Once we entered the safe zone, we encountered a bear! It was almost about to be canceled, but we were able to complete the tour. Thanks to the guide's careful explanations, we felt at ease throughout the experience.
We visited the Sakura Falls, which the guide introduced to us, and we were able to see the cherry salmon swimming upstream, which was fantastic. On the way back, we had Ezo deer.

I experienced a full loop hike around Shiretoko Goko with a group of ten, including our guide. It had snowed the night before, leaving some snow on the ground, muddy areas, and droplets falling from branches above as we walked slowly. We encountered untouched nature, trees marked by bear claws, trees dug up by bears, areas of skunk cabbage where bears had lain down, and trees intertwined with vines that bears had pulled. Our guide provided a lot of explanations, and the three hours flew by.
The weather in nature can change quickly, and although it wasn't great weather, it was a very good experience. I must say, it was really great that our guide was a veteran.
As for clothing, I felt it was essential to consider the temperature and wear waterproof gear, even if you don't have rain gear. I wore waterproof sports clothing and a full set of rain gear to keep warm.
ガイドさん含めた10人で知床五湖大ループ全周散策を体験しました。前夜に雪が降り、足元には所々に雪が残り、泥濘、上からは木枝から雫が落ちる中、ゆっくりと歩き進み、手付かずの自然と熊の爪痕が残る樹木、熊が掘った樹木、熊が寝そべった跡の水芭蕉地帯、熊が蔓を引っ張り蔓と一体化した樹木等、沢山、ガイドさんからの説明があり、あっという間の3時間でした。

Thank you very much for your help over the two days! This was my second time in Shiretoko, but last time the weather was bad, so I couldn't see Lake Mashu or go hiking in the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Thanks to you considering our requests and planning multiple times, we had a wonderful trip to Shiretoko. The guide maintained a comfortable distance, allowing us to relax and enjoy ourselves. The staff were very friendly, and I was able to enjoy my time there. Unfortunately, it rained that day, and the temperature was in the single digits. However, by the time we started, the rain had stopped, and we could explore without getting wet! It's a bit disappointing to think that we could have seen even better views if it had been sunny. I had a valuable experience in a natural heritage site that is not easily accessible!

I participated in the Shiretoko Five Lakes group tour. On the day of the tour, we started at 9:50 AM with a total of 9 people, including one child. However, shortly after departing, we received information about a bear sighting, and we had to turn back without seeing any of the lakes. Thanks to our guide, Ayano, we decided to try again in the afternoon. In the afternoon, two more people joined us, bringing the total to 11 (including one child) as we started again. We visited the Fifth Lake and Fourth Lake, but once again, we received information about a bear sighting and had to turn back. In the end, we attempted the tour twice but were unable to visit all five lakes.
Ayano, our guide, was very knowledgeable, and I had a great time during the tour. However, when there are many people in the group, if you are at the back, it can be difficult to hear Ayano's explanations. Even if you can hear her, the line moves forward when you want to look at something, which was a bit disappointing. When there are children in the group, they tend to move ahead quickly, creating the impression that the group is moving at a fast pace. I think it would be better if the guide could ensure that those at the back also have time to listen and look, or if the group size could be limited to about five people. This way, it would be easier to experience the tour while seeing the actual sights.

当日は9時50分スタート、他のお客さん(子供1名)と合計9名でガイドしていただきましたが、出発して早々に熊の出現情報が入り、湖を1つも見れずに引き返しました。ガイドの綾野さんの提案により午後に再挑戦することに。午後には2人増え、合計11人(子供1名)でスタート。五湖、四湖と回ったところでまたまた熊の出現情報が入り引き返すことに。結局２度挑戦しましたが、五湖すべてを回ることはできませんでした。ガイドの綾野さんは知識が豊富でガイド中はとても楽しく過ごせましたが、対人数が多い場合、後ろの方にいると綾野さんの説明が聞こえません。また説明は聞こえても物を見る時には列は進んでしまっているので、ちょっと残念でした。お子さんがグループにいる場合、どうしても子供は前に行くのでサクサク進んでしまう印象でした。後ろの方にいる方にも説明はもちろん、見る時間も確保できるように進んでもらう、もしくは対人数を5人とかにしていただけると、もっと実物を見ながら聞きやすく体験できるんだろうなと思いました。

Thanks to the guide's thorough explanations, I had a fun time for three and a half hours. There was blue sky, and although visibility was poor due to clouds, it cleared up quickly, allowing us to experience the rapidly changing mountain weather. The surface of Lake Kussharo reflecting the blue sky was incredibly beautiful. I walked along the ridge with excitement, and for the final summit attack, I crawled my way up. I also appreciate the guide for their polite responses to various questions from the time of booking until the day of the tour. I would like to take part again in the summer.

