In the morning, we visited the salmon run and Lake Shiretoko One and Two, as part of the walking path was under construction. We watched the sorting of salmon caught in the fixed nets at the fishing port and saw the salmon targeted by anglers in the sea just before they swim upstream (they weren't caught, though). I observed the salmon struggling to give their all in the river to leave behind their offspring.

I felt sympathy for the harsh fate of the salmon, but I also respected their determination to fight until the end. Lake Shiretoko Five was incredibly beautiful. It was a time when birds weren't chirping much, and with fewer people around due to weekdays and the pandemic, it was surprisingly quiet, which was very soothing.

In the afternoon, we explored the primeval forest. The pleasant scents of the Abies sachalinensis and Magnolia were calming, and as we walked along the soft, leaf-littered paths of the quiet forest, we occasionally sensed the presence of wildlife and were able to see black woodpeckers, chipmunks, and Ezo deer. I was moved to be able to see the expressions of distant animals through the binoculars that were lent to us.

Not only did we enjoy the forest, but we also saw waterfalls and breathtaking views from cliffs along the way, allowing us to take many great photos. Especially in the afternoon, we visited places we wouldn't have gone to on our own, and the detailed explanations provided made it clear that there was so much more to learn than just walking. As a novice, I might not have even noticed the signs of wildlife and would have thought, "There’s nothing in this forest..."

I felt like I had seen most of Hokkaido's animals at Maruyama Zoo before, but I truly realized how wonderful wildlife is. We even spotted a mother brown bear and her cubs, as well as a white-tailed eagle in the distance, making it a fulfilling day. The path was relatively flat, so it didn't require much physical strength, and it was a bonus that there were only a few of us. I would love to walk the same path in a different season.

遊歩道が一部工事中だったので、午前中は鮭の遡上と知床一湖・二湖でした。漁港の鮭テラスで定置網に引っかかった鮭の仕分けを見て、川を遡上する手前の海で釣り人達に狙われる鮭を見て(釣られてなかったけど)、川で最後の命を振り絞り子孫を残そうとする鮭さん達を見ました。
鮭の過酷な運命に同情してしまいましたが、最後まで戦う姿勢で生き抜く鮭は凄いなと尊敬してしまいました。
知床五湖は凄く綺麗でした。鳥があまり鳴かない時期だそうで人も平日とコロナ禍で少なく、驚く程に静かで凄くそれに癒されました。
午後は原生林でした。良い匂いのするトドマツやホオノキの匂いに癒されつつ静かな森のフカフカの腐葉土の道なき道を歩いていくと、時々生き物の気配がしてクマゲラやシマリス、エゾシカなど見ることが出来ました。双眼鏡を貸して頂いていたので、遠くの動物の表情まで見られて感動でした。
森だけでなく途中で滝を見たり崖からの絶景を見たりもして、良い写真がたくさん撮れました。
特に午後の方は自力ではまず行かない所で、詳しい解説があるからこそただ歩くだけでは全く分からないことが教えてもらえて良かったです。素人だとそもそも動物の気配に気付けず、この森何もいないな…と思って終わりそうです。
以前行った円山動物園で北海道の動物は大体見たような気でいましたが、やはり野生は良いなと実感しました。
途中遠目にヒグマの親子やオジロワシまで見られて盛り沢山の一日でした。
アップダウンがない道でそれほど体力も必要なかったですしたまたまですが少人数だったのも良かったです。
また違う季節にも同じ道を歩いてみたいと思いました。

I live in Hokkaido.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I started doing solo car camping within the region, and when I thought about exploring the Shiretoko Five Lakes, I was really worried about bear encounters, so I decided to join this tour.
My main purpose was to avoid bears, but the guide provided a lot of information that will be helpful for my future solo travels.

On the day of our reservation, it was reported that a brown bear appeared early in the course, and the tour ended in no time! Since we had some extra time, we were able to reschedule for the same tour the following morning.

The next day, in the refreshing morning right after the park opened, my friend, the guide, and I leisurely toured the five lakes. Our guide, Ayano, was very knowledgeable about animals, plants, flowers, and even the history of the five lakes tourism, making the explanations enjoyable and extremely interesting. We also looked at distant herons and deer through binoculars that were lent to us for free. I was particularly happy when I spotted a hazel grouse by sound and was praised for finding such a rare sight.

