What is the Setouchi Triennale?
  • It is a contemporary art festival only held every three years on islands located on the Setouchi Sea. A locally-sustainable celebration of art, architecture and local identity, the Setouchi Treinnale seeks to transform the region into a Sea of Hope, bringing focus to traditional lifestyles and connecting the Setouchi region to the world by shining a light on regional cultures. 2019 marks the fourth festival and is held at special venues on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.

When is it held?
  • The festival is held during the spring, summer and autumn season:
    Spring: April 26 - May 26
    Summer: July 29 - August 25
    Autumn: September 28 - November 4

How to exchange your Setouchi Triennale Passport 2019:
- Once your reservation is confirmed, you will receive a separate voucher from the activity provider by e-mail.
- You must bring your passport and print the activity provider's voucher and bring it to one of the following locations below and exchange it for a ticket.
- Important: Please note that if you do not have a printed copy, you must pay for another ticket on site.

VELTRA highlights on some of the participating islands:

Naoshima
♦ Known as one of the most popular islands, the iconic pumpkin by artist Yayoi Kusama can be seen on this very island.
♦ The Benesse House Art, Ando Museum of Ando Tadao and many outdoor works can also be found here.
♦ Please note that during the art festival period, crowds are to be expected. The island is also closed on Mondays but the Benesse House Art Museum is open daily.
♦ Transportation around the island: bus, motorcycle rental, bicycle rental, walking

Teshima
♦ Enjoy the views of both the sea and the mountains along with the wonderful rice paddies along the southern side of the island. Among the many artworks, the natural seasonal scenery is also a must-see!
♦ The island is closed on October 16 and 23 but will be open on October 15 and 22.
♦ Please note that there are no convenience stores and supermarkets on the island.
♦ Transportation around the island: bus, motorcycle rental, bicycle rental

Megijima
♦ Spot the unique Ote walls that protect houses from the bitter winter.
♦ Most of the island's artworks can be found on the eastern side of the island near the port.
♦ The Ogre's caves and the observation deck are also wonderful scenic spots to visit.

Ogijima
♦ Venture through the island with many maze-like slopes with a distinctive landscape and marvel at the wonderful scenery around the port and fishing area with various artworks on display.
♦ Ogijima is also known to be a cat island with more cats than people!
♦ Biking is not allowed on the island.
♦ It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes fit to walk around in.
♦ Luggage storage space is available on the island.

Shodoshima
♦ Also known as olive island, stroll through the island with beautiful olive trees and windmills.
♦ Discover the history and culture of the island as you enjoy both the harmony of art and nature.
♦ Along with olives, this island is known for its wonderful somen noodles that are wonderful to eat and take home!
♦ Transportation around the island: car, bus, bicycle rental, motorcycle rental

Required Items to Bring & Attire

    • Passport
    • Printed voucher by the activity provider. Please make sure it is printed clearly and legibly on an A4 sized paper. If you do not have a printed voucher, you will need to re-purchase the tickets on site at your own cost.
    • An official form of ID must be presented to avail of youth discount prices for guests ages 16 to 18 years old. Discounts are only available for purchases at the on-site information centers on the date of visit.

  • All Packages
    • There are no guides on this activity.
    • You can visit each participating artwork (facility) 1 time each during the valid period of your pass.
    • Separate admission fees are required for some works and facilities.
    • There are no discounts for admission fees to Chichu Art Museum or Teshima Art Museum. In addition, please note that the Chichu Art Museum now requires reservations to be made in advance.
    • Viewing reservations cannot be made using the Triennale Passports (artwork viewing passports). No refunds will be issued after purchase. Admission is permitted only once per visit per person. Readmission will not be permitted.
    • Tickets will not be reissued for lost, stolen or torn tickets.
    • The Triennale Passports (artwork viewing passports) do not include expenses required for access to the various venues (ferry fees, etc.). Group discounts or any other special discounts are not available.
    • The 3-season passport is valid for all seasons in which the art festival is held.
    • The Triennale Passports (artwork viewing passports) do not include expenses required for access to the various venues (ferry fees, etc.). Group discounts or any other special discounts are not available.
    • The 3-Day Ferry Pass is valid for 3 consecutive dates from the date of exchange.
    • If you wish to bring your own motorcycle, bicycle or car on board the ferry, an additional fare will be needed on site.
    • Advanced reservations for boats cannot be made. You may be asked to take the following boat if the maximum number of participants has been met.
