My friend and I had a nerikiri experience at 10:30 in the morning. Perhaps because it was early, there were only the two of us as customers. As a result, we received almost one-on-one instruction, which was great! Thanks to that, we were able to create very beautiful pieces.
When there are many participants, it's easy for the instructors to overlook each individual, so if you prefer a smaller group or a more relaxed experience, it might be a good idea to book a morning session.

I participated in a traditional Japanese sweets making class as a memento of my trip to Kyoto. They carefully taught us the necessary tools, names, and methods for making wagashi. It was a lot of fun to create seasonal wagashi. It was also my first experience with the tea ceremony, and the explanations about the tea leaves, the stone mill, the water temperature, and the proper way to enjoy matcha were clear and thorough! Finally, I enjoyed the matcha and sweets, and they were delicious.

The COVID-19 infection control measures were sufficiently implemented (ventilation, disinfection, social distancing, etc.), so I felt safe participating.
I was glad to finally experience "wagashi making," which I had been interested in for a long time. The room in the building lacks any soft decorations or ornaments, so the atmosphere is not great. Foreigners would probably appreciate a more abundant display of Japanese style in various places. The male teacher's friendliness was a saving grace, though.

We used this experience as a family of four with my parents. I thought it would be easy, like working with clay, but it turned out to be quite challenging, and even the adults were engrossed in the activity. Since we wanted to take our time eating, we requested a takeout pack and enjoyed it at the hotel. The red bean paste used was very delicious, and although the appearance of our creations wasn't great, we enjoyed them. The kids had fun, and my parents, who are over sixty, said it was their first experience like this and they had a great time. Compared to other wagashi-making experiences, this one was reasonably priced. While it seemed like making just two pieces was a bit few, the high difficulty level made two pieces just right. However, I wish we could have changed our gloves at least once.

I participated with an 8-year-old and an adult. As the title suggests, it was not too easy and not too difficult, allowing both adults and children to enjoy it. I had a wonderful experience making nerikiri with two friends!
ใGeneral Flowใ
1. Arrived at the venue about 5 minutes before the experience started.
2. Provided the name used for the reservation and waited for the venue to open.
3. Had my temperature checked and took off my shoes to enter the store.
4. Sat at the designated seat and waited for the experience to begin.
5. Put on gloves and started making nerikiri.
6. Finished the nerikiri making experience.
7. Was asked whether I wanted to take home the completed nerikiri or eat it on the spot (we chose to eat it there).
8. Ordered tea from the drink menu and enjoyed it with the nerikiri.
9. Paid only for the tea and left the store.
ใThings to Know Before You Goใ
- Since this is a food establishment, please do not take out any food or drinks you brought with you.
- If you get thirsty, you can order drinks from the menu located on the back of the sample photo on the table!
- The restroom is located to the right behind the purple curtain at the front of the store.
- During the process, quite a bit of fine anko fell on my lap (this may vary by person). Itโs a good idea to place a handkerchief on your lap at the start of the experience.
- Your hands will get sticky while making, so it might be difficult to handle your smartphone or camera, but the staff will take photos for you. Itโs smoother if you take out your smartphone or camera on the table before your hands get sticky.
ใThoughts on the Experienceใ
Since it was December and close to Christmas, we made a Christmas tree and peony nerikiri!
The sample photos were placed in a clear file, so I knew what we would be making as soon as I sat down. I thought the peony would be more difficult, but the tree turned out to be much harder, haha.
The peony was easier to make using a triangular stick (the wooden stick next to the ladle in the photo) and chopsticks, giving me a strong sense of "I'm making wagashi," and it was not too difficult, so I enjoyed making itโจ.
For the tree, we pushed anko out through a small hole in the ladle to sprinkle it over the core black anko. This was quite challenging. The anko wouldnโt stick well to the black anko, and even when I pressed it down with my fingers, it didnโt go as plannedโฆ This was true for both the leaf and decorative parts, which were also difficult to attach.
Even though I was wearing gloves, my hands got sticky, so I couldnโt touch my smartphone. I thought about taking a photo, but the staff kindly took pictures for me! They announced, "If you would like a photo taken, please place your smartphone on the table. The staff will assist you!" It might be easier to have your smartphone out from the beginning to avoid having to take off your gloves and search for it in your bag later.
It was more challenging than I imagined, and after concentrating on making, I ended up with very stiff shoulders when we finished! Even though I was sitting the whole time, I felt like I had exercised, haha. Plus, there was a great sense of accomplishment when we finished!
After the experience, we could eat the nerikiri on the spot, so I ordered warm green tea, which was absolutely delightful! The sense of achievement from completing the nerikiri combined with the fatigue from concentrating made it very satisfying.
While we were eating, it seemed that there was also a tea ceremony experience happening in a nearby area. A few people transitioned from the nerikiri making experience to the tea ceremony. I could hear discussions about matcha, which piqued my interest! It seemed like there was a lovely aroma of matcha being ground with a stone mill (though I couldnโt smell it from where I was).

