Lake Shinotsu Smelt Ice Fishing and Hot Spring Tour from Sapporo

Enjoy the winter experience in Hokkaido of smelt fishing. After learning how to catch your fish, warm up and soak your cares away in the waters of a relaxing hot spring.

As the cold and snowy winter descends upon Hokkaido, experience the fun and excitement of ice fishing. Lake Shinotsu offers some of the finest ice fishing in all of Japan. You will be nice and cozy inside a wooden shack kept perfectly warm with a piping hot stove. Reel in fish after fish and a chef on site will cook them up for you.

If you are in need of a break from fishing, just a quick minute walk away is the Shinshinotsu Hot Spring.The combination of the hot mineral waters and cool winter breezes is an experience not to be missed!

  • Lunch and Bathing at Shinshinokotsu Hot Springs (Lunch: 12:15-13:00)
    stsg_wnt_q_4 Chilly? Sink into the steaming hot springs to warm up. The contrast between the hot water and snowy scenery is delightful.

    Lunch is from 12:15 to 13:15.

    Then enjoy a yummy set lunch. The chef can even fry up the fish you caught as a special treat!

    The oldest building in Sapporo, it was built in 1878 and is one of the last surviving Western-style structures from the Meiji era.

    • Please arrive at the check in counter with your printed voucher at least 15 minutes before the tour departure time.
    • For children under the age of 6 who require a seat, please book as 'Child 6-11'.
Requirement(s) - Others
    • While the tents are heated and there will be board to protect your feet from the ice, please do wear warm clothing.
Additional Note(s)
    • You will be provided with a tent and the fishing hole will be opened prior to your arrival.
    • After fishing, you can have your fish cooked at Shinsinotsu Hot Spring for lunch.
    • Show your caught fish to a staff member to receive a memo to assure the number of fish you caught. Your fish will be deep fried and served at lunch.
    • You may catch other types of fish besides smelt, i.e. carp, but they may not be eaten.
    • Red worms will be used as bait and you will need to bait your own hooks.
    • Each tent accomodates between three (3) to six (6) guests. You may share the tent with others.
    • If you would like to take your caught fish home with you, you will need to provide a container.
    • The starting date for this tour will be postponed if the weather is not cold enough and the lake does not freeze sufficiently.
    • The time spent at each stop may be altered due to traffic or the size of the group.
    • Due to holidays or other closures the tour may be cut short.
    • Depending on traffic or bad weather, the return bus to Sapporo Station may be delayed. Please allow enough time to make connecting transfers.
    • Tours may be cancelled due to bad weather or road closures. Please contact the tour operator to reconfirm the operation in the event of inclement weather.
    • Please note that catching fish is NOT guaranteed.
    • At the Shinshinotsu Hot Springs there will be bathrooms and rooms for you to rest in. Towels will not be provided, so please bring your own. Small towels are for sale for 200 JPY.
    • In case of heavy snow, snow conditions at the location of the activity, or in case the bus cannot reach the destination due to road conditions, the tour may be cancelled. There is a chance that the tour may have to turn back after departure, for your own safety.
    • This tour will be held only in Japanese.

  • Any cancellations made between the booking confirmation date to 2 hours prior to the activity start time will be subject to a charge of JPY 100 per participant.
  • Any cancellations made after 2 hours prior to the activity start time will be subject to a charge of 100% of the total amount.
