On May 25th, the meeting point at Shiretoko Field House was in a slushy state due to the previous night's snow. Be sure to prepare for the cold (hat, gloves, and rain gear are essential) as we set off. 5/25知床フィールドハウス集合地は前夜の雪によりシャーベット状態。防寒対策バッチリ（帽子、軍手、雨具必須）いざ出発。

I experienced a full loop hike around Shiretoko Goko with a group of ten, including our guide. It had snowed the night before, leaving some snow on the ground, muddy areas, and droplets falling from branches above as we walked slowly. We encountered untouched nature, trees marked by bear claws, trees dug up by bears, areas of skunk cabbage where bears had lain down, and trees intertwined with vines that bears had pulled. Our guide provided a lot of explanations, and the three hours flew by.

The weather in nature can change quickly, and although it wasn't great weather, it was a very good experience. I must say, it was really great that our guide was a veteran.

As for clothing, I felt it was essential to consider the temperature and wear waterproof gear, even if you don't have rain gear. I wore waterproof sports clothing and a full set of rain gear to keep warm.

ガイドさん含めた10人で知床五湖大ループ全周散策を体験しました。前夜に雪が降り、足元には所々に雪が残り、泥濘、上からは木枝から雫が落ちる中、ゆっくりと歩き進み、手付かずの自然と熊の爪痕が残る樹木、熊が掘った樹木、熊が寝そべった跡の水芭蕉地帯、熊が蔓を引っ張り蔓と一体化した樹木等、沢山、ガイドさんからの説明があり、あっという間の3時間でした。
自然の天候は変わりやすく、好天では無かったですが、とても良い体験が出来ました。
おまけに、ガイドさんがベテランの方で本当に良かった。の一言に尽きました。

服装ですが、必ず、気温を考慮し、雨具が無くとも防水上下は必須だと感じました。私はスポーツ用の防水上下に、雨具上下のフルセットで防寒になりました。

I participated in the Shiretoko Five Lakes group tour. On the day of the tour, we started at 9:50 AM with a total of 9 people, including one child. However, shortly after departing, we received information about a bear sighting, and we had to turn back without seeing any of the lakes. Thanks to our guide, Ayano, we decided to try again in the afternoon. In the afternoon, two more people joined us, bringing the total to 11 (including one child) as we started again. We visited the Fifth Lake and Fourth Lake, but once again, we received information about a bear sighting and had to turn back. In the end, we attempted the tour twice but were unable to visit all five lakes.

Ayano, our guide, was very knowledgeable, and I had a great time during the tour. However, when there are many people in the group, if you are at the back, it can be difficult to hear Ayano's explanations. Even if you can hear her, the line moves forward when you want to look at something, which was a bit disappointing. When there are children in the group, they tend to move ahead quickly, creating the impression that the group is moving at a fast pace. I think it would be better if the guide could ensure that those at the back also have time to listen and look, or if the group size could be limited to about five people. This way, it would be easier to experience the tour while seeing the actual sights.

当日は9時50分スタート、他のお客さん(子供1名)と合計9名でガイドしていただきましたが、出発して早々に熊の出現情報が入り、湖を1つも見れずに引き返しました。ガイドの綾野さんの提案により午後に再挑戦することに。午後には2人増え、合計11人(子供1名)でスタート。五湖、四湖と回ったところでまたまた熊の出現情報が入り引き返すことに。結局２度挑戦しましたが、五湖すべてを回ることはできませんでした。ガイドの綾野さんは知識が豊富でガイド中はとても楽しく過ごせましたが、対人数が多い場合、後ろの方にいると綾野さんの説明が聞こえません。また説明は聞こえても物を見る時には列は進んでしまっているので、ちょっと残念でした。お子さんがグループにいる場合、どうしても子供は前に行くのでサクサク進んでしまう印象でした。後ろの方にいる方にも説明はもちろん、見る時間も確保できるように進んでもらう、もしくは対人数を5人とかにしていただけると、もっと実物を見ながら聞きやすく体験できるんだろうなと思いました。

I had an experience on March 5th. It was my first time in Hokkaido and my first time ice fishing for wakasagi, so I was both excited and a bit anxious. However, I received a phone call the day before to confirm the pickup location and course, and the service was very attentive. During the transfer, whenever we spotted wildlife, the staff would explain about the animals, which was enjoyable! They also taught me tips for fishing, and the staff would regularly check in, so I was able to ask for advice each time! By the end, I felt like I had improved, haha.