Unfortunately, I ended up participating just as a typhoon was approaching. I was a little late for the shuttle bus meeting time, but when I contacted them, they were very kind and waited for me, which was a great help. Fortunately, the rain wasn't too strong, just light, so we had our meal at a semi-indoor table facing the river. I chose the bamboo course, and when I saw the photos, I wondered if it would be enough. I participated this time at the request of my two children, a toddler and an elementary school student. I ended up focusing on the younger one and couldn't pay much attention to the older one, but the staff was attentive and both of them managed to complete their projects despite some struggles. I made a last-minute reservation the day before, but I was able to fully enjoy the experience. I participated with my daughter. Since there were three groups including us, we were able to ask questions comfortably, and the instructor was a bright and lively person, making everything very clear.

Since we came all the way to Kyoto, I wanted to do something uniquely Japanese rather than just sightseeing, so I participated with my elementary school daughter. Making two types of nerikiri wagashi was like working with clay; the process of kneading, coloring, piping, and shaping was enjoyable and easy enough for my young daughter to do on her own. Adults can also enjoy this hands-on activity after a long time. Afterward, we were able to eat the freshly made wagashi we created, which was very satisfying. The instructor demonstrated right in front of us, and there were samples on each table, making it easy to compare and create alongside the examples, which was great.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to experience this activity with peace of mind, thanks to the disinfection of tools, tables, and chairs, as well as the spaced-out seating arrangements. The wagashi (Japanese sweets) change with the seasons, and this time we made cherry blossom and dandelion sweets. Both looked simple to make, but once we tried, we truly felt the skill of the wagashi artisans. However, even though our creations were a bit clumsy, the wagashi we made felt incredibly endearing! After making the wagashi, we had a tea ceremony experience. We were first taught how to prepare the matcha, and even as beginners, we were able to whisk it smoothly. Finally, we enjoyed the matcha along with the wagashi. They used high-quality anko (sweet red bean paste) and matcha, and with my eyes closed, it tasted just like what you would find in a shop. There were no overly complicated steps, and we got to enjoy delicious treats, making it an experience that can be enjoyed by everyone, including small children, regardless of age! I participated with a friend! The explanation of making wagashi was very clear and smooth, and whenever we had questions, the staff members waiting nearby kindly provided individual explanations and checked in on us, which was very thoughtful. At the request of my daughter, I had the opportunity to experience making traditional Japanese sweets with my 81-year-old mother and my 23-year-old daughter, spanning three generations. Making wagashi was more challenging than I expected, but it was a lot of fun. I struggled with shaping them, but I enjoyed the process while redoing it multiple times. However, I did wonder if cosmos flowers are really considered autumn flowers, aside from the cherry blossoms.
We enjoyed the wagashi we made with matcha that was sold separately. If I had to say something, I was a bit disappointed that the matcha was a little bitter. The sweets were said to be delicious, used even by wagashi shops in Kyoto, so it was a shame given how tasty the red bean paste was.

I participated with my boyfriend! I had seen reviews mentioning it was fast-paced and hectic, but I didn't find the speed to be an issue during the experience! I also had a matcha experience, where there was an explanation of the proper techniques, and I was able to enjoy the wagashi I made along with the matcha deliciously ^_^.
Perhaps due to the COVID period, we were able to participate with a relatively small group, and since we were the only ones for the matcha experience, we could enjoy our meal and take photos at a leisurely pace. The explanation of making wagashi was very easy to understand, and I was able to create them smoothly. Making wagashi was an interesting experience.
The tea ceremony and wagashi making were scheduled for one hour, and since there was another reservation, speed was really required, which made it feel different from a leisurely enjoyment. I couldn't enter until just before the start time, but since I arrived early, I was exploring nearby. However, I think the schedule for wagashi making is really tight, as they would call if you were even one minute late.
However, for those who want to pack their day with activities and enjoy Kyoto, this might be a great option for a speedy experience.

I live in Kyoto, and I have always wanted to experience making wagashi (Japanese sweets). I found out that I could do this at an affordable price here, so I signed up with my daughter. The park is closed, and with more time spent at home due to restrictions, I've been doing quite a bit of baking. However, making wagashi (Japanese sweets) is quite challenging due to the high barriers to entry and the difficulty in gathering the necessary ingredients. After making mochi for New Year's, I was on the lookout for something to satisfy my craving for anko (sweet red bean paste) and came across a place. Most options were geared towards adults, but I found out that An-san welcomes young children, so I decided to visit.
Just to be safe, I practiced rolling with clay before heading out. It seemed that even with child-sized gloves, rolling was difficult. Comparing our creations to the samples of uguisu and plum kinton, we ended up with some odd shapes, but it was a lot of fun, and my child wrote in their picture diary that it was a great day.

I think it's fine if you're just looking to experience making wagashi. However, if your goal is to "enjoy" the experience, I would recommend looking for other places. The explanations and tasks were quite rushed, and while those who are good at following instructions might manage to keep up, those who are a bit clumsy will likely struggle. Since this was during a less busy time after the Go To campaign ended, I can only imagine it would be even more chaotic during the tourist season, so I can't really recommend it.
On the other hand, for those who want to have a quick 30-minute experience and don't have much time, it's conveniently located close to the station.

During the pandemic, the measures were well implemented. However, the pace was fast and it was quite challenging. I think it would be better if there was a time allocation to proceed a bit more slowly. The staff have to finish within the time limit, so I don't think there's much they can do about it.
Making simple wagashi (Japanese sweets) myself made me realize how difficult it is to shape them nicely. So, I wasn't able to do it very well!