I participated in the tour in early November, at the end of the season. There were many news reports about bear sightings nationwide, which made me anxious about signing up for the tour, but it turned out to be a great decision.
First of all, having a guide made a huge difference in terms of feeling safe. I was able to truly enjoy exploring the Five Lakes. Additionally, walking through the forest while learning about animal tracks and interesting facts about plants that we would have missed on our own made for a deeply meaningful experience.
It had rained the night before, and the paths were muddy, but the guide had prepared rubber boots for us, which was a big help. While it's easy to wish for sunny weather, the misty, cloudy atmosphere of the Five Lakes was also mysteriously beautiful, like a painting.
I would love to visit again in other seasons. Thank you!

The guide had 43 years of experience, making them a very knowledgeable and veteran guide! We were able to take a walk while listening to valuable stories about Shiretoko Goko, the surrounding flora and fauna, the environment, as well as the history of the land and interesting anecdotes, which made for a deeper experience of Shiretoko Goko. Thank you for kindly answering our questions and accommodating us for photos at various spots. I had heard that November in Hokkaido starts to get cold, so I was prepared, wearing a down jacket, a Heattech shirt, Heattech tights, and windproof pants. During the walk, I was warm enough to even break a sweat. The autumn leaves were still plentiful, allowing us to feel both the autumn and the beginning of winter. The guide also informed us about how bears behave during this time, which made us feel safe while exploring. I would love to visit Shiretoko Goko again in a different season to see the rich nature throughout the year. Next time I come, I would like to request a star tour. Thank you very much for your help. At the end of October, I participated with my mother in her 60s.
In the morning at Shiretoko Five Lakes, we were able to see a lot of autumn leaves and wild birds. On the way, we also spotted bears searching for salmon and foxes from the car.
Our guide was very experienced and shared a wide range of information about bear ecology, wild birds, and the current state of Shiretoko Five Lakes.
For lunch, we ate at a restaurant recommended by our guide. The set meal was delicious! I also learned about various seasonal foods from Hokkaido, which was very informative.
In the afternoon at the primeval forest, we were able to see a herd of female deer and Ezo squirrels up close. There were explanations about mushrooms and trees, which were easy to understand and interesting. The view of the sea from the cliff was beautiful. Lastly, we stopped at a spot where we could see the sunset.
The guide mentioned that mid-February is the best time to see drifting ice, and I would like to see it next time.

2月中旬は流氷が見頃と教えくださり、今度は流氷も見てみたいです。

At Shiretoko Five Lakes, birdwatching was also a delightful experience. We were blessed with clear weather, and the views of Rausu-dake, Iouzan, and the surrounding scenery were magnificent. During the afternoon nature exploration, we missed seeing a chipmunk, but we did encounter a male and female deer chasing each other, as well as a red fox and an Ezo squirrel. Although we could only see the silhouette, we were also able to spot a black woodpecker.
Additionally, we were flexibly arranged for activities not included in the tour, such as observing the salmon catch and learning about salmon upstream migration.
This wonderful experience was made possible by our guide. They had extensive knowledge and eagerly answered our questions. Exploring with the guide was much more enjoyable than venturing out on our own. I feel it was a highly cost-effective investment. If you visit Shiretoko, I highly recommend utilizing the guide's services. October is considered the off-peak season, so it's also recommended for those who want to take their time sightseeing.

We participated as a couple. The guide was very nice and taught us various things, making the tour enjoyable! We learned about the nature and history of Shiretoko. I think there were things I wouldn't have understood while exploring the Shiretoko Five Lakes alone, so it was definitely the right choice to rely on the guide!
The primeval forest tour was also a lot of fun! We were able to see the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula, and the scenery was amazing. During the tour, we learned a lot about the Shiretoko forest and the wild birds, which was very enjoyable! This time it was autumn, but I would like to know about Shiretoko in different seasons as well. If I have the opportunity, I would like to request the same guide again. I highly recommend the full-day tour!

