The nature of Yakushima is wonderful, and we were blessed with good weather. However, I felt that the guide who accompanied us often lacked consideration for the participants.
◆ Specific examples
- The walking pace was fast, leaving no time to put away jackets or take photos. It mostly turned into a silent walk rather than enjoying nature.
- There was a brief mention of Yakushima's history and lifestyle at the beginning, but I felt there was too much focus on the guide's self-promotion and criticism of past participants.
- I received no instruction on how to tie shoelaces, use trekking poles, or tips for climbing.
- Since the guide spoke while walking, I couldn't hear what was being said when I was at the back (fourth).
- The focus was solely on keeping up with faster participants, with no concern for those lagging behind, sometimes leading to significant distance.
- Despite the particular danger of descending, we were not waited for at all, and I was left about 20 meters behind. If someone fell behind, they were not noticed. I felt it was dangerous due to the high speed of descent.
- Because the pace was too fast and there was ample time, I requested to slow down a bit, but no consideration was given afterward. In the end, I wanted to walk at the back due to a foot injury, but I was forced to walk at the front and was hurried along.

・靴紐の結び方やストックの使い方、登り方のコツなど、登山に関する知識を全く教えてもらえなかった。
・歩きながら話すので、最後尾（4人目）にいると何を言っているか聞き取れなかった。
・ペースが速い人に合わせるばかりで、遅れている人を気にする様子がなく、見えなくなるくらい離れることもあった。
・下りは特に危険にも関わらず、全く待ってもらえず、20mくらい置いて行かれてしまった。後方で転倒しても気づいてもらえない。ハイスピードで下っていくため危険だと感じた。
・余りにもハイスピードで時間にも余裕があったため、もう少し遅くしてほしいとお願いしたが、その後も全く配慮してもらえなかった。終いには、足が負傷しているため後方で歩きたかったが、あえて先頭を歩かされ、無理矢理急かされる形になった。
・足を負傷して遅くなっている人に対して、アドバイスや励ましの言葉が一切なく、ただ離れないように注意する、遅れられると困ると言われた。
・時間に余裕があったにも関わらず、お昼休憩も15分しか取ってもらえず、お弁当を食べきれなかった。
・滞在時間として言われた時間より10分も早く出発することがあり、信用できないと感じた。
・参加者を評価するような発言も多く、競いに来たわけでもないのに不愉快だった（このチームは他と比べて速い、遅いや、参加者の体型が云々など）。
・登山開始前に準備運動がない。登山初心者も参加するため、事前に運動やガイドが欲しかった。
10時間以上を共にするガイドさんの存在は重要と思いますが、当たり外れがあるように思います。（他チームのガイドさんはペースも速すぎず、楽しそうな様子もありました）
あとは、レンタル用品の雨具が汗臭く、とても着ていられませんでした。。
・初心者の方は、備考欄に初心者であることを記載した方が良い（配慮してもらえるかどうかは不明）
・自分のペースで写真を撮ったり自然を満喫されたい方は、ガイドツアーは向かない

Yakushima is said to have 35 days of rain in a month, but on the day of our trekking, we were blessed with clear skies and could fully enjoy the great outdoors. As a couple in our late 50s who are usually not very active, we had some concerns, but thanks to the veteran guide's time management and the enjoyable conversations with the other four members of our group, we had a pleasant trekking experience without any troubles.
Looking up from the Wilson stump, we saw a heart-shaped view with a beautiful blue sky behind it. When I saw the yellow sign with the number 50, I felt an indescribable joy, and shortly after, the appearance of the Jomon Sugi was truly moving.
It was probably the day I walked the most in my life, exceeding 40,000 steps, and it turned out to be an unforgettable day. Thank you very much.
1ヶ月に35日雨が降る（？）と言われる屋久島ですが、トレッキング当日は雲一つない快晴に恵まれ大自然を全身で満喫できました。
日頃運動不足のアラ還夫婦ですので心配な面もありましたが、ベテランガイドさんの時間配分や同じグループの他4人の方の楽しいお喋りなどでトラブルなく気持ち良いトレッキングになりました。
ウィルソン株から見上げるハート型の奥にはキレイな青空がありました。50と書かれた黄色い札を見た時には何とも言えない喜びがありその直後に現れる「縄文杉」は感動ものです。
おそらく人生で一番歩いた一日で40,000歩超えでしたが忘れることの出来ない最高一日になりました。

This time, I finally hiked to Jomon Sugi. I was a bit worried about my physical stamina, but the weather was favorable in the first half, and I was able to complete the hike safely. I think it's a great challenge to try at least once in a lifetime!

