Japan
In the morning, the snow-capped mountains were obscured by clouds, but when we arrived at Amida-ga-hara, signs of clear weather appeared, and the bright blue sky revealed a stunning range of white and green mountains, which was truly moving. Along the way, Mr. Otsuka, a specialist in physical sciences, provided an excellent explanation of the geography and history of Tateyama.
The temperature drops by 0.6 degrees every 100 meters, so prepare your clothing accordingly at the beginning of the year.
We were blessed with great weather, making it the best tour experience. Thanks to Mr. Otsuka's thorough explanations and the background knowledge we gained at the Tateyama Caldera Sabo Museum about the snow wall, we were able to appreciate the actual snow walls over time and feel the grandeur of nature even more. We drank spring water from the Itachi River that we collected in our water bottles, dug into the snow to create a table like a kotatsu, and enjoyed our lunch there. We also got to see a rock ptarmigan. Thank you for this extraordinary experience!
Since the weather was favorable, I felt the sun's rays intensely. I think it's better to bring sunglasses and a hat.
It was good. However, the opening of the bottle for putting in water is small, making it difficult to clean thoroughly, so it would be better to change it.
Otsuka, the mountain guide, provided a thorough explanation that conveyed his love for Tateyama, deepening our appreciation for the charm of the snow walls. Unfortunately, we did not encounter the rock ptarmigan, but it seemed that the other participants in the tour were able to see them.
The lunch we had was incredibly delicious, as we dug into the snow to create a kotatsu-style seating area. I highly recommend having lunch on the snow!
It was a guided bus tour, so we had explanations at the museum before heading to the Snow Wall, and we were able to have lunch on the snowy plains of Midagahara. It was packed with activities and a lot of fun! We passed through the Murodo Bus Center, which was incredibly crowded, so I think it was a great decision to take a bus tour that didn't require any transfers.
Since you'll be walking quite a bit on the snow, make sure your shoes are properly waterproofed.
This was my first visit to both Toyama and Tateyama. I had been interested in the snow wall for a long time, and I finally decided to go. After doing some research, I found this tour. On the day of the tour, our guide, Mr. Otsuka, mentioned that it was the best weather of the season with clear skies and no wind, creating great conditions. The easy-to-understand explanations from curator Mr. Iida, the lunch on the snow, and the knowledgeable guidance from Mr. Otsuka made for a special and wonderful experience at the snow corridor.
I need sunglasses and non-slip shoes. I went with a sweater, tights & pants, and a small packable down jacket from Uniqlo.
There are many snow wall tours, but I was looking forward to joining Mr. Otsuka's tour based on the reviews and experiences shared. From the moment I got on the bus, I had a great time learning and experiencing new things, and I'm glad I participated! I would love to join Mr. Otsuka's tour again in another season.
I made a last-minute reservation at 9 PM the day before. It was amazing to go to the flat without any issues! There were six participants, and besides me, everyone was from Taiwan and China. The guide, who was only 30 years old, spoke English very well! He was attentive and engaged each participant in conversation, adjusting the pace as needed. There were some older participants, but he created an atmosphere where everyone cheered together, making it a fun three hours!
The guide had a wonderful smile! I’ll definitely request him again next time!
- Please bring some water!
- You need a little stamina!
We had a great winter experience trekking with snowshoes to see the drift ice at Abashiri Hokkaido. Our guide Kaneko -san was excellent...spoke English and very professional in guiding us through the route where we saw deers, fox, birds and bear foot prints on the snow. We were rewarded with a beautiful sight of the drift ice off the sea shores (we can actually touch the drift ice) and Kaneko -san prepared for us hot chocolate drinks and biscuits. Had time for a small picnic and we took numerous photos of the drift ice and the nearby water fall. When you are at Abashiri, this is a must do activity... especially for us who come from a tropical country like Malaysia.
1.Always book with a reputable company for safety reasons.
2.Pick up services provided at hotels .
Seeing the drifting ice and ice falls for the first time was truly moving. It felt like a dream to be able to ride on the drifting ice. The guide was absolutely wonderful. During the trekking, they compacted the snow to ensure our safety and constantly checked in with us. They also shared very easy-to-understand information about the flora and fauna of Hokkaido and the drifting ice. Along the way, the soup they prepared was incredibly delicious! It was such a luxurious time in the great outdoors. Even someone in their late 50s like me felt completely safe participating. Thank you, Takki!
I tried snowshoeing for the first time and walked through the snow. It was drizzling a little on the day, and the visibility wasn't great, but the overall experience was very good. I was able to see scenery that I don't usually get to see, and our guide adjusted the pace to match ours, allowing us to walk and stop for photos. Additionally, they provided explanations about the snow and the ecosystem along the way. Overall, I highly recommend this tour.
