  • 09:00 Depart by Train for Nanzenji Temple
    Costs you will incur on the day of the tour:

  • 09:30 Arrive Nanzenji Temple
    Enter through the grand Sanmon gate welcoming you to Nanzenji Temple. Stroll through the temple grounds before going on a 20-minute hike up the hill to a waterfall used for meditation for 700 yrs. You can even climb up into the gate that overlooks Kyoto. We will discuss Buddhism and history here.
  • 10:30 Depart Nanzenji Temple for Nijo Castle
  • 11:00 Arrive at Nijo Castle area
    Walk grounds, building and see how a Shogun ran a Castle. We will talk history here.
  • 11:45 Depart Nijo Castle for the famous Nishiki Market
  • 12:15 Arrive Nishiki Market area
    We will traverse this famous 250 yr-old market and try some local Kyoto Food Vendors. We will also try some yummy Sake here!
  • 12:45 Depart Market area for the Pontocho Restaurant District
  • 13:15 Arrive Pontocho Restaurant District
    Walk the district and allow me to familiarize you with the area and point out some places you should come back and try during the evening while you are staying in Kyoto.
  • 13:40 Arrive Gion Geiko (Geisha) Spotting District
    We will cover the little known history of the Geiko and Maiko and the history of the Gion area, eventually ending up at the famous Yasaka Shrine area
  • 14:00 Depart Yasaka Shrine for East Hongonji Temple by Taxi (1 hour)
    Stop by the entrance of Gion before enjoying some free time to stroll through the shops along Shijo Street. Find some historical shops carrying local goods along with modern high-end fashion.
  • 14:20 West Hongonji Temple
    Arrive at this beautiful Temple that holds the distinction of being the second largest wooden Temple on earth and the 6th largest wooden building. We will walk the halls here and talk a little more Buddhism and history.
  • 02:45 Depart Temple for a Samurai-founded (Buke Chado) Tea Ceremony
  • 15:00 Arrive Tea Ceremony
    Allow a fifth-generation Tea Master, skilled int he art of Buke Chado to make you some amazing Tea, Japanese style.
  • 16:15 Finish Ceremony and make our way back to Kyoto Station
    Maybe one more stop in a local Sake Pub. End Tour at Kyoto Station
  • 09:00-19:00 Tour Ends at Kyoto Station
    • Please note that transportation, admission, meals, snacks, drink and sake tasting are not included in the tour fare. An additional JPY 6,580 per person will be needed on site.
    • Children 10 years old and above can participate in this activity.
Required Items to Bring & Attire
    • Please wear appropriate clothing when visiting temples.
      During the summer, the temperatures will get hot, however, clothing that exposes large amounts of skin such as short shorts, tank tops, and sandals are not permitted on temple grounds.

    • Smoking is not allowed.
    • Lunch will be at a local restaurant and will vary depending on how busy the location is.
    • You are welcome to stay in Gion to enjoy the night after the tour ends or you may ask the guide to escort you back to Kyoto Station.
