It was my first solo trip to Kushiro, and since I don't have a driver's license, I was looking for a good tour to explore the area. After enjoying the view of Kushiro Wetland from the car window, I was able to visit Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo, Iouzan, and Sunayu, fully immersing myself in nature. ♡

I thought the time at each point might be short, but in reality, there was enough time to peek into souvenir shops and take a little break to enjoy some snacks. (^^)

I was able to tour with another solo traveler, which made for a very enjoyable experience. The guide also shared stories about the history and culture of each place, making it fun even for those traveling alone. ♡

We were able to see wild Ezo deer here and there, and everyone was really excited. (laughs) Thank you so much!

はじめての釧路ひとり旅でしたが、車の免許がないため、あちこち見てまわるのに良いツアーは無いか探していました。
釧路湿原を車窓から眺めた後、摩周湖、屈斜路湖、硫黄山、砂湯などをまわることができて、大自然を満喫できました♡

I wanted to see Lake Mashu at least once, so I took the trip. I had planned to go from Kushiro to Lake Mashu and then to Lake Akan by JR train or local bus, but it was difficult to transfer due to time constraints. When I departed, Kushiro was cloudy, and the bus was driving through fog. I thought I wouldn't be able to see Lake Mashu because of the fog, but luckily it cleared up quickly. It was mystical and wonderful. I also got to see Iouzan up close, and the smell of sulfur was strong. Although Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan were also cloudy, I was glad to see them up close. I would like to go again.

Due to the rain, I couldn't tell where Lake Mashu was, and while I was taking pictures of the squirrels, I had given up. Suddenly, the mist cleared, and I could see the lake and the island. After taking some photos, it quickly became hidden by the mist again. The guide's explanations were also great.

You can enjoy the view of the Kushiro Wetlands from the window of the bus, and then visit the observation deck of Lake Mashu, Iouzan in Teshikaga, Lake Kussharo, and Lake Akan. The stay at each location, except for Lake Akan, is about 20 to 30 minutes, which allows for a decent amount of sightseeing. If you want to take your time at Lake Akan, you can choose to get off the Pirika bus and take the evening local bus back to Kushiro (you can use your Pirika bus ticket for this).

However, the local bus takes about two hours to Kushiro, and there are no restroom breaks, so it might be a bit tough. The bus guide shares information about the local history and industries, as well as local songs, making the journey enjoyable. When foxes or deer appear, the bus stops for a moment to let everyone take a look.

About half of the passengers were foreigners, but there were also a few solo travelers. For those staying at Lake Akan, the bus will drop you off right in front of your hotel, and I think the Pirika bus offers a very reasonable and great tour.

Akan Lake was quite desolate, and I found myself with too much free time for two hours. Thirty minutes would have been enough... I was disappointed. It was a very cold day, and I found a somewhat nice bakery where I wanted to have something warm to drink, but I was told the coffee maker was broken and they could only serve iced drinks. The staff was also very unfriendly... I had no good impression at all.

The other lakes were also desolate, which was disappointing.

On the bus, the tour guide kept talking non-stop, and the volume was loud and just annoying.

Such a disappointment.

Tsurumidai, the beautifully frozen and snow-covered Lake Mashu on a sunny day, the swans at Lake Kussharo, and the impressive Mount Iou were all highlights. I was very satisfied. The pork bowl for lunch was also delicious. I got off at Lake Akan, and both the guide and the driver were kind and made it a fun experience.

Mr. Ishida was prompt picking us up at curbside at 0900. {He was actually early} The drive was out to a rural part of Kushiro to various crane sanctuaries. The view at each of these places was outstanding. Mr. Ishida explained about the cranes & their revival from the brink of extinction. He had setup an itinerary but was not bound to it. We bypassed one sight, since we had seen it on a previous visit to Kushiro. With this change brought some spare time, so he took us around the seaport & made several stops at scenic points for photographs.

It was a memorable experience. Definitely a highlight in our trip to Hokkaido.

A disappointing experience. A taxi ride not a tour

I appreciate that you made it clear that the driver would not be able to speak English and he did try to use an app - but it was so dangerous as he tried to drive and look at his phone that we agreed that he would not do that.

So really what I got was a taxi ride not a private tour.

If the driver had any expertise about Kushiro's nature, he was not able to share it with me.

The first place we visited was basically a bridge with a view over a river, with a few cranes on the horizon.

I understand that this bridge is a famous viewing point. You could say that there are no guarantees where nature is concerned but judging by the fact that there were only two other people there, then I believe that this fact was knowable in advance and we should have gone somewhere else.