We were blessed with good weather, and the fun time flew by. I hope to have the opportunity to join the star tour, which I heard Ayano is particularly skilled at, next time.

予約した当日は、開始早々にコ－ス内にヒグマが現れたとのことで、あっという間に終了！時間に余裕のあった私達は、翌朝の同ツア－に振替えとなりました。
翌日は開園早々の清々しい午前中、友人と私そしてガイドさんの三人でゆっくり五湖を巡ることになりました。ガイドの綾野さんは動物、草木や花、はたまた五湖観光の歴史等知識が豊富で、説明が楽しく、非常に興味深かったです。また無料で貸していただいた双眼鏡から遠くのサギやシカを眺めました。とりわけ私が音で気が付き、何かを尋ねたエゾライチョウを見つけた時は貴重だとほめてもらい、嬉しかったです。
天候にも恵まれ、楽しい時間はあっという間に終わりました。次回は綾野さんが最も得意とお聞きした星のツア－に参加する機会があればと思います。

I participated in mid-September, and the views from the five lakes were breathtaking, overlooking Shiretoko Peninsula. I was able to encounter various plants and animals, and I was extremely satisfied! It became the best memory. The guide's explanations about the flora and fauna were easy to understand. Before joining the tour, I had zero knowledge about Shiretoko, but I feel that my understanding deepened throughout the day. It was my first time using binoculars, and the thorough briefing beforehand was very helpful. When I finally saw the wildlife, I was moved by their power! The photos taken by the guide were all beautiful, and I think it's because they know Shiretoko so well. When I visit Shiretoko again, I definitely want to join the same tour!

The weather was nice, and the views were always stunning. I was captivated by Rausu-dake, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sakhalin fir, feeling like I wanted to gaze at them forever, as if time wasn't enough. I didn't encounter many animals, but at the very end of the tour, I got to see the natural monument, the Black Woodpecker! Since we walked on paths without trails, I think it's important to wear clothing that covers your skin, as mentioned in the precautions. It became a wonderful memory.

天気が良かったこともあり、常に最高の景色でした。
羅臼岳やオホーツク海、トドマツに目を奪われて、時間が足りないくらいずーっと眺めていたいと感じました。
動物にはあまり会えなかったですが、ツアーの最後の最後に天然記念物のクマゲラに会えました！！
道なき道を歩いたりもするので、注意事項に書いてあった通り肌を出さない服装をしてくることが重要だと思います。
素敵な思い出になりました。

I participated in mid-August. The weather was cloudy with occasional rain, and there were some light showers. The temperature was around 16°C, which felt a bit chilly, but it was comfortable for me coming from Tokyo.

In the morning, I joined a group of nearly 10 people and we walked around the five lakes (participants who only joined for the morning disbanded here). In the afternoon, we went trekking in the primeval forest. There were no walking paths in the forest, and it was challenging to navigate the animal trails, but it was fun. I encountered wild Ezo deer several times. The leaves were starting to change color, and I thought it would be nice to visit again in a different season.

天気は曇り時々雨、たまに小雨の日でした。気温は16℃と少し肌寒さを感じる位でしたが、東京から来ていた自分にとっては快適でした。
午前中は10名弱のグループで五湖をぐるっと周り(午前中のみの参加者はここで解散)、午後は原生林をトレッキングしました。原生林は遊歩道はなく、獣道を進んでいくのが大変だけど楽しかった。野生のエゾシカに何度か遭遇しました。葉が色づき始めていて、また違う季節にも訪れてみたいなと思いました。

I think the quality of this type of tour really depends on the guide, and I believe that Miura, who attended us this time, is one of the best guides.

In the evening, we went to a restaurant bar called Piccadilly in Utoro, and that was also fantastic!

I will definitely visit again the next time I come to Utoro.

