Thank you for the wonderful meal. The tea I had was incredibly delicious, and I can still taste its sweetness and aroma in my mouth. I can't forget the scenery of the tea room. Thank you for allowing me, a foreigner living in Japan, to rediscover the beauty of Japan. My sister, who is visiting Japan, was also very happy and said she was thrilled to experience Japanese traditions. Lastly, I was even more delighted when a cat appeared, creating a lovely memory. I went with my family, it was our first time in a tea ceremony and the whole experience was incredible. The tea master is incredibly and, although he does not speak english, they give you an english document with all the instruction. A lady translated us what the madter was saying. Fantastic experience!
Such an amazing experience!

Our tea ceremony master was amazing! They spent the time to explain every aspect of the traditions and symbolism throughout the ceremony and made us feel welcome. We learned about the history, art, and motions of the tea ceremony. We truly appreciate their translator who assisted the master and made our experience all the better! If you are looking for an very one on one style of learning, definitely book this event. We will be spreading the word to all of our friends who go to Tokyo!!

The owner was very kind and friendly, and my two friends who were experiencing tea ceremony for the first time seemed to really enjoy it without feeling any pressure. I usually practice with the Urasenke school, so it was interesting to experience a tea ceremony from a different school, Kobori Enshu.

On the day of the experience, I was a bit nervous at first, but I was warmly welcomed by a very calm and friendly teacher and his wife. As we chatted, I completely relaxed and was able to enjoy my first tea ceremony experience at my own pace. My friend found everything to be fresh and very interesting, asking various questions.

When making the reservation, there was a questionnaire about general age and gender, and based on that information, they selected the sweets and tools we would use on the day, which I found very thoughtful.

The sweets we received were delicious, so I asked for the store's information and walked there after the experience, but unfortunately, it was already closed due to the late hour. I plan to go back and buy some another time.

My friend was truly satisfied to have experienced the long-desired Tea Ceremony and expressed a desire to participate again if the opportunity arises.

We're were so glad we took the time to do this class.
The suburban setting was lovely, the Master tea maker demonstrated patience in the face of our ignorence, and despite our total lack of Japanese and our hosts limited English, we're got by well with notes supplied in English, and google translate.

We were greeted at their gate, led to their front business door and switched from our street shoes to their special sandals and directed into an informal Japanese meeting room with a tatami mat and small floor table where we put on their special one-toed white socks and then their sandals. We then went over several sheets of their English/Japanese explanations of each of the steps of the tea ceremony explaining words that are spoken and responses that are given. There is a lot of symbolism and purpose for each movement throughout the ceremony; specific movement and placement of the handheld fans, preparation with tea scoop and whipping utensils, and finally the making of the teas themselves. The ancient tea bowls used are passed down in the family through generations. The Tea Master picks a theme for each ceremony and chooses three items to depict that theme in a special section of the room (rooms can vary in size and roof height--commonly low ceilings required scooting into the room on your knees on the tatami mats and scooting around to the themed wall) and then you scoot to your tea position lifting yourself with the flat part of your fisted hand and then sitting with your lower legs under you bottom. The tea is brewed over a small pot of special wood in the corner of the room. When completed we exited and reviewed the ceremony back in the community room we started in and they answered our questions as best as they could with their daughter's translation. It was a very personal experience.

I apologize for the late response. I believe that your experience studying Japanese in Japan has provided you with an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. The space of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility is something that is not easily encountered in daily life, so I think that a seat lasting over an hour was quite a rare experience. We look forward to your next visit.

Both my friend and I brought along two boys (ages 13 and 14) who didn't know the first thing about tea ceremony, but the atmosphere was bright and relaxed, allowing me to rediscover the charm of tea ceremony myself. We were able to fully enjoy the beautiful tea bowls and tea room, which provided a completely different experience from just drinking green tea and eating sweets at a cafรฉ. From putting on tabi socks and entering the tea room, to appreciating the flowers and hanging scrolls, we immersed ourselves in the entire culture of tea. Since we received an explanation of the procedures at the beginning, even I, who had forgotten everything since my few hours of tea ceremony experience in high school, was able to enjoy it. I signed up for the shortest thin tea session, considering the attention span of uninterested teenagers, but in reality, we spent nearly an hour and a half, and although they were initially reluctant and thinking of ways to skip it, they ended up having a great time. It's surprising to find such a relaxing oasis just five minutes from Shibuya. Thank you very much. I have seen reviews mentioning that the price is high, but for such an experience, this price is truly a bargain for such a valuable experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience. The light tea course is listed as 30 minutes, but based on past customers, it often takes over an hour, and in some cases, up to two hours. If we also include the time to view the tools, it inevitably takes that long. There have been customers who were inconvenienced due to tight schedules, so I have been informing them of this beforehand. However, I believe that to truly enjoy a peaceful and calming tea experience, we cannot cut corners, which is why I continue with this pattern. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the happi I gave you. Although you initially seemed uninterested, you observed it very well. The experience of spending over an hour enjoying tea will surely remain in your heart. Please feel free to introduce this experience to your friends so that more people from the UK can savor the tea time. I will do my utmost to create a space of harmony and tranquility. Recently, there was a terrorist incident in France. I believe it is important to recognize and respect each country's culture to break the cycle of hatred and create a world where we can respect one another. I sincerely hope to convey Japanese culture without destruction or disappearance. We look forward to your next visit.

