Recently, I had a tea ceremony experience with my three-generation family. The performance by the geisha was very elegant and evoked the feeling of a summer evening. We had a great time with the Kanamara-fune fun activities, and it became a memorable day deeply etched in the pages of our long lives. Thank you very much.

I had always wanted to see a real Maiko and, although a bit expensive (considering that I was traveling alone) I decided to do it. It was worth every single yen I paid for it!!
First, the owner of the Tea House is a very kind person. She explained everything to me in fluent English, I learned about tea and she introduced me to Tomitsuyu, the beautiful girl who performed the ceremony.
The sight of Tomitsuyu, the maiko that I met, was breathtaking. She performed the tea ceremony with the utmost care and then she danced a piece. Again, the owner of the Tea House explained to me some details about that dance.
Then it was time for questions. This provided a great insight of this awesome world. Tomitsuyu was very nice and she smiled all the time.
being a photo-addict I took a lot of pictures and she was kind enough to let me take as many as I wanted. The owner of the tea house even took my picture with her both in and outside the tea house.
I am seriously considering doing this again. It was an incredible experience and a moment of pure beauty and wonder. Two of the most fascinating Japanese traditions (tea ceremony and Maiko dances) combined.

I arrived a bit early on the day, so I waited at a nearby café while having coffee. However, it seems that Japan is still behind on smoking regulations, as the café was filled with cigarette smoke, which was terrible. I thought it would be better for my child not to enter, so we waited outside in the muggy weather. This was the only disappointing aspect.
Geiko-san's Japanese dance was truly beautiful, inspired by the evening coolness!!! She also kindly answered many questions and we had enjoyable conversations, making it a valuable experience. The matcha was delicious as well.
It was challenging to explain Japanese dance and Geiko-san to my non-Japanese father-in-law, but he said it was a valuable experience, so that was good.
Thank you very much.

I saw an experience of someone who traveled from Kamigamo Shrine to Shimogamo Shrine and then to Kiyomizu Temple, and since Kyoto has many one-way streets, I thought renting a bicycle might be more convenient than a car, so I rented one.
I left Kyoto Station at 11 AM and arrived at Kamigamo Shrine a little after 12 PM. It took some time due to a slight hill, but it was quick to get from Kamigamo Shrine to Shimogamo Shrine. After that, I passed through a street with tea shops and took breaks, arriving at Fushimi Inari Taisha around 3 PM.
I took various back roads and encountered a sudden rain shower, but I was drawn in by a lovely fragrance and found a wonderful specialty shop for scents, which was enjoyable. I was able to return the bike by 6 PM. In Kyoto, there are bicycle markings on the sidewalks, and there are areas where bicycles are prohibited in Shijo, but you can also receive simple maps for guidance.
I would like to rent a bicycle again next time.

I came from America. I always wanted to experience this at least once, and my elementary school son was very happy as well. I think it was a very valuable experience. When they danced right in front of me, I was so captivated by the beauty that I felt my heart racing. The "Konpira Funefune" game we played afterward is something we still enjoy as a family. At first, I was nervous and didn't know what to ask during the private talk, but gradually the conversation became lively and it was fun. Ai Tomita spoke to us normally, and I was glad to hear various things. I definitely want to go again.

We were placed in a beautiful room with tatami seating and lovely Japanese screens. This was booked as a completely private experience which made this all the more special. We were soon met by a lovely Maiko who entertained us with three lovely dances. Just gorgeous. Following her performance, she joined us in conversation while we enjoyed a most delicious authentic kaiseki dinner and sake! The two hours went by all too fast! Via our private guide who served as our interpreter, we all enjoyed the company of this poised young lady. She embodied Japanese culture at its best! Our time at Tomikiku Ochaya was an incredible experience. The feeling for us was like magic. The geiko of the house, Tomitae is a very gifted person. The samples of her artistic abilities gave us a beautiful sense of the closed culture that is so highly refined in these hanamachis. We would also like to comment on the owner of this ochaya as being very polite and welcoming to its guests. She was also informative about the interesting history of her ochaya. It was also a bonus to us to meet the maiko of the ochaya, Tomitsuyu. We highly recommend this activity to anyone who is considering it.