In the morning, we spent three hours at Shiretoko Five Lakes. Although it was a time when we could enter without a guide, having one made the experience enjoyable with explanations about the flora and fauna, as well as quizzes. For lunch, we chose a restaurant from the recommended places around the Utoro roadside station. In the afternoon, we went on a three-hour trekking adventure on a wild animal path. The guide stopped every few minutes to provide explanations, so we were able to walk comfortably without getting out of breath. Although it was a six-hour trek in total, including the time for explanations, I think it's a tour that anyone can enjoy, even if they're not very confident in their physical fitness. We also searched for mushrooms and took photos of deer and squirrels along the way, making it a fulfilling tour. It may be common knowledge, but I think it's a good idea to bring a portable toilet. Since it was early September, it wasn't cold, but I recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants because of the grass. I included photos that don't spoil the experience.

朝は3時間の知床五湖。ガイドさん不要でも入れる時期でしたが、ガイドさんがいることで動植物の説明やクイズなどがあり楽しく歩くことができました。昼食はウトロの道の駅周辺のおすすめ店から1店を選び各自食事。昼からは3時間の獣道トレッキングでした。数分間に1回ガイドさんが立ち止まり説明をしてくれるので、1回も息があがらず快適に歩けました。朝昼6時間トレッキングですが、説明の時間もあるので、体力に自信がなくても大丈夫なツアーだと思います。途中でキノコを探したり、鹿やリスなどの写真を撮ったり、充実のツアーでした。常識かもわかりませんが、携帯用トイレは持って行くべきだと思いました。9月初旬だったので寒くはなかったのですが、草が生えているので長袖長ズボンが良いと思います。写真はネタバレしないものを載せました。

Although some areas were difficult to walk due to being unmaintained, I felt a closer connection to the forest and encountered beautiful views and many sights. Along the way, the guide shared various information about the creatures, plants, forest, and history of Shiretoko in a detailed manner, allowing me to learn many things I wouldn't have noticed if I had just wandered alone. I had a very enjoyable and fulfilling time. If I had more time, I would have loved to visit again. I plan to come back to Shiretoko.

午後は原生林トレッキングとして、遊歩道とは異なる獣道を散策、整備されていない分歩きにくいところもありますが、より森らしさを近く感じられ、素敵な景色とたくさん出会えました。
道中はガイドの方が知床の生き物、植物、森、歴史などのさまざまなことを丁寧に話してくださり、自分1人で散策するだけでは気づけないことをたくさん知ることができ、とても楽しく充実した時間を過ごせました。
時間に余裕があればもう一度訪れたかったくらいです。
また知床に来ようと思います。

We quickly turned back to the entrance and changed our plans to go trekking in the afternoon, visiting Shiretoko Five Lakes then. The guide provided the necessary explanations, but to be honest, I wished there had been more detailed information that someone knowledgeable could have shared without me having to ask questions. The trekking course included places that are hard to access on your own, which was very nice. If I participate again, since this is not a cheap tour, I would want to choose a guide with higher reviews.

午前中、知床五湖を訪れようとレクチャー後に入り口を入りましたが100メートルほどでガイドさんの無線機に熊が五湖で出たと言う情報が入りました。すぐに入り口に引き返し午後予定されていたトレッキングに急遽変更となり、午後知床5湖を訪れました。ガイドさんの説明は必要な分はありましたが欲を言うと、こちらから質問しなくても、もう少し詳しく勉強している方だからこそ知っている情報をもっといろいろ知りたかったです。トレッキングのコースは自分ではなかなか行けない場所もありとてもよかったです。次回参加するとすれば、安いツアーではないので口コミ評価のもっと高いガイドさんを選びたいと思ってしまいます。

The guide, Ayano, was indeed a veteran as mentioned in the reviews, and we had a fun time exploring. She taught us various things, including information about bears and deer, how to determine the age of plants, and that in case of getting lost, it's good to eat the leaves and fruits of thorny plants. The binoculars were fantastic; they were ready to use without needing to adjust the focus, and I was thrilled to see faraway sights clearly.

It seems that during the hot summer, bears tend to wander near the roads around Shiretoko Goko in the evening, so I thought I would drive there during that time on my next visit. On the way back, I was quite happy to see a mother bear and her cubs at the Iwaubetsu River, although unfortunately, they didn't catch any salmon. Thank you for pointing out the viewing spots from the top of the cliff.

