Churaumi Aquarium
Located on the sunny northern coast of Okinawa’s main island, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium isn’t just another stop on your Japan itinerary—it’s an unforgettable deep dive into the mysteries of the sea. With its jaw-dropping whale shark tank, hands-on marine exhibits, and family-friendly vibe, this world-class aquarium offers something for everyone, from curious kids to serious sea-life lovers.
Whether you’re planning a romantic island getaway, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
What is Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium?
Nestled in Ocean Expo Park in Motobu Town, the aquarium’s name combines “chura” (Okinawan for “beautiful”) and “umi” (Japanese for “ocean”)—a perfect reflection of its mission to showcase Okinawa’s breathtaking marine world.
Once the largest aquarium in the world, Churaumi continues to awe visitors with its Kuroshio Sea tank, housing whale sharks, giant manta rays, and more. It’s one of the few places on Earth where such large species are successfully kept and bred in captivity.
But Churaumi is more than just a pretty tank—it’s an educational hub, a conservation leader, and a celebration of Okinawa’s deep cultural connection to the sea.

Top Exhibits & Experiences
1. Kuroshio Sea Tank
This is the star of the show. The tank’s massive acrylic panel (8.2m tall x 22.5m wide) offers an immersive view of whale sharks, manta rays, and schooling fish. Don’t miss the feeding times (usually 9:30, 15:00, and 17:00), which are equal parts mesmerizing and educational.
2. Coral Sea Tank
Over 70 species of coral thrive in this open-air tank, bathed in natural sunlight. It’s one of the few aquariums globally to grow coral using natural light, and the colorful reef fish are picture-perfect.
3. Deep Sea Experience
Explore mysterious creatures from the deep waters surrounding Okinawa, including bioluminescent species and rare trench-dwellers that look like something out of science fiction.
4. Touch Pool & Tropical Tanks
Get hands-on with starfish, sea cucumbers, and other touchable creatures at the “Ino” touch pool. Great for kids!
5. Manatee & Sea Turtle Pools
Outdoor pools let you meet endangered species like the West Indian manatee and green sea turtles in peaceful surroundings.
6. Dolphin Lagoon & Okichan Theater
Catch a free dolphin show outside the main aquarium building. Performances showcase dolphin smarts and are held several times daily.