The view from the top of the mountain after snowshoeing was so magnificent that I was amazed. Of course, the scenery and the warm drink provided by the guide at the summit were fantastic, but simply going down on the sled was incredibly fun. Even as an adult, I couldn't help but get really excited!
Make sure you're in perfect condition to ride the sled!
Since I participated alone, I was able to be quite flexible! The guide shared a lot of knowledge about the trees and wildlife along the way to and from the drifting ice, which was very educational and allowed me to truly appreciate the nature and grandeur of Hokkaido!
I think you'll enjoy it more if you pay attention to the casual trees and the sounds of birds! Since you might step into deep snow, it might be a good idea to have waterproof shoes that are ankle-leng
The outdoor lunch on the snow was canceled due to bad weather, and I was disappointed in the bus. Before heading to the Snow Wall, I asked Mr. Otsuka for a place to eat, and he kindly guided me. After that, he helped dig a spot with a shovel to create a kotatsu-like area, making it much easier to enjoy my lunch, which was truly impressive. The Snow Wall was also great, with no wind and not too cold.
I think it's easy for elderly people to go there since it's accessible by bus.
Not only the Snow Wall, but I was also able to experience the grandeur of Tateyama, the timelessness seen in the glaciers, and the beauty of nature through tourism. Especially, our guide, Otsuka, was wonderful.
It seems that Mr. Otsuka, the guide, is quite famous in Tateyama, and there are many people who join the Tateyama tour specifically to see him. Therefore, I believe Mr. Otsuka's guidance is the bigges
It was a very enjoyable and satisfying tour. The guide's explanations were very interesting, and I learned a lot about the charm of Toyama. I wanted to take more time to explore the museum. I thought about visiting again in a different season. The guide provided many helpful points, which doubled the enjoyment of our walking time. The tips for finding the雷鳥 (raicho) were very useful, and thanks to that, I was able to spot one. The weather held up nicely, allowing us to enjoy a leisurely lunch with a fantastic view. Despite the short time, the plan was full of attractions and was excellent. Thank you!
The guide's explanations provide the best information at that time, so make sure not to miss anything.
I came to Tateyama, which has been my long-time dream, to see the Snow Wall. Thanks to the guide, Mr. Otsuka, I learned about the rock ptarmigan and the snow of Tateyama, and now I want to visit Tateyama in the summer as well. I was also informed that research on the environment is being conducted here, both in Japan and on a global scale, which was very educational!
It was my first time doing the Shiretoko Drift Ice Walk. I was told that the weather and the condition of the drift ice on that day were perfect, so the timing was great. Walking on the ice and even immersing myself in the melting parts of the drift ice sea was an experience that I can't express in words. It created wonderful memories for me. I definitely want to participate in the Shiretoko Drift Ice Walk again!
Without worrying about transportation times, we took a direct bus from Toyama Station to Murodo! It was surprisingly easy on the body, to the point where I want to do it this way again next time. Although the weather wasn't perfectly clear, the stunning panorama of the snow walls and the Tateyama and Tsurugi mountains blew that away. The impressive snow walls towering far above the bus were truly a case of "seeing is believing." If you head towards Mikurigaike on the snowy path… you'll be greeted by a rock ptarmigan! Spreading out our lunch on a snow table while gazing at Toyama Bay and the Noto Peninsula was also a delightful experience. The experience of this extraordinary space and time was truly rare. I listened to a curator's talk at the "Tateyama Caldera Sabo Museum" near Tateyama Station, but I felt that this place deserved more time to explore. It would be a shame to rush through it!
I've always wanted to see the Snow Wall at least once, but the thought of the hassle of getting to Tateyama lingered for years. While browsing tours on Veltra, I discovered this one! Although the participation fee was not exactly cheap, I concluded that it was a reasonable amount. I joined with almost no prior knowledge, but the explanations were very clear, and the Snow Wall I saw afterward was deeply moving. Perhaps because I was tense while walking on the snowy path, I was sore all over the next day. Thank you for organizing such a wonderful tour.
I have been to Tateyama for climbing twice before. I was moved by the scenery that unfolded when I arrived at Murodō after transferring vehicles from the Nagano Prefecture side. While watching the sunset over the western horizon from Raichōsō, I thought to myself that over there was Toyama City and that the sea was already the Japan Sea.
And this time, on my third visit, I was amazed to experience something several times more moving than before, coming from Toyama City. First, I was surprised that the 3,000-meter peaks were only about 35 kilometers away in a straight line. Although I live in Kanagawa Prefecture, where the sea is nearby, it takes several hours to reach the Alps in Nagano Prefecture. That terrain is unique to Toyama Prefecture. I also enjoyed the deep sea and the delicious white shrimp. Lunch on the snow was the best. Traveling with someone knowledgeable about the area made it even more special. It became a memory I will never forget. Thank you very much. Please take care of yourself in such a harsh natural environment.
