This ancient Confucian shrine is the oldest remaining shrine in the country, and is where the memorial services for the deceased kings and queens of the Korean Joseon Dynasty are performed every year. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995, the ancestral worship rites (called jongmyo jerye) are still performed as they were in the 14th century, accompanied by ritual music and dance performances.
