Prambanan Temple Compounds
Dating before the 10th century, the Prambanan Temple Compounds is Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex. The ancient Javanese compounds comprise of the main Prambanan temple complex, Bubrah Temple, Lumbung Temple and Sewu Temple.
Prambanan began as a Shiva shrine that expanded until its abandonment before the turn of the 10th century. The temples were found again by Javanese villagers, who associated myths and legends to the archaeological site, the most famous of which is the Rara Jonggrang legend. Visitors can follow the Ramayana epic, also engraved on the temples' bas-reliefs. Prambanan is a day trip away from Yogyakarta and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991.