On March 1, 2017, at 5 PM, I participated alone.
It seems that arriving exactly on time is best for visiting Tomikiku.
It's a very easy-to-find location, just shortly after the Gion Kaikan, which is located in front of Yasaka Shrine (normally, Yoshimoto Gion Kagetsu operates there).
For adjusting your time before the appointment, you can also visit "Colorado Coffee" directly across from Tomikiku, but I highly recommend "Gion Café Rinken," which is a little further down on the west side of Tomikiku. This café is adorned with name-engraved fans used by geiko and maiko during summer greetings, and it is a beloved café that truly loves and is loved by Gion.
The master of "Rinken" introduced me to the magazine "Kyoto Book: Playing with Maps" (published by Keihanshin Elmagazine on March 3, 2017). It features a cover image of Tomikiku's maiko, Tomitsu Yu, and an extensive eight-page color spread titled "A Day in the Life of a Gion Maiko," filled with images of Tomitsu Yu. This feature also includes information about "Gion Café Rinken," Tomikiku, and images of Tomikiku's geiko, Tomitae, who is full of grace, as well as an introduction to the main plan from VELTRA and the URL for the reservation site.
At Tomikiku, I was warmly welcomed by "Okaasan" at the entrance, which instantly eased my tension, and I was guided to the second floor, filled with charm and elegance.
On that day, I was in the presence of geiko Tomitae. "Okaasan" provided a wonderful explanation of the history of Kyoto's geiko and maiko, the differences between geiko and maiko, monthly hair ornaments, and a photo album from Tomitae's time as a maiko, including pictures from the "eri-kae" (the ceremony of transitioning from maiko to geiko) in May 2016. With "Okaasan's" detailed explanations, I felt like I gained a basic understanding of geiko and maiko, even as a beginner.
After enjoying some sweets, Tomitae began to prepare the matcha (green tea) (see images). I was overwhelmed by her dignified and graceful presence, and I could hardly breathe. Of course, her beauty was beyond words, and her majestic appearance must be the result of rigorous training in the arts. I was moved by the high character of the Gion geiko, and noticing that my camera was left on the table, "Okaasan" kindly took several photos for me with my camera.
After enjoying the matcha, Tomitae stepped back for a moment and then performed a dance. It was an artistic masterpiece composed of countless delicate images, filled with emotion down to her fingertips. I truly felt that Japan's traditional arts and highest culture are preserved in motion in Kyoto.
After the dance, I had a brief conversation with Tomitae. Although I was still overwhelmed by her nobility, as we talked, Tomitae was as lovely and friendly as her name suggests, and the conversation flowed in a relaxed atmosphere.
We decided to play the parlor game "Konpira Funafuna." After explanations and a brief demonstration from "Okaasan" and Tomitae, I played "Konpira Funafuna" with Tomitae. It turned into quite a heated competition. I focused intently on the "hakama" (traditional attire) without being able to sing, and although I lost (it seemed Tomitae had a handicap of using her left hand), I recommend memorizing the song beforehand so you can sing it (if you search for "Konpira Funafuna," you can quickly find not only the lyrics and melody but also introduction videos for the parlor game). It seems that winning against Tomitae in "Konpira Funafuna" is quite a challenge, even for those who are not beginners. [This section was corrected and added to on April 2.]
I enjoyed another conversation with Tomitae, but time passed mercilessly, and our chat came to an end. "Okaasan" took a photo of the two of us in front of the folding screen in the room and another at the entrance of Tomikiku. These are treasures.
Despite the drizzling night, both "Okaasan" and Tomitae saw me off outside the entire time. Thank you very much, Tomitae and "Okaasa

I had given up on the idea of visiting a tea house that seemed to only accept regular customers, but this time, I had the opportunity to experience a private session at the long-established tea house "Tokikiku" in Kyoto. Since it was a group of 13 friends, the affordable price was also appealing!
First, we enjoyed a performance of traditional dance. The graceful hand movements, the way the kimono flowed, and the dance itself were truly mesmerizing. Then, we played a game to the rhythm of "Konpira Funefune," which was an exciting experience.
Additionally, we heard various stories about daily life, overseas business trips, training, and what inspired someone to become a maiko, which were surprising and impressive.
The matcha tea prepared right in front of us, along with the wagashi (Japanese sweets), was genuinely delicious.
Although the time may have been short, the experience was rich and fulfilling, leaving us completely satisfied!
It was a unique experience that we normally wouldn't have the chance to enjoy at a tea house, and it was incredibly fun. It truly became a wonderful memory. Thank you very much! 😊

I don't particularly enjoy writing harsh comments, so I hesitated, but I thought it might be helpful for those who will experience this in the future, and I would be happy if improvements could be made, so I decided to write my honest impressions.
I visited with my husband and an elderly European couple. As others have mentioned, I was surprised by the attire of the proprietress upon arrival. Perhaps she thought it didn't matter since we weren't seated guests, but we are still customers, so I would appreciate a more polished appearance, even if not in a kimono. I changed into tidy clothes for the tea house and paid attention to my appearance (which makes my insistence on this for my companions feel a bit awkward).
When we entered at the scheduled time, there was no response when I first greeted, and the entrance had a somewhat dirty feel. The upstairs room also lacked a sense of cleanliness, leaving my companions speechless, saying, "Wait, is this it...? I thought tea houses were places for the bourgeoisie."
The proprietress was friendly and explained things in English, but after we had tea, she left, leaving only the newly appointed geisha, Tomoe Ai, who just sat silently. The atmosphere became very tense, and it was awkward to the point where we felt we had to be considerate. I have a personal connection to geishas, as my grandparents were friends with local geishas, and I had played with them and learned traditional dance as a child, so I had high expectations, thinking, "How wonderful it must be to meet a geisha from Kyoto." Geishas are supposed to be "professionals of hospitality" who entertain people. Yet, this awkwardness made me worry if they were reluctant about such activities.
After a while, Tomoe Ai quietly said, "You can take pictures," but it seemed like she might be struggling too. While it's understandable given her youth, she has been a geisha for five years since entering the flower district, so I hoped for a more pleasant atmosphere.
I felt reassured that English support was available, but the proprietress left partway through, and the remaining geisha only spoke Japanese, so I had to translate everything, making me feel, "Why am I doing this when I'm not a guide?" What would happen if it were only foreigners?
At the end, she performed on the shamisen. It seems that recently, the number of young women aspiring to be maiko or geisha has decreased, and perhaps the training isn't as strict anymore. I hope she becomes better at both conversation and shamisen playing in the future. I wrote some harsh things, but my expectations were high, and I genuinely wanted first-time foreign visitors to enjoy meeting a geisha, which is why I chose to express my thoughts.
Lastly, Tomoe Ai is still a young woman who has just reached adulthood. I hope she works hard and thrives in her long future ahead.

First of all, most of the group was late but Gion Tomikiku was soooo accommodating! I also asked if I could add more children to the group and they were fine. The hostess met us out on the corner to make sure we would make it! Our hostess made sure the toddler had some cake to keep her busy. And then we had a geiko entertain us and make us tea. We got to ask questions. This is something I've wanted to do since I was a little girl so a dream came true and it was an amazing experience!
