Under an hour away from Osaka by bullet train, Tokushima is surrounded by mountains and fronts the calm Seto Inland Sea. Make sure to check out the Naruto whirlpools, Mt. Bizan and the lush Iya Valley. You can even join the ohenro (pilgrims) on tours around the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, which starts in Tokushima. In August the city comes alive with the Awa Odori festival, as the streets fill with dancers and traditional music.
