Winding Road

Reviewed by: Dianna N, 2019/03/15

The road leading up to Nikko is quite famous and the journey is beautiful! While the Shrine is also very beautiful esp the woods at the back, make sure not to accidentally join the students' tour. We joined our guide as well but we realized that it would have been a better experience for us if we took everything in by ourselves only as that would have given us a semblance of peace. Some might enjoy going with the group though. To each her own! Also, we missed the falls! Yup, we did. We didn't understand our guide. We thought we were merely going to a parking lot.
I have to say that this tour has the best lunch!!! I'd love to have that set again!

A magical place

Reviewed by: Umniyah , 2018/07/19

Nothing represents Japan better than Shinto shrines and breath-taking sceneries and that is exactly what Nikko has to offer !

The place is classified as a world heritage centre for a reason ! The carvings and paintings are marvellous , i very much enjoyed the optional 207 step hike to the tomb of tokugawa ieyasu !

Our traditional Japanese feast was very popular & filling , and kegon falls offered the perfect combination between Japanese sweets , water sound & magical visuals ..

Highly recommended

It's ok

Reviewed by: Hoai My Winder, 2018/06/22

The shrine was extremely crowded as one would expect visiting such places in Japan. However, it was very loud. I had been to Meji Shrine, Enoshima Island Shrine and despite the crowds there, it was relatively peaceful and quiet. Not so in the shrine in Nikko.
The waterfall was nice as so was the lake.
The drive out of the waterfall almost made me loose my lunch.
The lunch option was wonderful so I recommend that.

  • I recommend adding the lunch option

Lástima de niebla!

Reviewed by: Jorge, 2018/05/11

Los templos son magníficos. Lastima que por la niebla no pudimos ver ni el lago ni la cascada. La guía fue amable y profesional, la comida sabrosa y el conductor lo hizo estupendamente en esas reviradas carreteras.

A lovely tour and well worth the 3 hours bus trip.

Reviewed by: D Van, 2018/02/12

Our tour guide was very knowledgable and had a great sense of humour. Everything was very organized and the bus trip was very comfortable.
Nikko and Kegon falls was just beautiful even in the cold. I would definitely do this tour again at a different time of year as i imagine it to be stunning and lush in Spring, Summer and Autumn. It was a day well spent.

Not worth it

Reviewed by: Barb, 2017/04/22

The temple was amazing but you can easily get there by bullet train on your own. The tour is really rushed. You get very little time at every stop and feel like you missed out on a lot of things. The Japanese lunch was absolutely incredible, very tasty and a neat experience. The waterfall was a let down. They take you to the free viewing deck and you have 15mins to take photos, walk around and use the washrooms. On our way to the washroom we saw that we could have paid to go down to a lower viewing deck and face the water fall. We would have liked to do that but weren't told it was available and wouldn't have had enough time for it anyways. Go to the temple on your own, it's walkable from the train station. The waterfall is out of the way and would be tough to get to without a car rental. The guide was delightful and provided a lot of information about Japanese culture, customs and the people. Get ready for a long day on a bus. Be on time.
