I participated alone, but it was a group experience with students on a school trip and travelers from Korea.
At some point, the instructor started explaining in English, which was also helpful for my English studies.
Although I wasn't able to make the sweets look perfect, they turned out to be a nice souvenir, and I enjoyed them deliciously.

It was an experience I found the day before my trip to Kyoto at the end of the year, and it turned out to be a great decision. Although I made a reservation for a handkerchief, when we arrived at the shop, there were various items available, and each of the four family members chose T-shirts, book covers, and pouches, settling the difference at the end. While looking at the samples, we had fun discussing colors based on our individual tastes, and we ended up creating wonderful, unique pieces that we were very satisfied with. I think anyone from elementary school age and up can enjoy this.

ハンカチで予約したものの、お店に行くと様々なアイテムがあり、家族４人それぞれがTシャツやブックカバー、巾着などを選び最後に差額を精算しました。

We participated as a family of four, with my husband and I and our two daughters who are university and high school students. We were looking for a hands-on experience in Kyoto, and since both of them were getting their nails done during summer vacation, we thought pottery would be difficult, so we chose this based on the great reviews. Before the Kyo-Yuzen dyeing experience, we visited Nishiki Market for lunch, but it took us about 30 minutes to walk there at a leisurely pace. We arrived sweating from the heat, but the stylish and beautiful building was very soothing. There were also chic shops and restaurants attached, and I wish we had had lunch there.
When it came time for the experience, all the instructors were very kind and pleasant, and I really felt that we made the right choice coming here. Since we could dye both the front and back of the T-shirts with Kyo-Yuzen, we enjoyed selecting from various stencils. As we worked, we started to get the hang of it, and we were allowed to change or add stencils freely. There was no time limit, so we could chat as a family or work quietly, making for a truly fulfilling and wonderful time. A man who seemed to be the shop owner kindly checked on us several times, allowing us to fully enjoy the painting without worrying about time. They also lent us aprons, which was reassuring.
I want to go back to Kyoto again with the purpose of doing this Kyo-Yuzen dyeing! Honestly, I was so satisfied that I thought, "Is this price really okay?" On the way back, we took a taxi to Nishiki Market for about 1000 yen and enjoyed ourselves again!

大学生、高校生の娘2人と私たち夫婦の4人で参加しました。京都で何か手作業の体験をしたいと探していましたが、ふたりとも夏休みでネイルをしているので、陶芸は難しいねということと口コミの良さで選びました。京友禅染め体験の前にお昼がてら、錦市場を見学して行きましたが、ゆっくり歩きで30分ほどかかってしまいました。暑くて大汗かきながら着いたら、とてもおしゃれで素敵な建物で癒されました。おしゃれなお店やレストラン？も併設されていて、ここでランチにすれば良かったです。
そして、いざ体験になりましたが、どの先生方もとても親切で感じがよくて、本当にここにして良かった〜と思いました。
Tシャツは表も裏も京友禅染めをすることができるので、何種類もの型紙を選んで楽しめました。やっているうちにコツもわかってきて、途中で型紙を変えたり、追加したりも自由にさせてもらえました。時間制限もなくて、家族でおしゃべりしたり、黙々と作業したりと、本当に充実した素晴らしい時間でした。また、きっとここの店主さんと思われる男性が優しく何度も声をかけてくださり、時間もなにも気にせずに思う存分に絵付けを堪能できました。エプロンも貸してくださいますので、安心でした。
この京友禅染めを目的にまた京都に行きたいと思います！正直、このお値段でいいの？と思ったほど大満足でした。
帰りはタクシーで錦市場まで1000円くらいで到着できて、また、楽しみました！
本当に楽しくておすすめです。

It was a more challenging task than I had expected. I thought it would take a maximum of two hours, but the design I chose was complex and took about three and a half hours. I had plans after the experience, and I was on the edge of whether I would make it in time or not. I've heard that some people took a whole day to complete their designs, so it seems wise to plan your schedule carefully.
Each step takes quite a bit of time and requires delicate work, so it's better to decide on your design early. I ended up choosing a very intricate design and struggled with it. Also, there's a possibility that your hands and clothes will be covered in glitter (not overly shiny). It can come off after washing your hands a few times, but it doesn't come off immediately. I wished I had gloves.

I made matching T-shirts with my 8-year-old daughter. We were able to choose our favorite designs from a wide variety and think of our preferred color combinations. The staff was kind and very helpful. I definitely want to visit again. It seems like a great project for summer vacation homework as well.

I experienced this with foreigners. If you're not familiar with wagashi, just being given a lump of red bean paste might not give you a clear image of it. We were only shown photos, not the actual items. That day, there were two types: tulips and rapeseed flowers. They were supposed to guide us through the process one by one, but when they started teaching a group that arrived late, the instruction for our group became quite neglectful. A 9-year-old boy started crying because he couldn't make the tulip petals well. A 13-year-old girl seemed unsatisfied no matter how many times she tried and kept remaking it. Materials fell on the floor, and the gloves for hygiene became difficult to use because they got stuck with the red bean paste, so in the end, they were working with bare hands. I thought to myself that this couldn't be eaten since they started without washing their hands. As a Japanese person, I thought the taste was good. 実物は見せてもらえず写真のみ。この日はチューリップと菜の花の二種。一つずつプロセスを追って教えてくれる、はずが、後から遅れてきたグループに教え始めたら、我々のグループへの教え方がおざなりになってしまいました。
9歳の男の子はチューリップの花びらがうまく出来ず泣き出しました。13歳の女の子はいくらやっても納得いかないらしく、なんども作り直していました。材料を床に落とすし、衛生の為の手袋もあんこがくっついて使いづらくなり、結局素手でやっていました。手も洗わずに始めたので、これは食べられないなあ、と思いながら見ていました。日本人としては、味は良かったです。でも、子供には難し過ぎると感じました。

It was my first experience making wagashi (Japanese sweets). It was a simple activity that allowed us to enjoy some basic shaping with a few tools. Since I didn't have much time, I took one home and left the rest. The sweet bean paste wasn't too sweet and was tastier than I expected. There were times when my daughter couldn't hear the explanations because a group of male students who arrived late were talking too loudly. I understand the excitement of having fun with friends on a trip, but I wished they could have been a bit more reserved, and I would have appreciated some guidance from the instructor.

There were many school trip students, and I thought it might be a bit challenging before it started, but there were assistants who taught us patiently. I think the time allocation was good and not too busy. It was also a great idea to include the matcha tea afterward. I enjoyed tasting the sweets and matcha. The timing was perfect as we checked out just before our return Shinkansen.
Time allowed was good for each section. The explanation was patient and detailed. The demonstration was good, so I could understand what they wanted to say even though they didn’t spend time in English.