I had planned a walking tour of the Shiretoko Five Lakes, but we couldn't go on the scheduled tour because a bear was spotted on the course. However, the guide suggested an alternative location for sightseeing, and thanks to their guidance through the nature of Shiretoko, I had a wonderful experience. It was certainly very fulfilling, and if I hadn't requested the tour, I would have had to give up on seeing Shiretoko altogether, so I'm really glad I made the request. I signed up for the "Shiretoko Five Lakes Walking Tour - Full Lake Loop" for the first afternoon slot, but unfortunately, due to a bear sighting during the morning tour, all tours for that day were canceled. It's disappointing, but it's nature, so there's nothing we can do about it. In the meantime, while walking back and forth on the elevated wooden path, the guide's explanations were very interesting. Just when I thought we were done, we were informed that we would be exploring a different area, so I decided to join that.
As a result, it turned out to be quite enjoyable. The guide's explanations were clear and I really appreciated them. We got to see a waterfall and encountered wild deer, making for a unique experience that I wouldn't normally have. I definitely recommend participating in the tour at least once to enjoy the walk while listening to the guide's stories.
「知床五湖ウォーキングツアー 五湖一周」を午後一番の申し込みをしましたが、当日午後、ガイドさんの丁寧な説明があり朝のツアーから熊が出てしまいこの日はすべてのツアー自体が残念ながら中止となってしましました。こればかりは自然相手ですから残念ですがしょうがないですね。取り合えず高架木道を往復歩いている間もガイドさんの説明は非常に興味深いもがありました、これで解散かと思ったら少し場所は違いますがそちらを散策すると言う事なのでそれに参加致しました。
結果、それはそれでなかなか楽しかったです。なんと言ってもガイドさんの説明が分かりやすく非常に堪能させてもらいました。途中で滝？を見たり野生の鹿に遭遇したりと普段は経験できない散策で良かったですよ。
やはり一度はツアー参加でガイドさんの話を聞きながら散策するのも楽しいのでおすすめ致します。

My long-awaited trip to Shiretoko began with a ferry ride to Shiretoko Cape on the first day. The weather was great, the waves were calm, and I was thrilled to see brown bears, Ezo deer, and even Kunashir Island clearly. The next day, I booked a trekking tour of the Shiretoko Five Lakes and the primeval forest, and it was fascinating to see the scenery from the cliffs after having seen it from the boat the day before.
On the morning of the tour, I was picked up at my hotel and we first visited the Utoro fishing port to observe the salmon being unloaded. I was really happy because I thought I wouldn’t have the chance to see this. It was truly impressive. I savored the salmon rice bowl for lunch with great appreciation.
During the trekking at Shiretoko Five Lakes and the primeval forest, I not only enjoyed the majestic Shiretoko mountain range and the tranquility of the lakes and forests, but I also learned a wealth of knowledge about flora, fauna, climate, and not just Shiretoko but also Hokkaido from our guide, Umebayashi. I had thought we would be walking while ringing bells, but instead, we enjoyed quiet conversations in a small group while feeling the breath of animals and the sounds of the wind and waves, making it a truly wonderful experience.
There were traces everywhere indicating that brown bears live right here, but fortunately, we didn’t encounter any and were able to complete the tour safely. I would love to come back in a different season. It was a guide tour filled with love for Hokkaido, not just Shiretoko. Thank you very much.
念願だった知床への旅、1日目は知床岬までのフェリー、天気も良くて波も穏やか、ヒグマやエゾジカ、国後島までしっかり見えて最高でした。翌日に知床五湖&原生林トレッキングツアーをお願いしましたが、前日に船上から見た景色を今度は断崖絶壁の上から見ることができて興味深かったです。
当日の朝はホテルまで迎えに来て頂き、まずはウトロ漁港での鮭の水揚げ見学へ。機会がないと思ってたので嬉しかったです。とにかく迫力満点でした。昼食の鮭親子丼は心して味わいながら食べました。
知床五湖、原生林トレッキングでは雄大な知床連山、湖や森の静寂を楽しめただけではなく、ガイドの梅林さんから、ただ自分で歩きまわっても到底得られないような動植物や植生、気候、知床だけではなく北海道についてのたくさんの知識を教えていただきました。鈴を鳴らしながら歩くと思っていたので少人数で静かな会話を楽しみつつ、動物の息遣いや風や波の音を感じながらのトレッキングは本当に素敵な体験でした。
ヒグマがまさにここで生きているという痕跡はそこかしこにあれど、幸い遭遇することはなく無事にツアーを終えることができました。また違う季節にも来たいです。知床だけでなく、北海道愛に満ち溢れたガイドツアーでした、ありがとうございました。

