Surrounding the center of Suwon, Hwaseong Fortress was built in the late 18th century by King Jeongjo to house the remains of his late father, Prince Sado. Located just 30 kilometers south of Seoul, a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a perfect afternoon adventure.

The fortress wall stretches for approximately 5.5 kilometers and has a large variety of military features, with four main gates facing each of the cardinal directions, turrets, and sentry towers. Despite numerous invasions and wars in Korea over the past century, about 75% of the wall remains intact.