The fresh wakasagi was fluffy when fried as tempura, and eating wakasagi on the ice was the best!

There was a sheet inside the tent where I could place my belongings, so it was possible to bring a DSLR camera.

First, we went to see the white-tailed eagle, and while we could see it with binoculars, looking through the telescope provided by the guide allowed us to see its expressions much more clearly.

Next, we were scheduled to go ice fishing, but since we hadn't seen the drift ice yet, the guide took us to a high point where we could see it. The drift ice that had come ashore on the Shiretoko Peninsula was incredibly beautiful.

Then came our first experience with ice fishing! I was worried about whether we would catch any, but thanks to the staff's thorough explanations, we managed to catch over ten fish. When I was focused on fishing, I didn't feel the cold at all, but as soon as we finished, I started to shiver... Then, hot soup was provided in a thermos, and it felt like I was revived. We could also have plenty of tempura made from the ice fish, and the attentive service from the staff was outstanding.

I would love to participate again if I have the chance. Thank you very much! 😊

I participated in the tour in early November, at the end of the season. There were many news reports about bear sightings nationwide, which made me anxious about signing up for the tour, but it turned out to be a great decision.

First of all, having a guide made a huge difference in terms of feeling safe. I was able to truly enjoy exploring the Five Lakes. Additionally, walking through the forest while learning about animal tracks and interesting facts about plants that we would have missed on our own made for a deeply meaningful experience.

It had rained the night before, and the paths were muddy, but the guide had prepared rubber boots for us, which was a big help. While it's easy to wish for sunny weather, the misty, cloudy atmosphere of the Five Lakes was also mysteriously beautiful, like a painting.

I would love to visit again in other seasons. Thank you!

熊出没のニュースが全国的に多く、不安もあってツアーを申し込んだのですが、大正解でした。

まず、ガイドさんがいてくださると、安心感が全然違います。心から五湖の散策を楽しむことができました。
また、自分たちだけでは見逃してしまう動物の痕跡や、植物の豆知識を伺いながら森歩きができたことで、一層感慨深い経験となりました。

前夜に雨が降り、道がぬかるんでいたのですが、ガイドさんが長靴を用意してくださっていたので、助かりました。
晴天を望んでしまいがちですが、曇天の霧がかったような五湖も、絵画のように神秘的でした。

The guide had 43 years of experience, making them a very knowledgeable and veteran guide! We were able to take a walk while listening to valuable stories about Shiretoko Goko, the surrounding flora and fauna, the environment, as well as the history of the land and interesting anecdotes, which made for a deeper experience of Shiretoko Goko. Thank you for kindly answering our questions and accommodating us for photos at various spots. I had heard that November in Hokkaido starts to get cold, so I was prepared, wearing a down jacket, a Heattech shirt, Heattech tights, and windproof pants. During the walk, I was warm enough to even break a sweat. The autumn leaves were still plentiful, allowing us to feel both the autumn and the beginning of winter. The guide also informed us about how bears behave during this time, which made us feel safe while exploring. I would love to visit Shiretoko Goko again in a different season to see the rich nature throughout the year. Next time I come, I would like to request a star tour. Thank you very much for your help. It was in the afternoon on the day of the walk, but I was worried about puddles since it had rained in the morning. However, I received a message from our guide, Ayano, via VELTRA about the rental of rubber boots, which made me feel relieved to participate. It seems that during the morning course, there was a bear sighting right after the start, so they couldn't go on the walk. In the afternoon, we were on a course that lasted just under three hours, and when we reached the area near Lake 4 (about an hour in), we received a report of a bear sighting and had to turn back. We were able to stroll along the deck walkway and see Lake 1, but I really wanted to complete all five lakes. Despite it being September, there have been bear sightings almost every day, and it seems there are too many this year. Weather and bear sightings are a matter of luck, so I would like to challenge this again someday. Our veteran guide, Ayano, was very friendly and made it a fun experience.

