You walk on snowy paths wearing snowshoes. There are gentle ups and downs as you cross a small hill and enter the flatlands, but the pace is adjusted to match everyone's fitness levels. However, my 6-year-old child found it difficult to walk in the snowshoes and couldn't continue about 1 km from the return point, so I had to carry them. Unfortunately, we were left behind because there was another tour scheduled. Although there were other tourists, which helped us find our way back, I felt a bit anxious.

Walking on flat paths feels different in terms of fatigue, so if you're participating with small children, be prepared to carry them back to enjoy the experience. However, since you can find your way even without joining the tour, it might be a good idea to rent snowshoes at the Shiretoko Nature Center and enjoy a leisurely trek on your own.

小高い丘を越えて平地にはいるため緩やかな高低がありますが、みなさんの
体力に合わせて進んでくれます。
しかし、子供が６歳でスノーシューが歩きにくく帰りの工程では残り１ｋｍくらいの所で子供が歩けなくなり抱っこして歩くも、次のツアーがあるからと置き去りにされてしまいました。
他の観光客がいたので帰り道はわかりましたが、少し不安が残りました。
平坦な道を歩くのとは多少疲労感が異なるため、小さい子供と一緒の方は抱っこして帰るくらいの覚悟で参加すればそれなりに楽しめます。
ただ、ツアーに参加しなくても行先はわかるので、知床自然センターでスノーシュー等を借りて個人でゆったりトレッキングを楽しむのも良いかもしれません。

I was guided by Ayano-san. Instead of a trekking course, we walked through a snowy animal path wearing snowshoes. I was able to hear many stories about the ecosystem that I wouldn't have learned by walking through the forest on my own. Since these are wild animals, there's no guarantee you'll see them, but during my visit, I was able to observe various animals such as Ezo deer, northern foxes, white-tailed eagles, and falcons.

In February, during the peak of winter, we happened to be there just as the drift ice was returning to the shore with the north wind, and we were able to enjoy the view of the drift ice spreading across the sea. I was captivated by its grandeur and forgot the cold as I admired it.

If you want to know the land, walking with a guide is the best! I was also comforted by Ayano-san's wonderful personality.

Since the temperature is below freezing, your toes can get cold. I think it's a good idea for participants to keep their toes especially warm.

Yes, I will want to come back for this trip some day if I visit Shiretoko again. Mr Ayano the guide speaks English well and showed detail of the forest well. He knows good spot to take photos. I enjoy the snow shoeing very much also when there is a steep way that we have to slide down. It is very fun. I enjoy the peaceful forest with only the sound of wood pecker bird and the smell of fresh trees. The panorama is magnificent. And we had a perfect weather when I join this tour March 27, 2017. It had snowed quite a bit the day before, making it slightly more difficult to walk than usual, but thanks to the snowshoes, we were able to progress steadily through the fresh snow. It was great that the guide shared the names of rare plants, which we wouldn't have been able to identify on our own. When we got close to the waterfall, the guide pointed out, "There's a fox," and when we looked over, we saw a fox quietly watching us from behind a tree before it disappeared into the forest.

When we reached the turnaround point, we hadn't encountered any deer yet, and I jokingly said, "We can't go back without seeing a deer!" Suddenly, a group of five or six deer appeared right in front of us. It was so moving! The guide advised us to approach them gradually, without showing too much interest, and we were able to get quite close. We enjoyed watching the little deer that flew around us and took plenty of pictures.

On the way back, I wanted to see the sunset, and the guide hurriedly packed up the snowshoes. From a nearby cape, we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset! Since we were the only participants during the off-season and the weather was perfect, it turned out to be the best day ever!

前日に雪がけっこう降り、通常よりも若干歩きにくい日のようでしたが、スノーシューのおかげで新雪の中を、ずんずん進むことができました。
ガイドさんが珍しい植物の名前などを教えて下さるのが良かったです、素人には見つけられないので。
滝の近くまで行った時「キツネがいるよ」と教えて下さり、そちらを見ると、
キツネさんが、木の陰でじっとこちらを伺い、そして森の奥に消えていきました。
折り返し地点まで来て、シカにはまだ出会えていなかったので、「シカに会えないと帰れないわー」とか言っていたら、突然目の前にシカが５，６匹現れました。感動しました～（*^_^*）
「シカに関心がない風に、正面からではなく徐々に近づくように」と教えて下さり、かなりの近距離まで行くことができました。私たちの近くを飛び回る小ジカをじっくりと眺め、写真もいっぱい撮れました。
それから帰り道、私は夕陽が見たかったのですが、ガイドさんはスノーシューを急いで片づけて下さり、途中の岬から、とてもきれいな夕陽を眺めることができました！
シーズンオフで参加者が私たちだけだったのと、お天気にも恵まれ、最高の１日になりました！！
