I took motion sickness medication since the ferry ride was an hour long. The waves were rough, and many people on the same tour got seasick and felt unwell. Inside the boat, the guide's explanations and videos played continuously, making for a very fulfilling experience that kept us excited until we actually landed on Gunkanjima. Once we landed, we could only visit three locations, but the explanations about the past were enjoyable.

One thing to note is that during winter, there is no place to shield yourself from the wind, so warm clothing is essential. Also, since umbrellas are not allowed on the island, it might be a good idea to have a hat to protect your head from rain and sunburn.

I'm glad I was able to visit this World Heritage site!

As the guide said, it was the best condition in 2018. The sea was calm, and we reached the island with hardly any rocking. We were guided to three different points. I thought we could get closer, but due to the risk of collapse and the fact that it has been registered as a World Heritage site, I understood that the tour company could no longer take us there. I arrived around 9 o'clock, thinking I could browse the terminal and merchandise since the reception was at 9:40.

I was told by a staff member to come back at the designated time since it was before reception hours.

Despite this, they were actually accepting guests before the official reception time, and as a result, everyone except those with priority boarding boarded in the order of arrival...

受付時間前だとの事で、一旦はスタッフの方から時間を改めて来るように案内されました。

にも関わらず実際は受付時間前からの受付がされていて、結果的に優先乗船の方を除いては受付順に乗船される事に・・・

こういう事を関西でやったら暴動が起きますよ(笑)

しかし、それを差し引いても一生忘れられない思い出になりました

島の成り立ちから、島での生活と仕事、島民の引き揚げまでのストーリーは、ミュージアムで予習をしてから行ったので、かなり感情移入出来、理解も出来ました。

フェリーに乗っている間も元島民ガイドの方からのお話し等を聞くことが出来、上陸までに島を一周して外観を見せて頂いたり、上陸してからのお話しを聞けたりと、かなり充実していました。

近現代の日本の歴史の移り変わりに翻弄されたこの島が好きになりました。

もう少し島に滞在したかったのと、もっと色々見たかったのですが、規制があり、安全の為なので仕方ないと思いながら、島を後にしました。

I was really surprised by how attentive the staff was to various details. I went with a friend, but I could enjoy it just as much alone without any worries. We had plenty of time to explore from different angles and take lots of photos. When we landed, the gangway to the island was unstable, but several staff members supported us, and they encouraged us to take photos without hesitation. Onboard, the guide's stories, advice to avoid seasickness, and games were all really great.

Thanks to that, we were able to capture pictures from the best spots that resemble a battleship. The explanations after landing were also very clear, and there were several guides who showed us photos that matched their explanations and offered to take pictures for us. Additionally, on the return boat, they organized a rock-paper-scissors tournament with Gunkanjima merchandise, which was a lot of fun.

However, one disappointing point was that while it was mentioned that if you combine the digital museum ticket, you would have priority boarding for the boat, there was no detailed explanation of that system. The Gunkanjima Digital Museum opens at 9 AM, and we arrived shortly after 9, but there were already many people inside. It seemed that the boat check-in was happening simultaneously, and we were given something like a number at that time. Since there was no explanation at that point, I thought the boarding order was first-come, first-served, so I quickly went through the museum and headed to the boarding area. It was only there that I learned for the first time that the boarding order was based on the numbers given at the digital museum. 軍艦島デジタルミュージアムは9時からの開館で９時過ぎに到着したのですが、すでに中には多くの人がいらっしゃいました。
受付で船の受付も同時だったようなのですが、そこで番号のようなものを渡されました。
その時点では何の説明もなかったため、船に乗る順番は先着順かと思い、ミュージアムの内容は足早に済ませ、船の乗り場にむかいました。
そこで先着に乗る順番はデジタルミュージアムで渡された番号順だと初めて説明されました。
始めから分かっていれば、デジタルミュージアムにつく時間をもっと早めの時間にしましたし、ミュージアム館内も余裕をもってゆっくり見ることができたのになぁと思いました。
事前にHPや予約時の説明が不十分なのと、デジタルミュージアムの受付の方たちが不親切だなと思いました。
今回は20番台後半くらいでギリギリ２階デッキに上ることができましたが、事前に知っていれば、もう少し早く行って２階デッキの外側に座りたかったです。。。

デジタルミュージアム自体は、過去に住まれたことがある方が当時の様子を話してくださったりして、軍艦島に行く前に予備知識を学べてよかったと思います。