My sister and her husband, along with their son, wanted to experience authentic tea ceremony in Japan, so they made a reservation. Since none of them speak Japanese, the tea room owner's wife kindly came to pick them up at the station, thank you. If there were an interpreter well-versed in Japanese culture, it would have been an even more wonderful exchange. They are all very satisfied.

I initially provided the Japanese and English instructions on how to enjoy the light tea, but I struggled to explain various details effectively. Especially during this summer season, I have prepared various tools to create a refreshing atmosphere, and I am anxious about how they were perceived. On the floor, there was a rubbing of the character "water" from the calligraphy of Rikyลซ, with white flowering smartweed blooming by the water, and the lid rest was a figure of a child peering into a well. The front of the hearth was adorned with a reed screen and Rikyลซ grass. The sweets were served on a blue hand-blown glass plate, featuring "flowing water" nerikiri from Fลซrindล Main Store. I considered serving cold tea at the water preparation, but since it was your first experience, I thought it best to stick to the regular preparation rather than a simplified one, and you endured the heat of the charcoal in the kettle. While trying to explain the tools, I attempted to mention that the natsume with the design of the Enshลซ diamond is marked with the crest of Kobori Enshลซ, but when it comes to such detailed explanations, I felt the frustration of the language barrier. I realized I need to learn a bit more English conversation. When you visit again, I will strive to explain better. I look forward to your next visit.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. A few days before your visit, students from the University of Minnesota had the opportunity to experience a tea ceremony. Since there were more than 20 participants, we divided them into two groups to enjoy the tea. At that time, I created a guide outlining the flow of the tea ceremony and provided it to you, which I hope you were able to translate into English. It had been years since I last attended a tea ceremony, since my student days in club activities, but this time I was invited by a friend to participate.

Wagakuan is located in a quiet residential area, just two stops from Shibuya on the Inokashira Line. The spacious entrance, beautifully swept and with water sprinkled, featured a large flower vase elegantly arranged with seasonal flowers, heightening my excitement and anticipation for the upcoming tea ceremony.

As I proceeded through the wooden gate beside the entrance, I cleansed my hands and mouth at the tsukubai, then entered the tea room through the nijiriguchi, and the tea ceremony finally began.

With a pleasant sense of tension, I learned the proper etiquette while enjoying refined wagashi and thick matcha, and after a brief intermission, I had some dried sweets and thin tea. We all shared that space and savored the world of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

When I think about wanting to experience Japanese culture, I find it wonderful that in that one room, I could experience not only the flowers and calligraphy but also the tools and the mannerisms. Perhaps it was the character of the host couple that made it so, as I was able to enjoy the beauty of Kobori Enshu's tea without feeling any pressure.

It was a wonderful time experiencing the adult pleasures that I didn't understand during my student days. Thank you very much.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed "adult play" in the world of "Wa, Kei, Sei, Jaku." It was worth the effort to provide you with hospitality. It is quite challenging to incorporate more tea into daily life while maintaining decorum and formality, but I will continue to strive for that. I hope many more people can enjoy the pleasures of tea, so please come again with your friends. We look forward to seeing you.

I visited the tea ceremony with a friend who was experiencing it for the first time. I had attended large tea gatherings several times, but this was my first time at a private seating for just the two of us, so I felt a bit nervous as we approached the ceremony.

