In northwestern Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is known for its gassho-style houses, designed for large families. Surrounded by mountains, this village, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, features homes built to endure heavy snowfall, preserving a unique cultural heritage.
■Wada House: The largest gassho-style house in Ogimachi, a designated Important Cultural Property, with the first and second floors open to the public.
■Kanda House: Features a remarkable internal structure that took about 10 years to complete, including a gunpowder-making area.
■Nagase House: A five-story gassho-style house displaying a 500-year-old Buddhist altar and traditional tools.
■Myosenji Temple Folk Museum: A unique temple with a thatched roof on all main structures.
■Tajima House Sericulture Museum: The village's only museum focused on sericulture.
■Spring: The village comes alive with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, offering a picturesque landscape against the backdrop of traditional gassho-style houses.
■Summer: Lush greenery envelops the area, providing a vibrant contrast to the rustic architecture, and the fields are full of life.
■Autumn: Late October to early November brings beautiful autumn colors, with the first frost and snowfall appearing in November.
■Winter: Shirakawa-go, at the foot of Mount Hakusan, is blanketed in snow from December to February, creating a magical white landscape.
Lunch is not included, so please feel free to enjoy whatever you like on your own.
