Nishiki Market Walking Tour and Mini Sake Tasting with Maki or Kyoto Obanzai

Reviewed by: Heather, 2019/07/01

It was a fun experience getting to walk around the market, learn about sake, getting to try various sake types, and then taking all the items we gathered as a group and used them to create our dinner meal. Everyone was very friendly, patient and knowledgeable. We have taken this tour before a few years ago and we enjoyed just the same as the first time.

Cool experiencie, very funny and friendly guide!

We went as a couple to the market and sushi tour in Kyoto. To begin with the class takes you across the Kyoto Market area in wich you can taste, learn and see a lot of different stores, products, food, arts and crafts of culinary style. Along the way we tasted different things and had a quiz about the market at the end after learning a lot of the history. Afterwards we went to an old sake brewery where we tasted water from the well, 2 different types of sake and 2 types of homebrew beers, all of them delicious! And to finish off the day, we got to the cooking lessons where a couple of very friendly ladies took us tru the basics of some of the typical dishes in Japanese cooking like miso and cucumber salad, as well as making a sushi roll from scratch. It was a fun experiencie, the guide was very fun and friendly, all around a very pleasing tour, worth it if you are in Kyoto and are eager to see the market and understand some of the things that are not so easy to understand without a Japanese person explaining along the way!

Fun crash-course to the market, sake and sushi making!

Reviewed by: Heather, 2016/07/03

It was an interesting and fun crash-course through the market. We learned a lot of fun little facts along the route while we were picking up done ingredients for the sushi making part of the tour. It was nice to know what the various shops had along the way instead of just guessing.

The sake museum was a fun little experience and crash course about the history and making of sake. We got to taste some different sakes and rice beers, and my fiancé and I purchased their best bottle of sake and some yuzu as well from the museum.

Finally the sushi making was very fun and entertaining. We got to put together the ingredients for our sushi meal and it all came out very nicely. We even got a little cookbook to keep as well.

Nice tour and fun making sushi

Reviewed by: GOTM, 2014/05/19

It's a good tour to get to know the central area of Kyoto.
Our guide did a good job guiding us through the market to the Sake tasting and then the Sushi making.

We did the afternoon tour and it can be crowded in the Nishiki market at that time.
We went back on a morning and it's much nicer then.

The highlight of the tour was the Sushi making.
2 lovely ladies explained and taught us how to make sushi.
After making the sushi we had a nice meal.
