Visit the spring water along the Itachi River (Enmei Jizo), selected as one of Japan’s Heisei 100 Famous Waters. The water, once believed to cure many illnesses, has been carefully maintained by local residents.
Kenichi Otsuka, a Toyama-based mountain guide with 13 years of experience, will lead the tour. He studied snow and ice science in university and has deep knowledge of Tateyama. His tours are known for showing “the best Tateyama of the day.”
Travel by bus from Toyama City to Murodo (2,450 m). Experience the dramatic journey from lush spring scenery in the city to the snowy alpine world of Tateyama.
Learn about the glaciers of Tateyama. In 2012, Japan’s first officially recognized glaciers were discovered here. Through exhibits, discover the relationship between Tateyama’s terrain and its heavy snowfall.
Enjoy lunch at Midagahara (1,930 m) if weather permits. Relax in the quiet alpine environment while enjoying a boxed lunch included in the tour.
May–June is also one of the best seasons to spot the Japanese ptarmigan (raicho).
Walk along the famous Snow Wall (Yuki no Otani), which can reach nearly 20 meters high, equivalent to a 6-story building. The melting snow eventually becomes a vital water source for Toyama. Waterproof shoes or trekking boots are recommended.
