    edo-utsushie舞台裏1 Take a seat in the theater to watch a magic lantern performance of the Japanese folktale, "Daruma Yobanashi". Watch the comical movements of the Daruma projected as the storyteller accompanies the story with live sound effects. The performance will be in Japanese with an English pamphlet.

    IMG_0083_x Make your way backstage where you can see all the replicas of tools used to create this phenomenal performance. Japanese magic lanterns was first introduced by the Dutch nearly 200 years ago with a metallic shadowgraph projector. The Japanese later made a wooden projector that was more flexible.
  • 20:30 Try the Magic Lantern
    kaiten The staff will show you five basic magic lantern techniques created by the Japanese. Let the staff and guide assist you as you learn how to operate the tools used to create magic lanterns.
  • 20:45 Practice
    CIMG0695 During the tour, you will be separated into three groups. One will maneuver the wooden projector, another will perform on the wooden instruments and the last group will tell the story. Practice with the professionals and the "Daruma Yobanashi" performance yourself!
  • 21:10 Magic Lantern Performance
    IMG_0135_x Now it's your group's turn! Work as a team to put on a portion of the performance and see how it turns out for a truly unforgettable, hands-on experience in Japan.
  • Yukata Photo
    Before ending your tour, wear a yukata (light cotton kimono) with the old Japanese city as a background and snap a memorable photo (one photo per person).
