This is a classroom located just behind Heian Shrine, in the Craft Center. I arrived in the early afternoon and had a lunch bento (a Kyoto-style, charming lunch) at the café on the first floor, which was being offered by the hall. The class started at 2:30 PM, and when I went to the venue on the third floor, I was the only participant. First, the instructor handed me two scent bags (large and small). Then, I learned about the history of scent bags and directly smelled three types of incense chips, which I mixed in my preferred ratio to create my own scent in the larger bag. The smaller bag was made with a different ratio than the larger one. Both bags turned out to be pleasantly strong scent bags. The entire process took about 40 minutes. On my way home, I placed the scent bags in a plastic bag, but even so, the fragrance wafted around my bag.

丁度平安神宮の裏手にある、クラフトセンターにある教室です。昼過ぎに到着したので、会館の喫茶が売り出しているランチ弁当（京風であり趣のあるランチです）を一階の喫茶にて食べた。教室の開始は14時30分、3階の会場へ行くと、参加者は私一人のみであった。最初に先生より、二個の匂い袋（大小）をわたされた。次いで匂い袋の歴史などを教えてもらい、直接三種の香チップを嗅いで、大きめの匂い袋に好きな割合で入れて自分好みを作った。小さめの匂い袋には大きめとは違う割合で作る。いずれの袋も心地よい、凄い強めの匂い袋が完成した。これまでの時間は40分程度であった。帰路、匂い袋をビニール袋に入れて移動したが、それでも鞄の中より香が付近に漂っていた。

I had a draft, so I was able to add color without struggling with the layout. Since the base was white, it was very difficult to control the amount of water when layering colors. Mixing paint on the palette takes time and requires moisture, so the colors tend to become lighter. I thought that using a tube type that dispenses a little at a time would save time. I was able to concentrate, so the time felt shorter. Thank you very much.

Aside from making and poking holes in your paper, you are involved in every step, including designing, tracing and cutting the stencil you use for the cover art. More than worth the price, and the souvenir you take with you is definitely meaningful.

This workshop was my first experience in weaving.
I made a Shikainamihana basket and it wasn’t difficult.
The host had a good level in English and was patient in showing and explaining all the steps.
It didn’t even take too long to make ! It took about an hour.
This workshop is fine for beginners and totally ok if you speak English!
I recommend going to the Take No Ko shop for the appointement

My wife and I had chosen different products to make. Mine was a bit more difficult (ebikago) while my wife's (yorozukago) was simpler and took 30 minutes less to complete. My wife was pleased with the product

The reservation was at 2 PM, but it seems the meeting time was at 1 PM, and I completely missed it, so I apologize. Please be careful when making reservations, everyone.

The experience was after the Obon holiday, and since there was only one other person participating, it was quite empty, allowing for thorough instruction. The finished product was shiny with gold leaf and mother-of-pearl. If you want to create something more original, it's good to bring your own design. However, fine lines and intricate designs are not feasible. The mother-of-pearl is very thin and fragile, so that's not really an option (laughs).

Also, even though the line for applying the gold leaf is done with a fine brush, I think it's difficult for amateurs to draw thin lines. Please take your time and be generous with your design and timing when you give it a try.

予約は14時だったんですが、集合時間が13時だったみたいで全く気付かず申し訳なかったです。予約の際は皆さんご注意を。
体験はお盆明けで、一人参加が他に一人居ただけで空いていたため、丁寧に教えて頂きました。金粉と螺鈿でピカピカに仕上がりました。よりオリジナルが作りたい方は自分で絵を持っていくとイイですよ。ただし細い線や細かい絵は無理です。螺鈿がとても薄くて割れやすいのでそれどころではありません（笑
また金粉を付ける線も細筆とは言え、素人が細く描くのは難しいと思います。
時間とデザインにはゆとりを持って挑戦してみてください。

My sister, an American basket weaver with a great deal of experience in weaving other materials, and I, a long-term resident of Japan with no previous experience, took the course. We were the only two students that day and both had a great time. The young woman who instructed us was friendly and patient with us, taking us one step at a time through the process of making the rather complex but beautiful Shikainami basket. We both ended up with nice-looking baskets. The instructor cheerfully answered my sister's questions about preparing the bamboo and agreed to prepare 200 strips for my sister to take home with her a week later. All-in-all, a very satisfying experience well worth the price.

Husband and I did the chinkin class and the gold leaf stamping class at kyoto artisan workshop and we have to say that we enjoyed the chinkin class better as it was more hands on. For the gold leaf stamping class, we did the cutting of the template but the actual gold leaf application was done by the teacher (our teacher that day was Mr Fuji). This is probably due to the fact that gold leaf wrinkles at the slightest touch and it was probably too difficult for beginners to handle. A tip for those choosing this class - choose a design that is not too fine for a better effect. I chose a crane design and the long thin legs of the crane did not stick well.

