Quick tour of Asakusa

Reviewed by: Eric Canoy, 2018/04/19

Second to the last day of our Japan trip, we had booked a rental at Sakura Photo Studio in Asakusa. Being.that we had a large group, of seven participants, we wanted to go in early to get ahead of the crowd.

We arrived via Ginza line, and in a few short blocks we were at the studio. It was located in 4 story building on the corner of two streets. Signs were posted on thier windows to show where they were located. The elevator is small, so you'll have to go in small groups of 3 or 4 at a time.

As we got there most of the employees of Sakura Photo Studio were just getting in, but we're ready to help us get into our kimonos. They were really quick and patient in helping us choose our kimonos. One of the employees spoke FOUR LANGUAGES: Japanese, Korean, Chinese ( Mandarin), and English! That was really helpful especially when other groups started to enter the studio, including that the studio is very small for changing into the kimonos.

The staff was able to get us into.our kimonos within the hour and let us know how long we had the rentals for the day. They also had some discounts on Rik Shaw rides through Asakusa. You'll look extra traditional with your kimonos.

Overall, the service was great, the quality of the kimonos were great and diverse, and the staff was very helpful. Will do again if I come back to Asakusa.

Explored Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple in a Kimono!

Reviewed by: Anna, 2017/06/12

Newfound respect for the ladies who had to wear kimonos on a daily basis back in the day! I didn't know the prep was so tedious. It was both surprisingly fun and tiring to walk in a kimono. We ate street food, shopped around Orange St and walked to Senso-ji Temple while we were wearing them. We were lucky that the place where we rented it from had actual silk kimonos instead of polyester because it was a very hot Sunday afternoon. Would recommend this experience to first time Tokyo visitors!

Kimono Dress-up

Reviewed by: Sheila, 2017/05/23

I didn't enjoy this tour. I didn't expect that I had to strip off my clothes in a space (with just a cloth as a door) with other strangers. Wearing the kimono was uncomfortable. It was heavy and complicated to wear (and take off). That particular day was also hot, so I was all sweaty and uneasy while walking outside. Good thing about this tour was the friendly staff at the Sakura Photo Studio.

Reply from activity provider

We appreciate customers who let us know when things are not right. We are sorry you did not feel good with wearing kimono. Kimono is traditional wear that people need to put those in patience because of process to wear and with lots of layer clothes sometimes. Lots of people understand that. We are sorry for dressing room curtain. Extreme expression, `you had to strip off with other guests`? We never treat customers like that, anyways. We let our staff this issue notice as a serious warning if some of our staff treat you like that.

10/10, Would Do Again

Reviewed by: Hannah, 2016/11/25

I brought my family to Asakusa, solely to participate in this activity. At first, they were very apphrehensive, but after donning the kimonos with the help and reassurances of the staff, my parents enjoyed this as much as I, a young adult, did!
If you're looking for a fun family activity, or an activity that allows you to dress up and admire the beauty of Japan's reach history, then this is the one for you! The staff are super duper helpful, and assisted us in finding the best places to photograph our outing! The staff also pointed us to Kaminarimon, a Japanese gate whose shopping street leads you directly to Senso-ji, Asakusa's most famous temple!
My only regret is that the selection of kimonos mostly consists of flower themed fabric; there were little to none featuring animals such as skylarks, koi, or even just trees and branches. But other than that, this experience was well worth it!

Mother/daughter experience

Reviewed by: Penny, 2016/07/13

I did this with my 12y.o daughter. It was a great experience. Even though we don't speak Japanese, the ladies looked after us and did our hair & makeup as well as dressed us. They were very friendly and polite. The dressing up was just as much fun as the walking about. We only lasted 90 mins in costume as it was a hot sultry day and a festival was on so very crowded when we walked to the temple.

  • Many people wanted to photograph my daughter, and especially old women were appreciative of us being in kimonos.

Amazing Must Do Experience in Asakusa!

Reviewed by: Maiko, 2016/04/02

I could not have asked for a better way to spend my vacation day in Asakusa than being able to roam around with a Kimono. The moment I entered their office, I was greeted immediately by the ladies there, and I can attest that they are all professionals. There's an array of kimonos and hakamas to choose from, and it only took less than 30 minutes for them to dress me. For women, they even fix your hair for you. When I posted up my pictures, all of my friends who visited Japan before were jealous that I got to experience this. This is definitely another way to immerse yourself in the culture, and a great way to spend your visit in Japan.

Thank you to the ladies for being so dandy! You will be pleased to know that I recommended you to all of my friends and family.

There was a giant variety in kimonos, especially considering my friend was 5'5" and I'm 5'11. The service was prompt and excellent, and we had a lot of fun and lovely reactions when we walked around the Asakusa Shrine nearby. I'd definitely recommend this experience to anyone, it was the best thing I did in my time in Japan and well worth the money.

We had an excellent experience at Seisouji. We arrived at our scheduled appointment and was immediately greeted by a very friendly staff and they showed us a few choices of kimonos to choose from. Once we chose our kimonos my girlfriend and I were greeted down stairs by a rickshaw that gave us a very nice tour and dropped us off close to Seisouji where we walked around and thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon receiving many random compliments from strangers. It was a very fun experience and I highly suggest it to anyone looking for a fun afternoon in Asakusa. The staff spoke and understood very good English so communicating was never a problem. :)

Very fun!

Reviewed by: Miki Mouse, 2014/10/16

I’m glad that I took part in this tour. I joined with a friend, and it was as if we both turned into models.
First of all, the studio is conveniently located, only 1-3 minutes from Kaminari-mon on foot. As it’s a rented room in a building, it was hard to find it. When we went inside, Kyonming spoke to use politely. The studio is small, but Kyongming made us really cute. We wore elegant kimonos with Nagoya obis. I recommend the Nagoya obi highly.

They arranged my hair simply and put 3 hair accessories on my hair! After putting Kimono on, it's time for a photo shoot! I was so excited about getting photographed and making many poses in Asakusa! Please have a look at pictures I attached! We had free time until 5 so had a stroll in Asakusa. However, tourists looked at us, they wanted take our pictures like paparazzi, so we were in many pictures with people from many countries for their souvenirs.
It was the best experience ever. I would love to do it with my friends again! You should try it at least once, as it is a rare opportunity to take pictures of you wearing Kimono at this price!

She let me choose the Kimono and dressed me. She chose the flowers and shoes to match with the Kimono. I brought a paper fan but rented an umbrella as it was a hot day. Sakura San also gave me a 5% off voucher for rickshaw but I did not use it. I received compliments from many Japanese woman and also a lot of attention from tourists. I was asked by a western tourist if he could take my photo. I was very pleased with her service as I would recommend it to any lady to when in Tokyo. Asakusa is an appropriate location.