熊や鹿の情報情報はもちろん、植物の年齢の見方や、遭難した時はトゲのある植物の葉っぱや実を食べると良いこと等様々なことを教えていただきました。

I was really looking forward to the Shiretoko Five Lakes tour, and it exceeded my expectations in terms of enjoyment. I wanted to enjoy the nature of Shiretoko, but I was scared of the brown bears, so I signed up for a walking tour. This was a great decision. Our guide, Mr. Umebayashi, is a veteran with 17 years of experience on this trail. He taught us about the signs of brown bears feeding, the traces of their hibernation nests, and various information about the animals and plants of Shiretoko that you would never notice just by walking normally. It was very refreshing and interesting to see how the scenery changes when you gain knowledge.

I saw Ezo deer up close twice, as well as a peregrine falcon and a white-tailed eagle. The day flew by in no time.

It was my first time in Shiretoko, and I really liked it. I want to visit again in a different season. It seems like it would be fun to see the scenery during the drift ice season.

普通に歩くだけじゃ絶対に分からないヒグマが餌を食べた跡、冬眠の巣の跡、知床の動物や植物の事、色々教えてもらいました。
知識を得ると歩いたときの見える景色が変わるのがとても新鮮で面白かったです。
動物は、間近でエゾシカを2回見たのを始め、ハヤブサ、ホオジロワシも生で見えました。
ほんとあっという間に1日が終わりました。

There were no other participants on the tour, so I had the Shiretoko Five Lakes exploration all to myself. This meant there was no crowding, and I was able to take my time with photography and leisurely explore the five lakes. Not only did we walk around the lakes, but I also learned about the importance of fallen trees and moss in nurturing Shiretoko's nature, as well as information about insects and plants, and the bears that eat them. I felt that everything in Shiretoko's nature is interconnected.

Before heading out on the tour, we received a lecture on how to deal with bears. Without this knowledge, you cannot participate in the tour. I learned that it is more important to know how to avoid encounters with bears than to know what to do if you see one. If we encounter a bear or are near one, we will follow the guide's instructions. Our guide was a knowledgeable veteran who communicated with the headquarters via radio, which was reassuring. The phrase "Leave everything to me" made me feel at ease.

However, we must remember that we are entering the bears' home in the great outdoors, so our belongings and preparations are crucial. As mentioned in the tour briefing, we should not bring any food to avoid attracting bears. Even sucking on candy is prohibited. Drinks should be tea or water, and sweet sports drinks are strictly forbidden due to bears' excellent sense of smell for food.

If you do bring a drink, it's recommended to use a thermos instead of a plastic bottle to avoid littering. (You can fill it with ice from the hotel’s ice machine to enjoy cold water.) Because we are in the great outdoors, there are no restrooms along the course. You won't be able to use the restroom for three hours, so make sure to go beforehand. It's also important to stay on the designated paths. The ground in Shiretoko is made of volcanic rocks, so there are rugged paths with rocky terrain and roots, so wear comfortable athletic shoes, sneakers, or trekking shoes. (I wore sneakers and had no issues.)

During the summer, there are many flies, and to avoid tick bites, I recommend wearing lightweight long sleeves and using insect repellent.

This experience not only allowed me to enjoy the scenery but also prompted me to think about how to protect Shiretoko's great nature. If you approach it with the mindset of learning rather than just sightseeing, I believe you will have a great time. It was a very meaningful, enjoyable, and beautiful tour.