I did a raden class at sagaraden nomura and a makie class at innui shikki and I have to say that my husband and I both enjoyed the chinkin class at kyoto artisan workshop best of all. The teachers were elderly and speak Japanese only but we had no problems following through the teacher's demonstration. What sets kyoto artisan workshop apart was the incredibly hands on experience from the woodcutting to the application of lacquer and metallic powders, unlike the other workshops that we've been to where some steps were done for us by more expert hands so that we would have a nice product to take home. As a result we learnt a lot. Highly recommend this class.

It was nice to prepare, cut and adjust the paper to make the fan.We also had the oportunity to see the staff crafting the fans. We were very well welcomed in a nice atmosphere. The fans they are making there are bsolutely beautiful and delicate.

The staff here are so nice. They served me right away, even though I came very early. They like to explain a lot about Japanese history and culture. The book binding is organised to be quick and easy to do, so that both kids and adults can enjoy it. I only wish I could have learned more about the process! If only I knew more Japanese language!
What really impressed me, however, is that they built some katagami, or traditional artisan stencilling, often done on silk. Kozaka San and Monoba San really are great to chat with as well, and well tolerate poor Japanese language skills. :)

My partner and I are fairly experienced in painting and wanted to learn the traditional Japanese way of painting. It was in between using gouche and watercolour. Our teacher was very kind and it was set in a quieter part of town in a home business. There were lots of beautiful art done by our teacher around. It was nice to meet another artist. The illustrations were already drawn for us to paint with very Japanese style designs, there were many to choose from and all were gorgeous. We had a really nice time. Some afternoon tea was provided and a sweet potato :)

Recently, I've had more opportunities to lightly touch upon the tea ceremony, and I came across this experience menu, so I quickly signed up. On the day of the event, I was lucky enough to be the only participant. I had a one-on-one session with a supportive and skillful instructor for over two hours of "tea scoop and me" time.

There were various types of bamboo materials, including those with sesame-like patterns and soot bamboo, and it was really enjoyable to choose while admiring the naturally formed patterns.

Once I started carving, things didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. I faced continuous challenges, such as carving unevenly and panicking when I over-carved certain areas while trying to fix them. However, by quietly persevering and doing it myself, it felt like a mini life experience, almost meditative, and I really got into it.

When I finished, I became more forgiving of the slight distortions that had bothered me before, and I developed a much greater affection for my tea scoop than the one I bought on Amazon. Now, I use my tea scoop to prepare my tea every morning.

Next time I go to Kyoto, I want to try making one with a different type of bamboo!

I also bought a tube to store the tea scoop, so I plan to enjoy making one each time and labeling it in my own way.

P.S. There are also the Rakubijutsukan and Seimei Shrine nearby, making it a nice location for a sightseeing plan.

最近、かる～く茶道に触れる機会が増え、ちょうどこの体験メニューに出会ったので、早速申込みました。当日はラッキーにも参加者は私ひとり。励まし＋ガイダンス上手なお姉さんと一対一で、2時間強「茶杓＆私」タイム。

素材の竹には、ゴマ状の模様があるものとか、煤竹とか色々あり、それ以外にも自然に出来たの模様を眺めながら、選択するのがとても楽しかったです。

そして削り始めてからは、なかなか思う通りには行かず、デコボコに削れて修正しようとするあまり、削りすぎの部分が出てきて慌てたりと、難しいチャレンジの連続でしたが、黙々とただひたすら自分でやり通すことで、ある意味プチ人生体験のような感じで、瞑想ちっくで、かなり入り込みました♪

出来てみると、それまで気になっていた多少の歪みにも寛容になってｗ、アマゾンで買った茶杓よりも俄然愛着が沸き、毎朝朝一番に頂くお茶もマイ茶杓でたてています。

次回京都へ行く際も、今度は別の竹で作ってみたいです！！

今回茶杓を入れる筒も買い求めたので、毎回、作っては、銘をつけて自分なりにエンジョイしようと思っています。

追記：すぐ近くに楽美術館や、清明神社があるので、観光プランの動線的にもナイスな立地です。

Since the effects last about a year, I'm happy that I can use it for a long time. Shopping on the lower floor was also fun, and I ended up buying some incense as well. This experience was part of one of our best days in Kyoto! We greatly enjoyed experiencing this craft, this art. For us the fun went beyond just learning. It is a beautiful place to work, the staff were very helpful and well prepared. There was a slight language barrier as we speak little Japanese and the staff speaks little English. That barrier is really minor because the staff walk you through each step and are working next to you, ready to help as much or as little as you need. Plus, modern technology / translators help, too. We also had the added benefit of two Japanese women going through the experience with us; this made the day even better. Overall, it was a wonderful experience! If I ever get the chance to go back to Kyoto, this will definitely be on the top of my list of things to do. We highly recommend this to anyone interested and especially for crafty people.

I have been buying bamboo baskets on my visits to Japan. Making my own basket is my favorite souvenir for this trip to Kyoto. The instructions were easy to follow and the end product was exactly as shown in the picture! The only tricky part was finding the store.