However, I received a message from our guide, Ayano, via VELTRA about the rental of rubber boots, which made me feel relieved to participate. It seems that during the morning course, there was a bear sighting right after the start, so they couldn't go on the walk. In the afternoon, we were on a course that lasted just under three hours, and when we reached the area near Lake 4 (about an hour in), we received a report of a bear sighting and had to turn back. We were able to stroll along the deck walkway and see Lake 1, but I really wanted to complete all five lakes. Despite it being September, there have been bear sightings almost every day, and it seems there are too many this year. Weather and bear sightings are a matter of luck, so I would like to challenge this again someday. Our veteran guide, Ayano, was very friendly and made it a fun experience.

午前中コースではスタート直後にクマ出没で散策できなかったようで、午後は3時間弱のコースで5湖4湖まできたところ（1時間ほどのところ）でクマ出没の連絡が入り引き返すことになりました。デッキの遊歩道を散策し1湖を見ることができましたが、5湖全部コンプリートしたかったです。9月にも関わらず、クマ出没がほぼ毎日で今年は多すぎるとのこと。
天気と熊の出没は運なので、またいつかチャレンジしたいです。

Among the many tours that cover all five lakes of Shiretoko, I found and participated in a compact tour that visits two lakes. On the day of the tour, there were two groups with four participants. We were taught how to use binoculars and listened to a lecture at the field house before setting off. The pace of the tour was slow, and we occasionally stopped to learn about bear claw marks on trees, footprints, and droppings. These are things you would likely miss without the guide's explanations. Additionally, it's reassuring to have a guide when it comes to dealing with bear encounters. Fortunately, we did not encounter any bears, but we were able to see deer from the elevated walking path.

In the morning, we explored the Shiretoko Five Lakes. I was nervous since a brown bear had been spotted the day before, but I was able to complete the tour safely. The Five Lakes with Rausu-Dake in the background were beautiful.
For lunch, we drove to a nearby shop at a roadside station and had some free time to eat.
In the afternoon, we walked through the primeval forest. We were able to enter areas that can only be accessed through the guided tour, where we observed Shiretoko's unique vegetation and wildlife.

My first trip to Shiretoko! I joined the tour filled with anticipation of encountering nature and wildlife. On the day of the tour, it was rainy, but our guide, Ayano, was fantastic. I went at the end of August. Just as we were about to depart, we were informed that a bear had been spotted a few minutes earlier, so we couldn't go to the Five Lakes. The tour guide suggested either an alternative course, waiting until the bear left, or canceling. Since we had to return to Tokyo from Memanbetsu Airport that day, we chose the alternative course. Although we couldn't see the lakes, we explored the forest, saw trees scratched by bears, and reached the cliffs of the Okhotsk Sea, which was quite impressive. I recommend it if you're not fixated on seeing the lakes!
8月の終わりに行きました。さて出発というときに数十分前に熊が出没したとのことで5湖に行けなくなりました。そこでツアーガイドさんは代替コースか、熊がいなくなるまで待機するかキャンセルも有りと提案。我々は当日女満別空港から帰京しなければならなかったので代替コースを選択。5湖は見れなかったものの森を探検、熊の引っ掻いた木とか、オホーツク海の岸壁に出るなど、見応えがありました。湖にこだわらなければおすすめします!

At the end of August, it was a time when we could explore without a guide, but I signed up for a small loop course because I wanted to hear various explanations. Our guide, Ayano, was very experienced and provided explanations in a calm tone. I learned a lot about animal tracks and rare plants that I wouldn't have noticed just by walking on my own. It was reassuring when we spotted a brown bear, and I felt that participating in the guided tour was definitely worth it.
There were a total of 8 people in 3 groups, and the content was enjoyable for everyone from elementary school students to adults. Since we walked through the forest, comfortable shoes and suitable trekking clothing are essential. Binoculars were provided for free, so it was fine not to bring my own.
8月末なのでガイドさんなしでも散策可能な時期でしたが、いろいろと説明を聞きたく小ループコースを申し込みました。
ガイドの綾野さんは大ベテラン、落ち着いた口調でさまざまな説明をしてくださいます。自分で歩いているだけでは気づかない動物の痕跡や珍しい植物などがよく分かりました。ヒグマを見かけた時にも安心ですし、ガイドツアーに参加する価値は大いにあると感じました。
3グループ総勢8人のツアーでしたが、小学生から大人もまで楽しめる内容でした。森の中を歩くので、歩きやすい靴とトレッキングに適した服装は必須です。双眼鏡は無償で貸していただけたので、持っていかなくても大丈夫でした。

