian dogs). Relax and take a ride on a water buffalo cart.
Taketomi is a small island which lies just a few miles to the southwest of Ishigaki, making it a popular day trip. As it is very small, you can use the charming water buffalo carts (where you may be serenaded with Okinawan songs) or rental bicycles to check out all the local sights.
Swim at the Kondoi and Kaiji beaches, known for their turquoise waters and views of nearby islands. Walk around the traditional Ryukyu style village, under the watchful guard of the shisa, statues of dog guardians which are said to bring luck.