As soon as I entered the sea, I encountered the sea turtles I had longed to see. Moreover, I came across three of them, along with large spiny lobsters, sea snakes, and various fish. My first snorkeling experience was amazing. The sky was clear, and it was such a HAPPY experience that it blew away the fatigue from the Jomon Sugi trekking the day before. I'm very grateful for being guided to a delicious lunch spot. Thank you very much! ^_^

The veteran guide made me, a trekking beginner, feel at ease while walking! For lunch, we were served miso soup, and it was amazing to eat lunch next to Jomon Sugi! It was a fun trekking experience while also hearing stories about Yakushima!

This was my first trip to Yakushima.
First of all, I appreciated the reminder phone calls three days before and the day before the trip, which gave me a sense of reassurance. (I thought it would be even better if email communication was also an option since I was at work.)
On the day of the trip, I had some anxiety because it was early in the morning, but the transportation was on time and comfortable. The tour itself was conducted in small groups of about seven people, which made it very pleasant.
Especially since the pace was well thought out, I believe that having a guide is essential for beginners. It was a highly satisfying tour that I would definitely recommend.
屋久島自体が初上陸の旅でした。
まず、行く3日前と前日にリマインドのお電話があり安心感がありました。（仕事中だったのでメールでの対応も可能だと、よりありがたいなと思いました）
当日は早朝だったので不安もありましたが、時間通りの送迎で快適でした。ツアー自体も個々の7人程度の小グループ行動だったのでとても過ごしやすかったです。
とくにペース配分をしっかり考えてくださったので、初心者の方はガイドさん必須だと思います。大満足のお勧めできるツアーでした。

The guide came to our accommodation on the day of the tour and took us to the site. This time, there were only two of us, my friend and me.
She was a friendly woman who introduced us to various trees and plants, including cedar, as well as birds, insects, and stones. I learned that the content of the tour varies depending on the guide, but I found it all very interesting.
She made sure to take breaks frequently, so we were able to keep up without getting exhausted. She also chatted easily with other tourists and guides we passed by, which created a great atmosphere, even though I only managed to greet them.
Additionally, I was able to ask her not only about Shiratani Unsuikyo but also about Yakushima as a whole, which was very fascinating.
As a recommendation, if you remember some places you want to check out after exploring Yakushima the day before the tour, you can ask the guide about those spots and hear interesting stories like "Actually..."

総合的にとても楽しい時間を過ごせましたし、仕事をしている時間でもなんとなく気分が軽くなっている気がしました。自然や人といった、屋久島パワーだと思います！

The heavy rain in the morning stopped, and on the way there, I encountered a family of monkeys. Walking through the forest, which sparkled beautifully after the rain, the air released from the trees was delightful, and I felt my skin rejoice in the moist atmosphere. It started to rain lightly from Shiratani Lodge, but I was able to enjoy the fantastical moss-covered forest wrapped in mist. The guide was a veteran, knowledgeable about flowers, trees, and wild birds, with extensive experience in mountains across the country. While other guiding parties passed by, he would stop each time to share various insights about plants and animals, which I found incredibly valuable. He also meticulously calculated the walking order considering the participants' stamina and pace, and since we had extra time on the way back, he even added a visit to the emerald green riverbank, which was outside the original course! I would love to request this wonderful guide again for future courses.

I had a decent level of confidence in my physical strength, but I was a bit anxious due to my age. However, I participated this time based on the reviews I read. Meeting the Jomon Sugi at the forefront was truly worth it. It became a lifelong memory. Since we were a senior team, I believe the guide's time management was the key to our success. Thank you!

