The tour was all self-service, but the help at the stations is great. A more specific itinerary with hotel locations and train links would have been helpful.

This is a great package, would fully recommend it. We were given seats on an allocated Hikari train, but you can take any Hikari - you just have to sit in the non-allocated seating (which is quite difficult coming back on a Sunday night). This makes it very flexible as there are trains every half an hour. The hotel we had was nice, a little tired but great value for money. Kyoto itself was superb - hire bikes and see all the temples you can! Also definitely go to Arayshima to see the bamboo forest.
