I participated with my daughter, who is in the lower grades of elementary school. I had read in reviews that registration is not accepted until five minutes before the start, so we spent some time at Kyoto Station before walking over. It was a bit hot, but the scenery was nice and it was an easy-to-understand location, making it perfect for a stroll.
When we entered the room, there were long tables set up, and we were guided to sit by group. Materials and tools were prepared at our seats, and my daughter was excited! A young female staff member explained everything clearly at the front, but the pace of work varied among individuals, and especially since we were a slow-paced parent-child duo, there was a mismatch between the explanation and what we were doing. However, another staff member was walking around and kindly checked on us.
The activity involved something like clay work, where we colored white bean paste and kneaded it. The final product turned out reasonably well, but I thought that traditional Japanese sweets artisans are truly amazing. My daughter also had a fun experience and said she wanted to make more. However, she mentioned that the gloves for children were too big, making it difficult to work.
We each made two pieces, so we enjoyed two on the spot and took the rest home as souvenirs for our family. They were delicious, with a light sweetness and a moist texture.
I would like to try again when the season changes and different types of wagashi are available. Thank you for a wonderful time!

I traveled to Kyoto with my wife and daughter. Due to the impact of the coronavirus, my sixth-grade daughter has missed out on most school events like field trips, so we decided to have a family trip instead. We found a wagashi (Japanese sweets) making experience while looking for something to do on the morning of our last day. My daughter loves making sweets, but this was her first attempt at wagashi. Using the prepared white bean paste and red bean paste, she worked hard while listening to the instructions. Thanks to the detailed explanations, we successfully completed it in about 30 minutes! She mentioned that shaping the sweets was challenging, but she had a lot of fun. We enjoyed the sweets on the Shinkansen ride back, and they were delicious, made with quality ingredients and my daughter's heartfelt effort! It became a precious time and a memorable family trip.

During the week of Silver Week, I decided to take a late summer vacation and travel to Kyoto with a friend on a weekday after a four-day holiday. This time, I wanted to do something beyond just visiting famous spots, and inspired by a recent drama about wagashi (Japanese sweets) artisans, I signed up for a wagashi and tea ceremony experience.
Neither of us usually eats wagashi or drinks tea, so it was our first experience with both. However, the instructor taught us in a kind and enjoyable one-on-one manner, making it a very satisfying experience. Not only did we make and enjoy the sweets, but we also learned fundamental knowledge about wagashi and tea, which made it a truly valuable experience.
For the wagashi, I made cosmos and chrysanthemum flowers. My chrysanthemum didn't have the yellow bean paste sticking well, so it didn't look great. I learned that this happens when the bean paste dries out, making it difficult for the yellow to stick. I was impressed to see some other participants had made beautiful ones. It was reassuring to see others with similar results as mine.
Overall, it was a fulfilling experience to eat the wagashi and enjoy the tea ceremony.

We participated in the handkerchief plan as a family of four, with two children (ages 5 and 3). When we first received the explanation of how it works, I thought, "This might be too difficult for the kids." However, my 5-year-old became so engrossed that he completed three different designs. He seemed to be so pleased with the results that during our one-night, two-day trip, he carried the handkerchief everywhere and proudly showed it off to everyone.
My 3-year-old also dyed a flower design, but her attention span didn't last as long. The rest of the time, the parents enjoyed it. It was a fun hour that went by in no time.

I participated in a monitoring tour this time. It was my first time making wagashi, and I made two pieces: a cosmos flower and a chrysanthemum, which took about 30 minutes to complete. I learned some interesting facts and quizzes about tea and wagashi, which was very informative. However, the explanations were a bit fast, and I felt rushed, as I was still in the middle of the process when the next explanation started. The experience itself was enjoyable. Also, I arrived a bit early, but I couldn't enter until just in time, so I had to wait outside in the heat, which I think should be improved.

I wanted to experience making wagashi in Kyoto, so I researched and found a place that was easily accessible from the station and allowed me to participate hands-free, so I made a reservation. The staff were kind and friendly, and they explained everything step by step in detail, which made it easy for me, even as a beginner with two left hands! I was able to create unique pieces by adjusting the pressure, rolling out the dough, and shaping them. I heard that the flower motifs for the wagashi change with the seasons, so I would like to visit again at a different time.

I participated in a wagashi (Japanese sweets) making experience for the first time. The staff were very approachable and worked efficiently, which made the experience smooth. Since the activity takes place in a tatami room with pipe chairs, I think it can accommodate a wide range of ages. However, since you have to take off your shoes, it would be a good idea to bring socks if you're concerned about being barefoot.
As for COVID-19 measures, they ensured proper ventilation in the room, and everyone wore masks and gloves, and there was disinfection. The wagashi making was neither too difficult nor too easy, making it enjoyable for adults as well. I definitely want to participate again.

This time, I visited Kyoto with my mother and sisters for a girls' trip. I had been looking forward to making traditional Japanese sweets, as I have been interested in it for a long time. We got lost and arrived just in time for our meeting, but the staff kindly welcomed us, allowing us to start the experience with ease. We made two types of seasonal sweets (chrysanthemum and cosmos). I was a bit anxious about whether I could do it well since it was my first experience, but with the staff's clear explanations and demonstrations, we were able to proceed smoothly. It was a bit challenging to score each petal of the cosmos sweet with a spatula, but I was happy with how cute it turned out. The taste was also satisfying.