It's better to have work gloves. As others have commented, they really are useful. I didn't use the portable toilet. The restroom at the break area has toilet paper.

The Jomon Sugi course is quite challenging, but with the help of an experienced guide, I was able to learn about the plants and recommended viewpoints during the trek. Even as a beginner in trekking, I quickly reached the Great Cedar. I was fortunate to have a wonderful guide and great members, making it an absolutely fantastic retreat. Thank you very much!

It was unusually clear in Yakushima, and our guide mentioned that it was the best day of the year. I had a more enjoyable round trip than I had imagined. One of my friends who was supposed to join me had a problem with their leg. They told me that since I came to Yakushima, I should go ahead, so I signed up alone. Moreover, on that day, I was the only participant in the afternoon tour of Shiratani Unsuikyo Mossy Forest. It was just me and one guide, so I had a personal guide and photographer. On March 20th, we participated in a tour led by Sasaki with a total of seven people.
I usually work in an office and am a beginner at mountain climbing, so I was worried about my stamina before the tour. However, thanks to Sasaki's pacing with breaks and lending us shoe spikes when the snow made the path slippery, we were able to reach our destination safely without any injuries.
Throughout the tour, I honestly struggled to keep up rather than fully enjoying nature, but the entire experience, including the journey itself, was valuable. Thank you very much, Sasaki.
The feeling of awe and accomplishment when looking up at Jomon Sugi was overwhelming, but I also felt more fatigued than I expected, so I highly recommend this tour that includes hotel pick-up. I would like to build my stamina and repeat this experience during the fresh green season!

The guide was a lively veteran at the age of 77. We arrived at Yakushima in the morning and participated in the half-day course in the afternoon. Trekking in light rain added a certain charm to the moss. I heard that it had been sunny until the day before, and at that time, the moss was completely dry. I actually appreciated the rainy weather.
The guide was a local who grew up in Yakushima and shared various stories with us. He brought fresh juice squeezed from "tankans" that he had planted in his garden, and as a reward for our efforts at the end, he treated us to the juice. It was sweet and delicious.

On March 22, we were blessed with wonderful weather, making it the perfect day for trekking. There were six of us in the group, and the guide was attentive and kind, considering the participants' fitness levels and adjusting the pace accordingly. Before we set off, the guide explained that considering the rain, we might only be able to go partway, and there was a possibility we might not be able to cross the second stream, but we wouldn't know until we tried. I couldn't help but think that if we had made it to Taiko Rock as planned, or at least to the mossy forest, or if it hadn't been raining, it would have been nice. However, I was satisfied with the beauty of the moss that we could see in the rain, the fear of the water, and the guide's explanations. I think it was physically demanding, but if I have the chance to go again, I would like to request the same tour with the same guide.
日程の都合で5:00出発を選びました、あいにくの雨の中まだ暗い時間の出発でしたが人も少ないためマイペースで歩けました。
出発前には雨の状況を考え途中までしか行けないかも知れないと説明があり、もしかしたらふたつ目の沢も渡れないかも知れないが行ってみないとわからないとの事でした。それでも楽しんで欲しいと言うガイドさんの親切丁寧な説明がいっぱいあり嬉しかったです。結果的にはふたつ目の沢はすでに増水していて危険との事で断念しました。
予定通り太鼓岩まで行けていたら、せめて苔むすの森まで行けていたら、雨が降ってなかったら、と思う気持ちは残りましたが雨の中だから見れた苔の美しさ、水の怖さ、ガイドさんの説明、すべてで満足出来ました。
体力的に厳しいと思いますがまた行く機会があれば同じツアーで同じガイドさんにお願いしたいと思います。