Thank you very much for the wonderful experience on the Snow Wall Tour. This was my first tour, and not only was the Snow Wall impressive, but the journey itself was very comfortable, allowing me to enjoy the magnificent scenery from the bus window. I also appreciated the local information shared, which made for very enjoyable conversations. Please send my regards to our tour guide, Mr. Otsuka, and the bus driver. Both of them were kind and wonderful people, and I am truly grateful. Thank you again, and I look forward to the next time!
Although it was clearly foggy with light rain and the view was non-existent, I had a great time! Despite it being a closed day, we started with a detailed explanation at the Sabo Dam Museum, and at Murodo and Ohtani, I was informed that there was enough time to enjoy the Mikurigaike Onsen.
At the snow-covered Ohtani, the tourists were relatively sparse, making it easy to enjoy the movement. I headed to the onsen while eating Tateyama soft serve, relaxed in the hot spring, and even encountered the target bird, the ptarmigan, and was able to hear its call.
Above all, on the return route, I had the vast snowfield all to myself, which I think was a rare experience in Tateyama. I felt that I was able to fully enjoy the pleasures that come with this kind of weather. I believe it was quite an advanced way to enjoy the area given the weather, but I was very satisfied as I was able to make the most of my time. Thank you!
Despite the forecast for sunny weather, I was disappointed to see the mountains covered in clouds, but beyond those clouds lay a world of clear skies. Below, I could see a sea of clouds, and while we were indeed blessed with good weather, it was a precious experience to start with the morning spring water and receive a thorough lecture about the melting snow from Tateyama. I realized how delicious things from Toyama are nurtured in this way. The time management and the gradual increase in elevation were also excellent, making me very satisfied with my choice of this tour. This is an experience that you wouldn't get by simply using public transportation on your own.
It was a tour that greatly exceeded my expectations in terms of satisfaction. Thanks to the favorable weather conditions, not only did we get to see the sea of clouds, but the care taken by the tour guide was also wonderful.
This is a tour around the quiet Shiretoko Five Lakes. If you specify your size in advance for gloves and rain gear, they will lend them to you (included in the tour fee). Fortunately, I was the only one on the tour, and the weather was clear, making it a great snowshoeing experience.
Thank you very much for participating in our tour. We are very pleased that you were able to see many of the unique attractions of Shiretoko during the harsh winter, including the frozen Shiretoko Five Lakes, drifting ice, and even a herd of deer at the end.
We also appreciate your feedback regarding the rental items. We prepared winter gear such as gloves, knit hats, and ski wear with the intention of making it easier for you to participate without having to carry bulky items. We are glad to hear that it was helpful.
Lastly, thank you for the five-star rating and your comments. We look forward to welcoming you back again!
It was my first trip to Shiretoko, so I couldn't miss the ice floe walk. I had heard that the main season had passed, but I decided to go for it and signed up!
When I participated in the ice floe walk with Picchio, miraculously, the ice floes had returned, and I was able to enjoy it! Picchio was very thorough in not only guiding us through the activity but also teaching us about the nature of Shiretoko, which made for great memories!
It was my first time in Shiretoko, and I had no experience with snowshoeing, but the guide's explanations were very thorough and easy to understand. It was a fulfilling experience that went by in no time. The guide's passion for nature and animals was evident, and I learned a lot as well. I would love to participate again in the summer.
Thank you for participating in our tour.
We are very pleased that you were able to enjoy the charms of winter in Shiretoko, such as the drift ice of the Sea of Okhotsk and encounters with herds of deer, thanks to the favorable weather.
As the seasons change, the wildlife and scenery also transform moment by moment, so we hope you will come back to Shiretoko in other seasons as well! All of our staff are looking forward to your visit.
Lastly, thank you for the five-star review and your feedback! It is very encouraging!
The pick-up, reception, valuables storage, pre-lecture, and support for putting on and taking off the dry suits were all very smooth. During the tour, a young female guide led the participants, taking various photos and providing lectures about the drifting ice on the ice, making the experience engaging. (Photos were shared online with a password that night.)
The participants included an older, slightly overweight pair of Chinese women (accompanied by a Japanese interpreter), a young couple, and four individuals (men and women in their 30s to 60s, including myself), and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
On the day (February 20), I planned to move to Abashiri and board the Aurora icebreaker, but since there was no drifting ice in Abashiri and the weather was bad, I did not board. (I also boarded the Aurora in early March the previous year, but there was no drifting ice then either, and it was a sightseeing cruise.) Utoro is recommended as it has a longer drifting ice season compared to Abashiri and Monbetsu.
My husband found this tour online, and at first, I wasn't very enthusiastic about it. I have a fear of the ocean, and I couldn't believe I would be getting into freezing cold water. However, once I actually experienced it, all my worries disappeared, and I was able to play joyfully.
I was happy to walk on the vast sea ice and get into the water; it was a wonderful experience. Although I had some concerns due to my age, I am grateful for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you very much.