The staff wore face shields and masks, and the ventilation was good, so the COVID-19 measures were properly implemented. I thought it would be mostly for foreigners, but almost everyone was Japanese. There were families with children, groups of friends, and solo visitors, but it felt like there were more women. The staff were friendly, engaging in conversation and even taking commemorative photos, creating a very nice atmosphere. Due to time constraints, the explanations felt a bit rushed, but it was easy to make even for beginners, and since they used good quality ingredients, it was very easy and delicious to enjoy. In the tea experience area, there were photos of Kyoto scenery on one wall, which was perfect for Instagram!

This time, I experienced it with a friend. Although I usually have opportunities to eat wagashi, it was my first time making it myself, and I participated with a mix of anxiety about whether I could make it beautifully, given my clumsiness, and excitement. The first flower shape I made didn't turn out exactly like the example, but I was quite satisfied with the result. The second task of pressing the anko into the holey ladle was very enjoyable. This Sunday, my husband and I experienced making wagashi (Japanese sweets) and a tea ceremony for the first time. Although I felt a bit anxious due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to participate with peace of mind as they conducted temperature checks and provided alcohol disinfectant, and there was a comfortable distance between participants and the instructor. The wagashi-making was easy to understand, even for beginners, and my clumsy husband was able to make some too. During the tea ceremony experience, we were the only ones there, and we learned everything from the explanation of the tools to how to prepare the tea, which we enjoyed very much. We had an experience making traditional Japanese sweets in the fall, creating cosmos and chrysanthemums. There were about 15 of us starting at the same time, but three staff members were there to help, so they guided us through any uncertainties. It was quite challenging, but I enjoyed making them, so it was great. You can enjoy the sweets on-site, but if you don't include the tea experience, you'll need to bring your own tea. You can also take them home for an additional box fee.
As for COVID-19 measures, temperature checks, disinfection, and mask-wearing are mandatory. The staff also had face shields and other precautions in place.
The start was a bit hectic, as the seating wasn't prepared, and the flow seemed a bit chaotic, possibly due to not being accustomed to the COVID-19 protocols, which was slightly concerning.

I experienced making wagashi (Japanese sweets) for the first time. I didn't have any prior knowledge, but the staff taught me patiently, making it a fun experience. They also shared interesting trivia about wagashi, which was educational. Even as someone who is not very skilled, I was satisfied with the beautiful colors and shapes I created. If you love matcha, I definitely recommend participating in the tea ceremony experience. However, if I had to mention one thing I would like to improve, it would be that there was not enough time to eat after making the wagashi. Since I participated in the tea ceremony, I only had about 10 minutes to eat after preparing the matcha. With the next group of customers arriving, those who prefer to take their time might feel a bit rushed (laughs). It was a great experience, and I was happy to have my photos taken.

This time, I traveled to Kyoto with a friend. Until now, our main focus has been visiting temples and shrines, so we wanted to try something more characteristic of Kyoto and signed up for a workshop.
I was a bit anxious about whether we could make two items in 30 minutes, including time for taking photos, but with the guidance of the kind and attentive staff, we managed to do it well. It felt more like a concentrated 30 minutes rather than a rushed experience.
I was very satisfied with the finished wagashi, and the two pieces turned out to be very cute. I heard that the designs change with the seasons, so I would like to try again.
I also felt that sufficient measures were taken for COVID-19 prevention. While hand washing is not done, hand sanitizing is, and we wore disposable gloves throughout the experience, so I don't think there were any particular issues. However, the inside of the gloves was sweaty after the experience, and wet wipes were provided.

I had many new experiences for the first time, and it was very enjoyable; I spent a fulfilling time. I was impressed by how kindly and patiently the staff explained things to us, even though we weren't doing well. The infection control measures were properly implemented, with gloves being changed multiple times and thorough disinfection, which made me feel safe. I experienced this with my husband and child. It is conveniently located in the city, and even though we participated during the hot summer, we were able to access it smoothly. I love Kyoto and have traveled here many times, but this time I thought, "I want to have a unique Kyoto experience!" My daughter, who is a university student, and I both love seeing and eating beautiful wagashi (Japanese sweets), and I was excited to see if I could make such beautiful wagashi myself. It was my first experience, but I was taught very carefully, and I was able to enjoy making them.
After finishing and taking lots of photos, when I enjoyed the matcha I whisked myself along with the sweets, I became quite attached to them and felt it was almost a shame to eat them. The taste was also surprising; I heard they use ingredients from a long-established wagashi shop, and they were very delicious.

