More than a resort island for weekend getaways and honeymoons, Jeju Island is fascinating for its volcanic origins. Composed of basalt rock and cooled lava, Jeju was created as a result of constant eruptions millions of years ago. The island's natural wonders include Mount Hallasan, Korea's highest peak, and Seongsan Ilchulbong, the site of a volcanic crater rising from the sea. Visitors can also see cave systems where lava used to flow.
Owing to Jeju's unique geologic characteristics, the island was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage roster in 2007. Jeju is spectacular in the spring with its king cherry trees blossoming, fiery in autumn with its bright foliage, irresistible in summer with its abundant beaches and comfortably mild in winter. Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes UNESCO World Heritage Site includes Mt. Halla, Manjanggul Cave, Geomunoreum and Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone.
