I had no experience in mountain climbing and I usually don't exercise, so I was very anxious, but I was able to enjoy the climb. It was cool, and there were places to refill water, so bringing just one bottle was more than enough.
I was glad to learn about the forests of Yakushima, and I was able to encourage the people I was trekking with, sharing the joy of reaching the top. It was a very enjoyable trekking experience.
登山経験が全然なく、普段運動もしないのでとても不安でしたが、楽しく登りきれました。涼しく、水をくめるところもあり、ペットボトル一本だけ持っていけば十分足りました。
屋久島の森のことが知れてよかったですし、一緒にトラッキングをした人達とも励まし合い、登りきった喜びを分かち合えて、とても楽しいトレッキングでした。
ストックはいらないかなと感じました。
足の疲労と筋肉痛がすごいので、ケアできるものは必須です。
1人参加の人も多くいました！

First of all, I'm glad I rented. Trekking shoes are a must. Since it was rainy, I was really happy to have borrowed everything.
There were many detours, so having a guide was reassuring. They guided us with detailed and rich knowledge about the plants and Yakushima, making it a very meaningful time.
Thank you for adjusting the pace for my husband, who couldn't keep up! (laughs)

Following the Jomon Sugi from the previous day, we were guided by the same guide. Although I was a bit tired from the day before, the guide was very considerate, and we were able to go at a slightly more relaxed pace to Taiko Rock. The atmosphere was different from Jomon Sugi, with the clear streams and moss being truly beautiful, and the view from Taiko Rock was fantastic. Since I don't usually exercise, I had concerns about my physical stamina, so I requested a private guided tour. The guide was considerate in timing our visits to photo spots, rest areas, and restrooms to avoid overlaps with other guests. They encouraged us during tough sections and points where fatigue set in, while also providing explanations and fun stories as we climbed to Jomon Sugi! Given the long duration of the tour, I think it would have been quite challenging without the guide. They took many photos for us, and I'm glad I made the request. Thank you, guide Hirata!

I was guided by an experienced guide, which made me feel safe participating. It was also nice that I was placed in a group with people around the same age. I was happy to have photos taken at various points. The 10 hours were quite tough, but I'm glad I decided to join.

It was my first time and I had a lot of questions, but the guide kindly explained things along the way. The pace was faster than I expected, and there wasn't much time to leisurely enjoy the scenery, but I was able to work up a good sweat!
初めてで分からないことだらけでしたが、ガイドさんが丁寧に所々で説明をして下さいました。思った以上にペースが速く、周りの景色をゆっくりと見る時間は少なかったですが、いい汗をかくことが出来ました！！

We participated as a family. I thought that playing in the rivers of Yakushima, which often has a lot of rain, could be dangerous for beginners, so we signed up. There were thoughtful arrangements made so that both my mother, who lacks stamina and is a bit scared, and my son, who is fearless and full of energy, could enjoy themselves. It was a day where we could play safely and fully use our bodies. As soon as we returned to the hotel, my high school daughter fell into a deep sleep and said it was the most fun of the four tours we participated in this time. Everyone was very friendly, which I believe helped our team work together to reach the goal during the challenging hidden waterfall tour in the afternoon. This hidden waterfall tour had quite a bit of water flow. The rivers in Yakushima can indeed change quickly and violently, which poses certain dangers. However, when it comes to having fun, a bit of thrill is something we seek. I believe it is the guide's responsibility to draw the line between thrill and danger, and I take that role seriously while guiding.

