Morning Nakanoshima Course Walking Tour of Osaka in English
Discover Osaka's center of business and culture, thriving since the Edo era. Walk along the riverside, visit the historic locations of Ohatsutenjin Shrine and Teki-juku and stop by various shops.
Stroll around Osaka in the morning and stop by some of its hidden historical gems. Get a taste of both the modern and historic parts of the Nakanoshima area. First take a look at the underground department store "depachika" in Umeda Station where you can find all sorts of snacks and sweets to buy as souvenirs. Walk down Midousuji, the main street of the city which is lined with ginkgo trees. Then start the historical leg of your tour by visiting the Tsuyunoten Shrine (Ohatsutenjin) with its interesting history, Teki-juku, the school of Dutch studies which opened in the 18th century, and the riverside of Nakanoshima.

Depachika (Department Store Gourmet Floor)Depachika is the nickname for the basement of department stores, where you can find a ton of yummy foods and sweet treats.Check out the seasonal displays of Japanese sweets, taste various kinds of Japanese sake, and see (or buy!) the elegantly arranged bento boxes.
MidousujiThe main street that runs through Osaka from north to south.
Symbolic gingko trees planted on both side are beautifully illuminated in winter.
Tsuyunoten Shrine (Ohatsutenjin)A historical shrine downtown, people also call this shrine Ohatsutenjin. It was named after the heroine of a famous sad love story that happened near here in the 18th century. It has become popular among young couples.
Teki-jukuA school of Dutch studies opened in the 18th century. The building is Japan's only remaining school for studying sciences in Dutch.
One of the students was Fukuzawa Yukichi, the face of the 10,000 JPY bank note.
NakanoshimaThis area has long been the center of business and culture since the Edo Period.
Along the riverside, there used to be warehouses of feudal lords from all over Japan. Walking along the water's edge of the river is relaxing and refreshing, while you drop by historic places.