散策当日は午後でしたが、午前中に雨が降り水たまりなど心配でしたが、
事前にガイドの綾野さんからVELTRA経由で長靴の貸出の連絡が入り安心して参加できました。
午前中コースではスタート直後にクマ出没で散策できなかったようで、午後は3時間弱のコースで5湖4湖まできたところ（1時間ほどのところ）でクマ出没の連絡が入り引き返すことになりました。デッキの遊歩道を散策し1湖を見ることができましたが、5湖全部コンプリートしたかったです。9月にも関わらず、クマ出没がほぼ毎日で今年は多すぎるとのこと。
天気と熊の出没は運なので、またいつかチャレンジしたいです。
ベテランガイドの綾野さんはとてもフレンドリーで楽しかったです。

Among the many tours that cover all five lakes of Shiretoko, I found and participated in a compact tour that visits two lakes. On the day of the tour, there were two groups with four participants. We were taught how to use binoculars and listened to a lecture at the field house before setting off. The pace of the tour was slow, and we occasionally stopped to learn about bear claw marks on trees, footprints, and droppings. These are things you would likely miss without the guide's explanations. Additionally, it's reassuring to have a guide when it comes to dealing with bear encounters. Fortunately, we did not encounter any bears, but we were able to see deer from the elevated walking path.

My first trip to Shiretoko! I joined the tour filled with anticipation of encountering nature and wildlife. On the day of the tour, it was rainy, but our guide, Ayano, was fantastic. With a kind and humorous storytelling style, she provided detailed explanations about nature and animals. I went at the end of August. Just as we were about to depart, we were informed that a bear had been spotted a few minutes earlier, so we couldn't go to the Five Lakes. The tour guide suggested either an alternative course, waiting until the bear left, or canceling. Since we had to return to Tokyo from Memanbetsu Airport that day, we chose the alternative course. Although we couldn't see the lakes, we explored the forest, saw trees scratched by bears, and reached the cliffs of the Okhotsk Sea, which was quite impressive. I recommend it if you're not fixated on seeing the lakes!

8月の終わりに行きました。さて出発というときに数十分前に熊が出没したとのことで5湖に行けなくなりました。そこでツアーガイドさんは代替コースか、熊がいなくなるまで待機するかキャンセルも有りと提案。我々は当日女満別空港から帰京しなければならなかったので代替コースを選択。5湖は見れなかったものの森を探検、熊の引っ掻いた木とか、オホーツク海の岸壁に出るなど、見応えがありました。湖にこだわらなければおすすめします!

It was reassuring when we spotted a brown bear, and I felt that participating in the guided tour was definitely worth it.

There were a total of 8 people in 3 groups, and the content was enjoyable for everyone from elementary school students to adults. Since we walked through the forest, comfortable shoes and suitable trekking clothing are essential. Binoculars were provided for free, so it was fine not to bring my own.

8月末なのでガイドさんなしでも散策可能な時期でしたが、いろいろと説明を聞きたく小ループコースを申し込みました。
ガイドの綾野さんは大ベテラン、落ち着いた口調でさまざまな説明をしてくださいます。自分で歩いているだけでは気づかない動物の痕跡や珍しい植物などがよく分かりました。ヒグマを見かけた時にも安心ですし、ガイドツアーに参加する価値は大いにあると感じました。
3グループ総勢8人のツアーでしたが、小学生から大人もまで楽しめる内容でした。森の中を歩くので、歩きやすい靴とトレッキングに適した服装は必須です。双眼鏡は無償で貸していただけたので、持っていかなくても大丈夫でした。

It was cloudy on the day of the tour, but I felt it was better than walking in the heat. The guide lent us insect repellent spray, but I think it's necessary to take measures against bugs. A short-sleeved shirt was fine, but I recommend long pants, socks, and sneakers. There were some people in the same tour wearing shorts and sports sandals, but they struggled with mosquitoes.