We participated as a family of four. The day before, we received a phone call where they thoughtfully suggested activities like river play and mountain courses, considering the weather and our family's situation, and provided detailed explanations.
Although it was our first experience with canoeing, we quickly grasped the techniques, and our 7-year-old daughter got the hang of using the paddle right away. We enjoyed canoeing upstream, swimming in the river, and catching fish and crabs, with a variety of fun activities that delighted the children. Even though we couldn't swim as well in the colder river compared to the sea, the refreshing sensation of the water and the watermelon we ate on the canoe became an unforgettable moment of summer.
After that, we headed to the mossy forest. While enjoying the mountain lunch they had reserved for us, we made our way to the trailhead and entered the mountain. They guided us while keeping an eye on the children. The mossy forest and the sound of the flowing river were mystical, and I was amazed by the deliciousness of the river water we scooped up with our hands.
Their knowledge of the forest and mountains was rich, and they gently taught us along the way. Although my expressions may be lacking, the amount of explanation and the timing of the guidance were perfect, making it easy for the children to listen.
Thanks to the kind and attentive guidance throughout the day, we felt that Yakushima was even more attractive. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by our slow pace with the children, which extended our time in the mountains, but I truly appreciate all the help we received until the end. 前日にお電話いただき、気候や家族の状況を鑑みて、川遊びや山のコースをご提案くださり、きめ細やかにご説明下さりました。
カヌーがほぼ初体験の私たちでしたが、コツも掴め、7歳の娘もオールに使い方に慣れてすぐに漕げるようになりました。カヌーで川を上り、川で泳いだり、魚や蟹取りをしたり、次から次へと子どもたち大喜びの遊び方をご提案下さり、川遊びを満喫できました。海よりも冷たい川でうまく泳げなかったけれど、気持ち良い水の感覚やカヌーの上で食べたスイカは忘れられない夏の一コマになりました。
その後、苔むすの森へ。予約してくださった登山弁当を食べながら登山口に向かい、入山。子どもたちの様子を見ながら、進んでくださいました。苔むすの森や川のせせらぎは神秘的で、手ですくった川の水の美味しさに感激してしまいました。
森や山の知識も豊かで途中途中で優しく教さいました。表現に乏しいのですが、説明量もガイドいただくタイミングも絶妙で子どもたちも耳が傾けやすかったように思います。
最後まで優しいお人柄で行き届いたガイドに、屋久島をより魅力的に感じる一日となりました。子連れで牛歩であったため、山の滞在時間が長くなりご迷惑お掛けしたことと思いますが、最後まで大変お世話になり、本当にありがとうございました。

They cover the points listed in the guidebook, so they provide detailed explanations. It's easy to review later, and they also take photos. There is a shuttle service to the hotel, and they offer sightseeing recommendations along the way.
One point to note is that those who lack stamina should be careful. Since there is only one guide, they walk at the front, so if you fall behind, you might get left behind. I participated with my adult child. I was quite anxious about the 8-kilometer one-way trek on the trolley path, but the guide shared many stories and took breaks at just the right times, and before I knew it, we were at the entrance to the hiking trail.
The hike was of intermediate difficulty. There were photo spots along the way, including Yakusugi trees, which really boosted my energy. I'm glad I went.

The hiking trail is well-maintained, so there's no chance of getting lost, but I definitely felt that having a guide was essential. Not only did they provide explanations at the highlights, but they also managed the pace and breaks according to each participant's stamina and fatigue level. Thanks to this, I was able to complete the challenge after turning sixty. The course is a grueling one, over 20 km round trip, but the emotional impact of reaching Jomon Sugi is unparalleled; I believe it’s not an exaggeration to say it changed my perspective on life. The joy and sense of accomplishment at the finish line, while dragging my aching feet along the trolley path on the way back, was an experience I could only have here. Thank you to our super guide, Mr. Mitsuhashi, for this wonderful experience.

In a word, it was amazing! I was guided by Mr. Ando, and I had a very enjoyable time.
I went on July 4th, and the weather was favorable, making it easy to walk. I was able to enjoy various shapes of cedar trees, including Jomon Sugi, Daiou Sugi, and Wilson Stump. The story about the village that used to exist on the island was also fascinating. It's surprising that they receive money from the government to cut down trees. The water supply points located throughout the area were incredibly helpful. Even though it wasn't sunny, the cold water pouring over my head and neck in the heat was pure bliss.
I think it's better to have a guide. While young people might manage to traverse the path without difficulty, the round trip on the so-called "Trolley Road," which takes about two hours each way (a total of four hours), can honestly get boring. It's just a flat path to walk on. The most enjoyable part would be walking while chatting with the guide during this time. It was such a wonderful experience that I want to go again with the same plan and the same guide.
P.S. I got gastroenteritis from eating raw chicken in Kagoshima, so I couldn't write my experience for a while. You should definitely never eat chicken raw.

