Every year in May the Kamogawa Odori spring dance performance brings excitement to Kyoto. Featuring the geisha and maiko of the Pontocho district of Kyoto, this event has been held since 1872! The dances are held in the historic Pontocho Kaburenjo Theater, and often feature specially choreographed dances inspired by famous works of Western fiction and historical Japanese stories, where the dancers even play male parts such as samurai and powerful lords.