The second was a feeding station which did at least afford a view of a number of cranes. Here there were many other people viewing them too, even coaches (proving that - see above - it is possible to know where to go - and where not to)

However, I discovered after my visit, that there are set times for feeding the cranes, so surely I should have been advised about this and my arrival timed to coincide with the feeding.

There would have been much more activity, as birds arrived for the food ...

The third stop was at an observatory which was not very inspiring. And again there was hardly anyone there.

Apparently the roof viewpoint it a highlight but I guess that is in the summer months. In winter it was simply a barren landscape.

I travelled to Kushiro especially to see the cranes. All in all, a disappointing experience.

p.s. The taxi driver himself was courteous and I felt he was a very nice man, so this is NOT a complaint about him. The tour organisers should have put more thought into it - to justify calling it a tour.

What a great tour! My tour guide was waiting for me with a sign when I got off the plane (which was delayed about 20 minutes). We went to the crane center where I could photograph the endangered Tancho, red-cranes cranes, and visit the center. My guide Inoue-San, was so professional, patient and an excellent driver on the snowy mountain roads. We visited Lake Akan, the beautiful caldera Lake Mashu and also Lake Kussharo, with wintering wild Whooper Swans along the shore. We also stopped to see steaming sulfur springs coming out of the bottom of a mountain, another wild crane viewing spot and the overlook of Kushiro Marsh. I was so happy I booked this tour, seeing the Tancho fulfilled a Bucket List item for me and the beautiful lakes and wild swans were icing on the cake. Thank you for such wonderful memories!

Great tour to Kushiro area red crane observation points. We are not avid birders...just wanted to see the cranes close up. We were not disappointed. Visited 3 major sites where cranes congregated in January. Took in other sites on history, geology, ecology etc of the area. The weather cooperated for us, beautiful sunny day even if a bit cold, but it was mid January. Partner spoke some Japanese so it was helpful but our driver had a translator device which was also helpful. Great tour, lots of cranes...hundreds of them at each site...yes, really! Well worth the time and cost, and private taxi so much better than a big bus...a big bus wouldn't be able to get to some of the areas. Taxi is best way to go.

I was able to efficiently tour the lake and was very satisfied. I feel that it wouldn't be possible to do this in a rental car in terms of time. There were many cranes, and the view of Lake Mashu was excellent. Finally, I was able to get off at the airport, and I truly appreciate all the help.

The view of the larch trees changing color from the train window, a family of red-crowned cranes searching for food in a vast field, and three cranes that seemed to be getting along right by the road were truly captivating. I was thrilled to see my first red-crowned cranes. I appreciated the driver's consideration for the animals, as he slowed down to avoid startling the cranes. I was able to see 14 red-crowned cranes and 4 deer, which made my heart feel youthful again.

When we departed in the morning, the temperature was indeed low, so I put on a jacket, but as the bus moved along, both the temperature and my spirits warmed up. The bus guide's memorable explanations of historical sites and the wonders of nature made for a fun and homely sightseeing experience on the bus.

車窓からの落葉松紅葉、広大な畑で餌を探す丹頂鶴の親子、そのような鶴が道路のすぐそばに、仲が良さそうに３羽の鶴いました。初丹頂で感激しました。運転手さんも丹頂鶴が驚かないようにスピードを減速するなど動物への配慮が嬉しかった。丹頂鶴14羽、鹿も4頭も見ることができて心は少年に戻っていました。
朝出発の時は、さすがに気温が低く上着を羽織りましたが、バスが進むにつれて気温も心も温かくなってきました。
バスガイドさんの心に残る旧跡説明、大自然の営み等　話を交えた楽しいバス車内でアットホームな楽しい観光でした。

Akan Lake had a two-hour free time, so it was necessary to move efficiently. We were able to reserve a motorboat in advance for a private use. We could take our time to thoroughly explore the Marimo Center. It was great that we could fully enjoy Akan Lake. Although it was pouring rain at Lake Mashu, it cleared up afterward. It turned out to be a fulfilling sightseeing experience.

I traveled during a time when disasters occurred both in Hokkaido and nationwide.

I originally wanted to go to Lake Mashu and researched various train and bus schedules, but considering the frequency, connections, and duration of stay, I decided to take this bus. It was a great decision! I had given up hope of seeing the "Misty Lake Mashu" due to the weather, but miraculously, the rain stopped by the time we arrived, and I was able to see the long-awaited Lake Mashu.

This alone made me satisfied, but I also experienced the unique smells and scenery of Iouzan, Sunayu, and Lake Akan, which you can only appreciate by visiting the area.

The view from the bus, while listening to explanations, and being able to visit a tourist spot that isn't particularly well-connected without getting tired is truly appreciated for solo travelers. I highly recommend it for those who do not have a rental car.