若人であれば難なく踏破は可能でしょうが，トロッコ道と呼ばれる，行き返りの各2時間ずつ(たしか計4時間ほど)は正直飽きます．ただ平たんな道を歩くだけです．この時間にガイドさんと話に花を咲かせながら歩くのが一番楽しいでしょう．
もう一度同じプランで同じガイドさんで行きたいと思うほど，素晴らしい体験でした．
p.s.鹿児島での鳥刺しに当たり胃腸炎になって体験談がなかなか書けませんでした．絶対に鳥は生で食っちゃいけません．

Since it is a popular course, I think it would normally be difficult for us to take our time and take photos by ourselves. However, thanks to the guide leading us at a comfortable pace, we were able to take photos at the scenic spots along the way (like Wilson Cedar) without being with other guests. During the trekking, the guide also took photos for us like a photographer, allowing us to walk without worrying about taking pictures, which I believe helped us reach our destination, Jomon Cedar, faster. Of course, at Jomon Cedar, we were able to enjoy and take photos freely in a place with hardly anyone around. The guide did not rush us on the way back, and we were able to fully savor the experience. We were also able to progress at our own pace on the way back, which was comfortable. The guide was knowledgeable, and the explanations along the way were enjoyable. I would definitely like to request this guide again next time.

We participated as a group of six. We left at around 5 AM and returned home after 6 PM, which turned out to be harder than expected, but the sense of accomplishment was immense!
It was a long-distance walk of 22 km, but 80% of it was on a flat cart path, after which we transitioned to a proper mountain climb.
On the day of the tour, due to the influence of a typhoon, we experienced a mix of light rain and heavy downpours, and the temperature dropped. However, I was able to enjoy the walk until the end while keeping pace with the guide and other team members!
Even in the rain, the Jomon Sugi and various other Yakusugi trees looked particularly radiant, and I feel it was a very precious experience!

The day before, I went trekking to Jomon Sugi. The next day, I went to Shiratani Unsuikyo with Mr. Tawaki. The snack we had while kayaking was "Kakaran Dango," a rich mugwort dumpling. It's a specialty from Kagoshima, but the one from Yakushima has a stronger mugwort flavor!

Due to the rain the previous day, I wasn't sure how far we could go, but I was glad we were able to see the mossy forest safely. Although it was raining at first, the sun peeked through, and the forest after the rain sparkled and was very beautiful.
Since rain was forecasted again from the afternoon, we walked quickly, but the guide pointed out the small insects, budding plants, and changes in the forest, which was enjoyable. We also encountered a hornet and a pit viper along the way, but the guide responded quickly, which was reassuring.

I was able to focus on trekking with peace of mind since I could leave all the time management to them. Above all, it was great that the guide took photos of us at the best spots, allowing us to create memories smoothly without worrying about where to take pictures. They also prepared miso soup for lunch, which helped alleviate our fatigue. I enjoyed the conversations with the other participants, and I'm glad I joined the tour!

I was quite anxious on my first trip to Yakushima, but thanks to our veteran guide, I was able to enjoy the journey to Jomon Sugi immensely. Thank you for sharing the history and the beauty of Yakushima with humor! I felt reassured as I could rely on the guide for pacing and rest stops. 🥳 I was also grateful that the guide actively took photos for us. The picture of the Wilson stump that looks like a heart 🩷 was taken from a perfect angle by the guide. 🥹 It truly became the best memory.
I've fallen in love with Yakushima! I want to go back again!!

Second visit to Yakushima. 2度目の屋久島

I quit my job and came to Yakushima for a two-month vacation. It's been over a decade since my last visit. Last time, I relied on a friend and didn't know much about Yakushima, so this time I did a bit of studying beforehand.
The first thing I can say is that taking a tour to see Jomon Sugi was definitely the right choice. The guide who accompanied us shared so much knowledge about Yakushima, which was very educational. The two women who joined us were also quite fit, so we were able to enjoy the tour without any difficulty while walking!

The guide shared various information along the way. I heard that it snows in winter as well. It went by so quickly; I think I could have gone a bit further.
