Cacao beans are used to make chocolate and are grown in West Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and other regions with high temperatures and humidity. On Hahajima, a joint project with a company began about 10 years ago to cultivate cacao beans. While cacao cultivation in Japan was virtually nonexistent, the project overcame many hardships and finally reached the stage of commercialization in the past few years.