I am grateful for the opportunity to provide my children, who are in the first year of junior high and sixth grade, with a memorable experience this summer. While I often see where traditional Japanese sweets are made, it was great to personally experience that it truly requires the skills of a craftsman. The COVID-19 measures were properly implemented, creating a safe and secure environment, and the kind and thorough explanations allowed the children to have an enjoyable time. During our visit, we coincidentally encountered a beautiful geisha leaving, and we talked about wanting to try a geisha experience next time as we headed home. The sweets we made were intended as a souvenir for their grandmother, so we brought them home without eating any. Since it was early in the morning, we were the only participants. The instructor was wearing a face shield and a mask, taking proper precautions, and there was hand sanitizer at the entrance. I felt safe while creating.
We made hibiscus and sunflowers. It felt a bit challenging, but it was very enjoyable, and the teaching was incredibly thorough, making it a fun experience.

We wanted to experience something truly Kyoto-like, so we used this service as a couple. The staff taught us with great care, and we had a wonderful time together! After finally arriving at the store under the hot sun, the staff warmly welcomed me. I had a very enjoyable time. The wagashi (Japanese sweets) involved simple tasks, but since it's something I don't usually do, it was a refreshing experience. The flower-shaped wagashi was very cute, and as I personally love flowers, I was delighted. After preparing the tea, the staff stepped away while I enjoyed the sweets, which allowed me to eat without feeling awkward. Their thoughtfulness was wonderful. It was fun, delicious, and a great experience overall. When I visit Kyoto again, I would like to enjoy different wagashi in a different season.

I looked into experiences for elementary school children and utilized the nerikiri and tea ceremony experience at "Japanese Culture Experience An."
The process moved along at a good pace, but the steps were easy to understand, allowing us to make nerikiri for the first time.
Even the younger children, despite being a bit clumsy, worked hard to create their own nerikiri and were very satisfied with the deliciousness of what they made.
For children who want to take their time and create something similar to the example, the pace might be a bit fast, but for elementary school students, the speed was just right, and they were able to shape their creations, making it a great introductory experience to spark their interest.
Despite having made a reservation quite early, the response was very prompt, which allowed us to leisurely explore Kiyomizu Temple and Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka at a pace suitable for the children's small feet, even with a baby who sleeps at 7 PM.

I had a reservation for 14:30, but when I arrived around 14:00, I was told at the entrance to "please wait until your time." There weren't any cafes or places to sit nearby, so I recommend arriving as close to your reservation time as possible.
Inside, we were guided in groups, and on the table, there were samples of what we would be making today along with introductions to the flowers. The samples looked a bit rough (I realized after making my own that I wasn't as skilled as I thought, so I apologize for that).
They also provided vinyl gloves, so I didn't have to worry much about hygiene. The pace of the explanations was faster than I expected, but if you overthink things, you probably won't have enough time, so I think the timing was just right.
My finished product looked quite ugly at first glance, but it was manageable with the right photo angle. After that, I was taught how to prepare matcha and how to enjoy the sweets, and the experience concluded. It was about an hour-long experience, and I had fun making things.

This is a classroom located just behind Heian Shrine, in the Craft Center. I arrived in the early afternoon and had a lunch bento (a Kyoto-style, charming lunch) at the cafรฉ on the first floor, which was being offered by the hall. The class started at 2:30 PM, and when I went to the venue on the third floor, I was the only participant. First, the instructor handed me two scent bags (large and small). Then, I learned about the history of scent bags and directly smelled three types of incense chips, which I mixed in my preferred ratio to create my own scent in the larger bag. The smaller bag was made with a different ratio than the larger one. Both bags turned out to be pleasantly strong scent bags. The entire process took about 40 minutes. On my way home, I placed the scent bags in a plastic bag, but even so, the fragrance wafted around my bag.

We participated as a couple and it was very polite, easy to understand, and kind. I'm glad we did it and we enjoyed it. If we come to Kyoto again, I would like to try other plans as well. They also have strong COVID-19 measures in place. I think it would be better if the location was explained a bit more clearly. We were able to experience matcha as well. It was more difficult than I expected, but I think it was a valuable experience. I believe it would be even better if there were more various experience menus. The prices are also reasonable, so I definitely want to recommend it.

It was my first experience making wagashi, and I think I did well thanks to the careful instruction. The taste was also very delicious. However, although it was advertised as a plan that included a tea ceremony experience, it seems that my reservation was only for the wagashi-making experience, which resulted in additional charges on-site. I checked my reservation later, and it indeed stated that it included the tea ceremony experience, so I feel I paid extra, which was a bit disappointing. I think it would have been better if the plan details were clearly explained. But it was fun, so I recommend it.

I invited my sister to participate because I wanted my 5-year-old child to experience it. The explanations were gentle and thorough, making it enjoyable. My child wasn't fond of wagashi, so the two of us made one serving (two pieces), but I was surprised that my son ate both pieces. I had a little as well, and it was very delicious. The matcha we ordered additionally was elegant and extremely tasty. I recommend this to anyone considering participating. Next time, I plan to invite my husband and mother as well.

It was great to have a 30-minute experience without needing to bring anything. There was one instructor and two assistants. The participants were all women in their teens to twenties. If you want to take home what you made, thereโs an additional 100 yen for a take-home bag, and for those who want to eat on-site, you can get matcha for 500 yen if you wish. I recommend this for those who want a short experience, but if you have more time, I think the course where you can see the artisans at work would be more satisfying.
