Built between the 8th and 9th centuries, the Borobudur Temple Compound in central Java is a complex of conical stupas built on three circular tiers, on top of a pyramidal temple with five terraces. Adorning this remarkable Buddhist monument are over 2,000 bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the Buddha's life past and present.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Borobudur is collectively listed with two other Javanese temples namely Mendut and Pawon. Borobudur had undergone an extensive restoration before it was designated as a UNESCO site in 1991.