ツアーに出かける前に、レクチャー室で熊への対処法を教えていただきました。この熊への対処法を教わらないと、ツアーに行くことが出来ません。
熊に会ったらどうするかより、熊に合わないためにどうするかが大切だということを学びました。
熊に出会ったり近くにいる場合は、ガイドさんの指示に従います。知識を持ったベテランのガイドさんで、本部と無線で連絡を取りながら回りますので、心強いです「全て私に任せて下さい。」という言葉に安心しました。

しかし、相手は大自然。熊たちが住むお家にお邪魔する気持ちが大切で、持ち物や準備が重要です。
ツアー説明にもあるように、熊が寄ってこないように食べ物は一切持たないこと。飴をなめながらも厳禁です。飲み物はお茶か水。甘いスポーツドリンクは厳禁です。熊は食べ物に対する嗅覚が優れているためです。
持っていくならキャップを落としたりして自然を汚さないよう、ペットボトルではなく、水筒がお勧めです。（ホテルの製氷機の氷を入れて行くことで、冷たい水を飲むことも出来ますよ。）大自然故に、コースにトイレは一切ありません。3時間はトイレに行けませんので、事前に済ませましょう。遊歩道から外れないで歩くことも大切ですが、知床の大地は、火山から噴火した噴石で地面が出来ていて、ゴツゴツした岩の道、木の根っこで凸凹した道もあるため、歩きやすい運動靴やスニーカー、トレッキングシューズで行きましょう。（私はスニーカーで行きましたが問題なかったです。）
夏の時期はアブも沢山発生しますし、マダニに噛まれないようにするため、夏用の薄手の長袖、虫除けスプレーをしていったほうが良いと思います。

景色だけでなく、知床の大自然やこの大自然を守っていくためにどうしたらよいか考えるきっかけにもなりました。単なる観光ではなく、勉強しに行く気持ちで行くと、楽しめると思います。とても有意義な楽しく美しいツアーでした。

It was my first time in Eastern Hokkaido and my first time in Shiretoko. Since it was the season when brown bears appear, we couldn't walk the ground trails without a guided tour. Walking with a knowledgeable guide who explained the trees, flowers, birds, insects, and surrounding mountains allowed me to learn many things I didn't know and notice things I hadn't before. Although I didn't encounter any brown bears during the hike, I had the surprising experience of coming across a mother and cub on the way to the five lakes from our accommodation.

I think I would have just passed by without noticing the types of trees, reasons for the scars, and the terrain without the guide. The guide was particularly excited about a rare large ant nest, which was amusing! It was a lot of fun hiking because I was able to notice details that I definitely wouldn't have on my own.

The day before, they kindly contacted us by phone regarding the meeting place and attire. The tour itself was quite enjoyable. However, perhaps because we were with the full-day tour participants, we (the half-day tour group) had no transportation provided, and we struggled to find the meeting point. Despite being told to gather 10 minutes early, we ended up arriving late (with no apology), and on the way back, the guidance for the full-day tour participants took priority, leaving us in a bit of a neglected state... so the experience surrounding the tour was not very pleasant. I think it's a good idea to confirm whether you'll be with the full-day tour participants when making a reservation. Alternatively, if you go in with the mindset that this is how it is, you might not feel the same way. That said, the tour itself was wonderful, and I was satisfied.

ツアーそのものは、十分楽しめました。しかし、一日コースの人達と一緒だったせいかもしれませんが、私たち（半日コース）だけ送迎なし、待ち合わせ場所がわからず、自分たちで探し回った、早く着くので、10分前までに集合してほしいとの依頼連絡があったにも関わらず、若干遅刻（お詫びなし）、帰りは、一日ツアーの人達への案内が優先で、私たちは放置状態・・・などとツアーの前後は、あまり気分のいいものではありませんでした。予約される際は、一日コースの人達と一緒かどうかを、確認されたほうがいいかと思います。または、そんなものだと考えて参加されると、同じような思いはしないと思いました。繰り返しですが、ツアーそのものは、素晴らしく、満足できました。

I thought there would be fewer attractions since it was the off-season, but the guide was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot, making it more enjoyable than I expected. Next time, I want to visit Shiretoko in the summer and take more time to explore!

The weather wasn't very good, but I had a great time exploring while listening to various stories. The scenery was wonderful, and I was very satisfied to encounter wildlife, animal tracks, and plants that I wouldn't have found on my own. I would like to request a guide again when I visit Shiretoko next time.

お天気はあまり良くなかったですが、色々お話を聞きながら散策できて楽しかったです。
景色は然ることながら自分では見つけられなかったであろう野生動物たち、動物の痕跡や植物に触れられて大満足でした。