There was a sighting of a brown bear, and the walking trail was closed. The Shiretoko Five Lakes walking tour was canceled. We received a notification the night before and were able to participate in an alternative plan for a primeval forest trekking tour.
We walked through the primeval forest, which we wouldn't have had the courage to enter on our own, with a guide. We saw claw marks from the brown bear, deer, woodpecker holes, and some rare mushrooms, which was a lot of fun. The guide's voice was very calm and easy to listen to. However, the way he spoke was amusing, and I couldn't help but chuckle at some of his stories, which made it very enjoyable.
While I felt a mix of relief and disappointment at not seeing a brown bear, I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the nature of Shiretoko. Since this is feedback on the alternative tour, I hesitated to write it here, but I wanted to express my gratitude, so I decided to share it. Thank you very much.

自分たちでは入る勇気がでない原生林をガイドさんと一緒に歩きヒグマの爪痕をみたり、鹿を見たり、キツツキの穴の跡、珍しいきのこを見たりとても楽しめました。ガイドさんの声がとても落ち着いていて聞きやすいです。でも話す単語がおもしろくておもわずくすっとわらってしまう様なお話の仕方でとっても楽しめました。ヒグマを見ることはできず、ほっとした様な残念な様な気持ちですが、知床の自然を存分に味わえてとっても楽しかったです。
代替案のツアーの感想なので、こちらに記載して良いのか迷いましたが、感謝の気持ちをお伝えしたく記載させていただきます。ありがとうございました。

I went on a tour of the Shiretoko Five Lakes, but due to bear sightings, we switched to a primeval forest tour. This turned out to be the best experience! We pushed through grass that was up to our waists and entered the forest, and when we emerged into a wide-open field, the view was breathtaking! Cliffs, the sea, and blue skies with clouds. We visited three different cliffs.
Even the plants and landscapes that you usually pass by became really interesting after hearing detailed explanations from the professional guide. We encountered various animals, including foxes, deer, and even bears. There happened to be a bear nearby eating, which is usually scary, but with the professional guide there, I felt safe observing it.
The next day, I took a sightseeing boat, but since it was the same scenery I had seen up close, I honestly found it a bit lacking. If you go to Shiretoko, I highly recommend going on a tour with a professional guide.
知床五湖のツアーだったんですが、熊出没で原生林ツアーに変更へ。これが最高の体験でした！
腰まである草をかき分け森へ入り、景色が開けた野原に出たら、もうそこは絶景！絶壁と海と青空に雲。そんな絶壁を3箇所も回りました。
普段は通り過ぎてしまう植物や風景も、プロの詳しい説明をきいたら本当に面白い。いろんな動物にも出会えます。キツネ、鹿、そして熊にも。たまたま餌を食べている熊が近くにいて、普通は怖いですが、プロのガイドさんがいてくれたので安心して観察することができました。
次の日遊覧船に乗ったんですが、近くで見ていた景色だったので、正直物足りなかったくらい。
知床にいったら、プロのガイドさんとツアーが1番のおすすめです。

Thank you for arranging the trekking despite the challenging conditions, including the temporary closure of the Shiretoko Five Lakes due to bear encounters. Even in the heat, the shade of the trees was cool, and the walking path was easy to navigate, making the three hours fly by. I had mixed feelings about wanting to see a grizzly bear or not, but thanks to Ayano, it was a safe and enjoyable tour. I was able to hear various stories not only about animals but also about plants, insects, and mushrooms, and I think I would have missed out on a lot if I hadn't participated. Thank you very much!
暑い中でも木陰は涼しく、遊歩道で歩きやすく、あっという間の３時間弱でした。
ヒグマには会いたいような、会いたくないような、という気持ちでしたが、綾野さんのおかげで安全に楽しいツアーでした。
動物のことだけでなく、植物、虫、キノコなど色んなお話しを聞くことができ、参加しなければ多くのことを見逃していたと思います。
