Terezin was founded at the end of the 18th century by Emperor Joseph II, originally as an ingenious military fortresses for the protection of the Bohemian Kingdom. However, during World War II, in 1940, the Gestapo took control of Terezin, and the town was turned into a Jewish ghetto.

Terezin Concentration CampAlthough it was not an extermination camp, about 33,000 died in the ghetto. This was mostly due to the appalling conditions arising out of extreme population density, malnutrition and disease. About 88,000 inhabitants were deported to Auschwitz and other extermination camps.
