Changdeokgung Palace (the Eastern Palace) was the preferred residence of the Joseon kings for 270 years; it was home to the Joseon government. This dramatic palace is very well-preserved and is one of the few palaces in Seoul that still boasts its original features. It was built to blend in with the surrounding landscape, with the Huwon Garden as a gorgeous example of Korean garden design. Changdeokgung Palace was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