As we entered the space through a well-maintained garden path, the pleasant scent of incense greeted us. After taking our seats and admiring the tatami, hearth, kettle, shelf, and water container, the tea preparation began. The richness of the thick matcha served in a generous bowl after enjoying sweet confections was exceptional. The scroll displayed was "Originally Nothing" by the previous head of the Kobori school, Kobori Sลtล. The kettle was a fine, thin-rimmed style favored by Enshลซ. As we listened to the explanations, we slowly enjoyed the tea and admired the utensils.

After stepping out for a moment, we returned for the thin tea, where a single daffodil adorned the alcove. The atmosphere changed dramatically with the new arrangement of the folding screen, shelf, and water container, and the removal of the sliding door's curtain brightened the space. As we discussed various utensils and the history of tea, time flew by, and we ended up spending over two hours there.

During the two servings of tea, we had a wonderfully luxurious and enjoyable time. I wore a kimono, which I felt contributed positively to the atmosphere of the tea ceremony.

While tea ceremonies are typically held at specific times, this event allowed for scheduling based on participants' availability, which I thought was excellent. I was also excited to hear that they could arrange ceremonies for celebrations or memorials, and I looked forward to requesting a personalized ceremony.

On our way back, we stopped by the nearby Japan Folk Crafts Museum, where I was delighted to find a Korean tea bowl on display that looked just like the one we had used for our matcha. We chatted about how we should order a course with a meal next time as we made our way home.

This ceremony was held a 5 minute walk from Komabatodaimae Station. There was very much an โ€œat-home styleโ€, with that impression strengthened by the renovations that were ongoing.

After a short explanation of the activities, we were then taught the proper usage of the 'tsukubai', a stone wash basin, and the manner of entry into the tea house itself.

No matter the questions we asked, detailed and informative answers were very forthcoming. The differences between the 'koicha' and 'usucha', the tools of the tea ceremony, sweets, etiquette... After learning all of this, I feel that I'll never be embarrassed at a lack of knowledge at any other tea ceremony I join.

Both the tea and the sweets were delicious! From start to finish, we sat in a calm and dignified atmosphere.

That said, I can not recommend this tour if you want a very formal experience. Instead, this felt like a wonderful visit to the house of a friend. If are looking for a chance to learn about the basics of tea, this is highly recommended.
We were given a paper with tea ceremony terminology. If there was one thing more I could want from this, it would be a guide to the basics of the tea ceremony, including specialized vocabulary, that I could take home with me and read.
Also, the expected tour time was much shorter than what we spent there, as we enjoyed a fantastic conversation with the teacher and his wife. I was also able to take a commemorative photo, for which I'm grateful.

The decor of the tea house, draped in seasonal flowers and the tools of the ceremony, was a sign of high quality, I felt. If you think of this as just a chance to eat sweets and drink tea, the price seems quite high, but as a chance to study traditional culture, it is very reasonable.

When they opened the door there was a wonderful smell of flowers, coming from a large vase. The tea master, his wife and daughter welcomed me with a cup of cherry blossom tea. We chatted, and I relaxed immediately.

At the sound of the bell I was led to the tea room, stopping at a little stone fountain to wash my hands (they even left a towel there for me). The garden is covered in beautiful moss, and the sound of water flowing takes you a world away from the residential area it is actually located in.

After entering the tea room, perfumed with incense, I got to see all the beautiful tea ceremony utensils. While explaining the utensils and ceremony, I was served a sweet and then the thick tea. The contrast of sweet and bitter was perfect. A true moment of bliss!

Next was the 'thin' tea. Since it was close to Christmas, the tea master selected cute snowman and snow inspired decor and sweets, which I thought was a nice touch. We chatted for a while, and it was a a truly a refined experience. The art of tea actually touches on ikebana, calligraphy, art and proper manners, I feel like I learned so much.

I am so glad to have taken part in this experience, thank you so much and please continue promoting this part of Japanese culture!

Just one thing: while I had a really wonderful experience, the price may be a bit scary for people less familiar with tea ceremony?

A trip into a different world

Less than 10 minutes from Shibuya station, we entered a totally different world.

A lot of my preconceptions about the specifics of the tea ceremony, like using monotone utensils or the degree of the strict manners, proved to be wrong. It was cool to learn more about this world.

I took part in the Review Rebate campaign, and was a little worried about what exactly what the 'thin' tea would be. Once there, the master explained the difference, and I excited to try them both.

The 'thick' tea took me aback at first, because it looked like the deep green of a still pond! I was a bit hesitant, but after the first sip was pleasantly surprised. The tea was not at all overly strong or bitter, in fact it has a sweet aftertaste.

