Traditional Okinawan Shisa Lion Dog Crafting in Nago

Booking is currently suspended.

What to expect

All over Okinawa you will see statues of shisa (guardian lion-dogs) on houses or temples. Now you can make or paint your own little guardian to bring home!

At Ryukyu-gama Shisa Park, you can create a shisa couple to bring home as a souvenir of Okinawa. Shisa come in pairs and are often posted on gates or roofs of houses, to protect its inhabitants. The male shisa has his mouth closed to ward away evil spirits and the female's mouth is open to share goodness.
Ranging from fierce to completely adorable, there is a shisa to suit your tastes. Located near the Churaumi Aquarium, this is a popular activity for visitors of all ages!

I made a shisa for the first time. It was so much fun that I lost track of time. The staff were kind and gave me advice when I asked for help! The view was great, and the open space makes it a nice place to use as a café after making your shisa.

It was my first solo trip to Okinawa, so I wasn't sure what to do, but I tried my hand at making a Shisa. Time flew by, and I really enjoyed the process of creating something. I was so happy that it turned out better than I expected. The instructor was kind and explained everything clearly, and I really appreciated their help. This time I made a Shisa with an open mouth, but next time I would like to make one with a closed mouth.

Last year, I made a shisa for the first time. This time, I participated with the goal of making a pair of shisa. The time spent was about 1 hour and 40 minutes. After watching a video to learn how to make them, it was fun to create them as if I were playing with clay. There are also examples on display, so it's enjoyable to find a shisa that suits my taste. It will still be a while before they arrive, but I'm looking forward to it!

I participated in a pottery shisa-making experience. I thought it would take about an hour, but before I knew it, over two hours had passed... I was so focused that time flew by. The finished product will be sent to me later, and I'm nervously waiting to see if it turned out well.

If I have the chance again, I would like to make a matching shisa as well! ★

I was worried about whether I could really make a Shisa from a round lump of clay, but thanks to the thorough lecture, even someone like me without artistic sense was able to create a decent (?) Shisa! They will fire it in a kiln, and it will arrive at my home in a month and a half, so it feels like I'm waiting for a Christmas present, and I'm excited (laughs). If you go to Okinawa, I definitely recommend trying "authentic Shisa making"!

I highly recommend this for those who enjoy clay crafts and sculptures. During less busy times, the staff will teach you carefully. When it gets crowded, it seems they show a DVD for explanations. There isn't much difference in color after firing. The packaging for shipping was also done carefully.

It's been a long time since I molded clay to create something, not since elementary school. It seems simple, but it doesn't go as smoothly as I expected. Before I knew it, I was completely focused on making a Shisa. The finished Shisa may not be something anyone would call well-made, but it's my one-of-a-kind treasure in the world.

While travel often revolves around sightseeing and dining, I felt that experiences like this, creating something, leave a lasting impression on the heart.

The staff's pleasant attitude also made it a memorable experience for a lifetime.
