As a rule, we're skeptical of tours. With maps, apps, and a little curiosity, Europe is a delight for explorers. We come across countless treasures and memorable experiences off the beaten path by simply walking out the ... moredoor and AWAY from tourists and tours.
But we wanted to really get out and about, and the only reasonable way to reach the Kroller-Muller Museum and Hoge Veluwe National Park was by tour. And what a tour it was!
Our guide should be a national treasure in the Netherlands. He is a charming, intelligent, friendly and committed spokesman for his country, his culture, and his history. And a very good driver! We talked and talked and talked during the easy, one-hour drive out of Amsterdam into the green splendor of the low countries. From history to the economy to the life experiences of a native, we learned a lot.
On arrival we were guided in, and we were off. The collection is truly spectacular. Every trip to Europe, for us, is a series of museums, cathedrals, and churches, looking for and at the long history of Europe. The Kroller-Muller Museum does not disappoint!
We enjoyed a delightful lunch in the garden cafe, then headed out on bicycles to enjoy the sprawling Hoge Veluwe National Park. One CAN forget how to ride a bike, but we enjoyed the fresh air and cool, green expanse for over an hour. The day-long itinerary seems long, but in order to get there and back (one hour each way by clean, efficient highway), enjoy the collection, relax over a meal and cold drink, AND grab any of the free, fully-functional bicycles in the park, you definitely need the whole day. Don't shy away from it; sit back, relax, and enjoy it!
Our fellow travelers were charming companions for the drive, it's always fun to chat with other Americans when we're OUT of America. Familiarity breeds affection!
Plan ahead, commit to the day, and ENJOY YOURSELF on this spectacular tour package to the Kroller-Muller Museum and Hoge Veluwe National Park. You'll love it.