However, there were also international travelers on the bus that day. There were two new bus guides, but I felt there was no English announcement on board. It might just be that I didn't hear it, but I hope there will be some kind of support in the future.

もともと摩周湖に行きたくて電車やバスの時間を色々と調べたのですが本数や接続、滞在時間を考えこちらのバスに乗車しました。
乗車して大正解！
天候でで「霧の摩周湖」になるだろうと諦めていましたが奇跡的に到着時には雨が上がり、念願の摩周湖に出会えました。
これだけで私的には満足だったのですが、その後訪れた硫黄山や砂湯、阿寒湖は現地に伺ないと分からない匂いや景色が体験できました。

説明を聞きつつバスの高さから見る景色、何より疲れずに交通の便が決して良いとは言えない観光地へ行けるのは、一人旅には本当に有難いです。
レンタカーでない方にはおすすめします。

ただ当日は海外の方も乗車されていました。
新人のバスガイドさんがお二人いらっしゃいましたが、英語でのアナウンスは車内では無かったように思います。
私が見聞きしていなかっただけかもしれませんが、何らかの対応があれば良いなと思いました。

短い時間に摩周湖・屈斜路湖・阿寒湖の観光ポイントを周り、各ポイントでは降車し景色を楽しんだり、お土産屋さんでおやつを食べたり買い物を楽しむことができました。車内では各ポイントの説明や北海道の歴史に至るまでのお話をしていただき飽きなく楽しむことができました。女性一人でも安全に充分に楽しめ、トイレもポイントごとに利用できるので心配なく過ごせました。
阿寒湖ではホテルの前に停車していただけたのでとても便利でした。
帰りの阿寒湖から空港までのコースもぜひ作って欲しいと思いました。

I had planned to travel around Hokkaido by train, but I really wanted to see Lake Mashu and also stay at Akanko Onsen, so I utilized this option.

On the last day of my trip to Eastern Hokkaido, I participated in the winter course. It covers all the classic tourist spots in Eastern Hokkaido. It's very helpful that you can choose your final drop-off location, such as the Akan Lake Hotel or Kushiro Airport.

Many of the tourist spots in Eastern Hokkaido can only be accessed by car, so I highly recommend it for solo travelers or those who don't usually drive! There were many foreign tourists and female solo participants, so I felt comfortable joining. The guide was very polite and provided detailed information, making the long bus rides typical of Hokkaido completely enjoyable. The driver was also very accommodating; when we spotted wildlife along the way, he slowed down a bit to allow us to take photos from the car. It seems that the summer course has slightly different content, so I definitely want to participate in that next time.

道東旅行の最終日で冬コースに参加しました。道東の王道観光地を全て網羅した内容となっています。最終の送迎先に阿寒湖畔ホテルや釧路空港を選択できる点がとても助かりますね。
道東の観光地は車でしか行けない場所が多いので、一人旅の方や普段車の運転をしない方等にはとてもオススメです！外国人旅行者や女性一人での参加者も多く、気兼ねなく参加できました。ガイドさんはとても丁寧且つ案内は詳細で、北海道特有の長いバス移動でも全く退屈しませんでした。ドライバーさんもとても協力的で、道中で野生動物等か現れると少し速度を落としてくれ、車内から写真を撮らせてくれました。夏コースは若干コース内容が変わるようなので、ぜひ次回はこちらに参加したいと思います。

Well worth the trip

We flew from Sapporo to Kushiro where we were met by the taxi driver. The driver did not speak English but he used an app on his phone that allowed us to communicate when we needed. The story of the cranes and how they have come back from almost extinction is amazing. We started at the interpretive center and then traveled to see several locations of the Cranes and a lunch stop. A five hour tour and then we flew back to Sapporo to take in the Snow Festival. A most worthwhile experience. There were two couples.

Language barrier wasn’t a problem. Our guide was early, had a sign, and then took us all over and we saw lots of cranes. Very much worth it!

There were about 21 passengers on the day of participation, but I was surprised to be the only Japanese person. The guide used creatively designed boards written in multiple languages and departure time boards for explanations, so everything went smoothly without any issues. The winter scenery at Lake Mashu was cold, but it was a wonderful view with the pure white mountains and deep blue lake. It was very convenient to travel from Kushiro to Akan Lake Onsen while sightseeing.

参加日は２１人位の乗客でしたが、日本人は自分一人でびっくりしました。
ガイドさんが工夫をして多国語で書いたボードや出発時間のボードなどを使って説明していたのでスムーズで問題ありませんでした。
冬の摩周湖は寒いですが真白な山と濃いブルーの湖で素晴らしい景色でした。
釧路から阿寒湖温泉まで観光しながら移動ができてとても便利でした。