We signed up as two 21-year-old girls. I thought there would be other participants, but that day it was just the two of us and a guide, an older man in his 60s.
Right at the start of the trekking, at a waterfall, he suddenly grabbed my face firmly and made me look up. I was told to just do it without understanding why, and it turned out he wanted to take a picture of us drinking water. He was grinning and touched my face more than necessary, which made me uncomfortable, but I couldn’t say anything since I had to climb with him for three hours.
Later, he asked us to pose like a deer, and when we did, he said, "Females don’t have antlers, so you two must have a lot of male hormones." When I fell and landed on my backside, he said, "I can’t just pat your bottom, can I?" and made other creepy comments, trying to touch us.
I wanted to enjoy nature, but he kept talking about himself and bothering us unnecessarily, ruining the beautiful forest experience. When we finally reached the tour destination, he said we could stay as long as we wanted, but I just wanted to get down as quickly as possible and away from him. When I said I was done, he remarked that I still didn’t understand the beauty of the moss, saying it was a waste. If we had a different guide, it wouldn’t have been like this. It was truly the worst experience.

During the trekking, I was really uncomfortable the whole time, and what was supposed to be a fun graduation trip turned into the worst memory. トレッキング開始早々にあった滝で、顔をいきなりがっしりと掴まれて、上を向かされました。いいから！と言われ意味もわからずされるがままに上を向き、終わった時に水を飲んでいるような写真を撮るためだったとわかりました。ニヤニヤしていたし、必要以上に顔を触ってきたので気持ちが悪かったのですが3時間も一緒に登ると思うと嫌だと言えませんでした。
その後も、シカのポーズで写真を撮ろうと言われ、その通りにすると、「メスはツノが生えないんだよ、だから2人は男性ホルモンが多いんだね」と言われたり、転んで尻餅をつくと「お尻なでなでするわけにはいかないもんねぇ？」など他にも気持ち悪いことを言われたり、触られそうになりました。
また、自然を楽しみたかったのに自分の話ばかりしたり、必要以上に話しかけてきて、せっかく綺麗な森にいるのに台無しでした。ツアーの目的地に着いて、好きなだけいていいよと言われましたが、1秒でも早く下山してガイドの人と離れたかったので、もういいですと言うと、苔のよさはまだわからないかぁ、もったいないなあと言われ、ガイドがこの人ではなかったら私たちだってこんな風にならなかったのに。本当に最悪でした。
これらを直接言えたらよかったのですが、参加者か私たちだけだったのと、私たちがまだ若いので言っても流されて聞いてもらえないだろうなと諦めてしまいました。
トレッキングの最中は本当にずっとずっと嫌で、卒業旅行で楽しみにしていたのに、最悪の思い出になってしまいました。自分たちが21歳の女子だからこうなったんだろうなと思うと自分まで嫌になるね、と友達と会話をしたくらい最悪なガイドでした。星ひとつもつけたくありません。

I wanted to see Jomon Sugi at least once in my lifetime, so I signed up for a private tour with my son, making it a family trip for three. Choosing a private tour was definitely the right decision! Since it was a small group, we could hear the guide's explanations clearly even from the back, and they made sure to consider our pace as well as that of the other group, avoiding overlaps at photo spots and rest areas (especially restrooms). It felt like we were the only ones on the tour. The guide pointed out areas to be careful about along the way, and we successfully completed the 10-hour hike. I'm truly grateful to A. Being able to see the very mystical Jomon Sugi shrouded in mist became a lifelong memory.
一生に一度は縄文杉を見てみたいと、息子を巻き込んで家族3人で申し込みました。他の方に気を使うことなく自分たちのペースで行きたいと貸し切りツアーにしたのですが、これが大正解！！少人数なので後ろにいてもガイドさんの説明がよく聞こえるし、私たちのペースと他のグループの方達のペースを考えて、写真スポットや休憩場所（特にトイレ）がなるべくかち合わないように配慮してくださり、他に誰もいないんではないか、と思わせるようなツアーでした。道中気をつけるべきところは的確に指摘してくださり、無事に10時間歩ききることができました。Aさんには本当に感謝です。霧がかかったとても幻想的な縄文杉を見ることができて、一生の思い出になりました。
I recommend a private tour. Also, I suggest building up your legs, back, and stamina for walking continuously for 10 hours. I think it might be tough for those who haven't exercised at all.
ツアーは貸し切りがおすすめです。そして10時間歩き続ける足腰、体力をつけることをお勧めします。全く運動していない方にはやはり厳しいかなぁと思いました。
