We had a great winter experience trekking with snowshoes to see the drift ice at Abashiri Hokkaido. Our guide Kaneko -san was excellent...spoke English and very professional in guiding us through the route where we saw deers, fox, birds and bear foot prints on the snow. We were rewarded with a beautiful sight of the drift ice off the sea shores (we can actually touch the drift ice) and Kaneko -san prepared for us hot chocolate drinks and biscuits. Had time for a small picnic and we took numerous photos of the drift ice and the nearby water fall. When you are at Abashiri, this is a must do activity... especially for us who come from a tropical country like Malaysia.

Seeing the drifting ice and ice falls for the first time was truly moving. It felt like a dream to be able to ride on the drifting ice. The guide was absolutely wonderful. During the trekking, they compacted the snow to ensure our safety and constantly checked in with us. They also shared very easy-to-understand information about the flora and fauna of Hokkaido and the drifting ice. Along the way, the soup they prepared was incredibly delicious! 当日(2/20)午後、網走に移動し砕氷船オーロラに乗るつもりでしたが、網走は流氷がなく悪天候の中の遊覧クルーズになったので、乗船しませんでした。(前年の3月頭にもオーロラに乗ったが、その時も流氷はなく遊覧クルーズでした)
ウトロは網走・紋別に比べ流氷のシーズンが長いので、お勧めです。
