The Hwaseong Fortress is a protective wall constructed around Suwon, the capital of Gyeonggi Province. Built in King Jongjo's time during the late 1790s, the well-preserved military fortress allows visitors a glimpse into 18th century Korea. Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997, the fortress is also home to the Haenggung Palace.
Hwaseong Fortress is about 30 kilometers from central Seoul. To visit, you can take the KTX train or take one of these organized tours for your convenience. For a more magical experience, see Hwaseong Fortress at night or combine a visit with the Korean Folk Village.