Unfortunately, we didn't encounter any wildlife, but we could see traces of them here and there. The guide was very kind and provided various explanations. They also took casual photos at the photo spots. The three hours flew by with the beautiful scenery and the guide's entertaining stories. It was a wonderful experience that allowed us to connect with the nature of Shiretoko, and it became a great memory.

We also got to see a fox up close, and although it was just under two hours, it was incredibly enjoyable. Ayano's explanations were very clear, and it became a wonderful memory.

I went on my first trip to Shiretoko and decided to join a tour to see the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Before departure, we received a lecture about how to avoid disturbing the bears and their habitats. During the tour, we were explained about various plants, mushrooms, and the actions left by bears and woodpeckers on the large trees. This was my first time in the Eastern Hokkaido region, and with almost zero prior knowledge about Shiretoko Goko, I decided to visit all five lakes. I joined a walking tour led by Ayano-san, which I was able to book the day before, starting at 3 PM.

I happened to be the only participant, so I enjoyed a one-on-one experience with Ayano-san, asking her various questions about Shiretoko Goko and her work as a guide while leisurely taking in the scenery. Ayano-san, a veteran guide, had a natural demeanor, and her love for Shiretoko was evident.

The day was clear and hot, with a maximum temperature of over 26 degrees Celsius, but once the tour began and we started walking through the forest, we were mostly shielded from direct sunlight, making it cool and comfortable. The lakes were, of course, beautiful, but I also vividly remember the reflections of the mountains on the lake's surface and the way sunlight sparkled through the trees in the forest.

Although I didn't see any bears, at the end of the tour, I was able to observe a mother deer and her fawn from above on the elevated wooden path for quite a long time.

The three hours flew by. Thank you very much.

初めての道東、知床五湖についての予備知識もほぼゼロのまませっかくなら五湖すべて訪れたいと思い、前日に予約できた15時スタートの綾野さんのウォーキングツアーに参加しました。

参加者はたまたま私一人。綾野さんにマンツーマンで知床五湖やガイドのお仕事のことなど色々聞きながらゆっくりと景色を楽しめました。ベテランガイドの綾野さんは自然体で、知床愛が伝わってきました。

当日は快晴で最高気温26度以上の暑い日でしたが、いざツアーが始まって森の中を進み始めるとほとんど直射日光が当たらず、涼しくて快適でした。
湖ももちろんきれいでしたが、湖面に反射された山々の姿、森の木々や太陽の光が森の中に射し込んできらきらしている様子も記憶に残りました。

熊を見かけることはなかったもののツアーの最後に高架木道で真上から鹿の親子を長い時間見ることができました。

3時間、本当にあっという間でした。ありがとうございました。

It was a three-hour tour, but we moved slowly while listening to the guide's explanations, so it felt like no time at all!
We explored the mysterious lake, enjoying the chirping of birds, the blue sky, the greenery of the trees, and the tranquility of the lake… it was such a wonderful time. There were traces of brown bears everywhere, and I was reminded that this is indeed their habitat.
They also lend you binoculars, so you can see the distant mountains, waterfowl on the opposite shore, and flowers. I highly recommend it!!

３時間という行程ですが、ガイドさんの説明を聞きながらゆっくりと進むので、あっという間でした！
神秘の湖を巡り、鳥のさえずり、青空と木々の緑と湖面の静けさ…とても素敵な時間です。いたる所にヒグマの痕跡もあり、ここはヒグマの生息地なんだと改めて実感。
双眼鏡も貸していただけるので、遠くの山々や対岸の水鳥や花々も見ることが出来ます。ぜひ、おすすめです！！

I was surprised at how much it has changed and how well it is managed since it became a World Heritage site! In the past, you could enter freely, and there were no guided tours. This time, there were four of us: two foreigners and my wife! Our guide, Ayano, explained everything in both English and Japanese, which I think was quite challenging. However, her explanations were easy to understand and very good. It also brought back memories from 40 years ago. Thank you very much.

I was also helped by the fact that they lent us rubber boots for free. If you apply on-site that day, it costs 6,000 yen. You should definitely book through Veltra. If you go to Shiretoko, it's a must-visit!