While it may be a bit pricey, this kind of experience was truly authentic and one of a kind.

After the experience, I was busy preparing for New Year's gifts and Christmas presents for my grandchildren, who gather at our home every year. With the year-end sales at work and the New Year's gift sales following, I found it hard to sit down and focus... After the experience, I was busy preparing for New Year's gifts and Christmas presents for my grandchildren, who gather at our home every year. With the year-end sales at work and the New Year's gift sales following, I found it hard to sit down and focus... Today is my first day off in a while, but for someone like me who hasn't written anything for decades, it's quite a struggle (laughs)... So please forgive me for the delay in sharing my experience!

I usually don't feel satisfied with just a little snack and tea while traveling, so I found a Tokyo sightseeing optional tour site and thought, "Oh? This is it!" I quickly jumped on it and made a reservation, even getting a discount for immediate participation!

Warakuan is located about a 5-6 minute walk from Komaba Station on the Inokashira Line, nestled in a quiet residential area that feels far from the city center. Upon opening the door, a pleasant aroma greeted me, and the flowers arranged in a large vase welcomed me with a "welcome." The owner, his wife, and their daughter kindly greeted me and guided me to the room, where I enjoyed sakura tea while engaging in cheerful conversation (the tension eased). Eventually, led by the sound of a bell, I passed through a sliding door and stepped onto the stepping stones, carefully maintained with lush green moss. As I turned a corner, I heard the sound of water from the tsukubai, where towels were prepared (a thoughtful touch). Entering the tea room elevated my spirits, and I admired the hanging scroll, incense container, water container, tea container, and the boiling kettle before taking my seat. The main sweets were served, and the tea ceremony began. As I received a detailed and easy-to-understand explanation of the tea utensils from the owner, the ceremony progressed. After enjoying the beautiful and delicious main sweets, the thick tea was exceptionally bittersweet and gentle on the palate... truly a moment of bliss!

After leaving my seat, I returned to the tea room for thin tea! Adorable Christmas-themed sweets shaped like snowmen, snowflakes, and snow candy were served on a black lacquer tray, and I applauded the owner's unique arrangements! Our conversation flowed, and I savored the lightly frothy tea (smooth, sweet, and easy to drink), fully enjoying the wonderful and elegant atmosphere.

According to Okakura Tenshin's "The Book of Tea," the source of Japanese culture lies in tea, and through this experience, I felt I understood a bit about how tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, painting, and etiquette all stem from it. I'm glad I could participate in such a program! Thank you! Cheers to the advancement of Japanese culture!!

<One more thing!>
I think this plan is a very good initiative unlike any I've seen before. However, as an experience, it might be a bit pricey? It takes courage to participate. I think it would be better to reconsider how to make it more accessible for young people and foreigners. For example, how about keeping the high, medium, and low courses at as low a price as possible and creating a topping course for participants to choose from? It's a very good initiative, so I support you. Good luck!! Take care...!

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughtful experience despite your busy schedule. It brings me great joy to know that you felt the essence of Japanese culture through tea at Warakuan. This is always at the forefront of my mind when preparing the tools. It brings me great joy to know that you felt the essence of Japanese culture through tea at Warakuan. This is always at the forefront of my mind when preparing the tools. I feel strongly that there has never been a more crucial time for the tea that was developed during the Warring States period, when figures like Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Rikyu were active. Just recently, there was a terrorist attack in France, resulting in many casualties. In today's world, where conflicts are frequently reported, I believe that if the ideals of "wa, kei, sei, jaku" (harmony, respect, purity, tranquility) spread in people's hearts through tea, we could create a more harmonious world. I apologize for my personal thoughts, but this is the feeling with which I create the tea experience.

Regarding the pricing, I have received feedback from some that it may be a bit high. When people say that 5,000 yen for tea and sweets is too expensive, I can understand that perspective. However, I do not want the Warakuan experience to be just about drinking and eating. I hope you can fully enjoy the time spent from when you enter until you leave. To achieve this, I select the best possible tools and prepare delicious tea and sweets. I will also serve the tea with a heartfelt spirit of hospitality. The preparation for the tea ceremony begins a few days in advance. In a way, you could say that the host's time is included in the price... that said, I would like to consider this further. For now, I will offer a 20% discount for groups of five or more. I am committed to creating an experience that is worth the price, so I appreciate your continued support. We will also make arrangements for various occasions such as entrance celebrations, coming-of-age ceremonies, memorial services, and anniversaries, so please do visit us again.
