I was drawn in by the beautiful colors in the sample photos and decided to sign up for the experience. Carving thin lines was quite challenging in terms of applying the right amount of pressure, but I had a great time chatting with my friends while doing it. I struggled a bit with the gradation technique for the gold inlay, but it turned out surprisingly beautiful, and I ended up with a wonderful memory and souvenir!

I never thought I could make my own tea scoop. There were times when I struggled along the way, and I received help with the final touches, but it turned out beautifully. By making it myself, my perspective on tea scoops has changed. I'm looking forward to seeing it during tea ceremonies and gatherings. I want to make another one as well.

I am very satisfied.

Reviewed by: みんみ

I arrived by car, so it took about a 3-minute walk from a nearby coin parking to reach this charming town-style shop. The entrance was decorated with many tsumami zaiku (traditional Japanese fabric flower art), which heightened my expectations.

After taking off my shoes at the genkan (entrance area), I found a dining table, and at the back, there was a tatami room with a chabudai (low table) experience corner. When I visited, there were already about seven people experiencing it, and it was quite popular.

You can choose from several options for the flower part and the hairpin, which slightly affects the price. Since it was my first time, I opted for a relatively simple design and chose a brooch type. The small chirimen (crepe fabric) was so delightful to look at that I really had a hard time deciding. I felt there were a bit fewer patterned fabrics, but I managed to choose and started the experience at the table.

It was crowded, so the instructor seemed quite busy moving around, but she paid attention to each person and even made adjustments where needed, resulting in a lovely piece. It might sound exaggerated, but I was very satisfied with the cute item, which was even better than what you can find for sale around there. (I made it with fabric that I liked, haha.)

I had such a fun and satisfying experience that I immediately made a reservation for my next visit.

The experience itself was very good. However, I felt somewhat neglected, and I would have appreciated advice on how to choose patterns to make them look beautiful, or when to sprinkle the gold powder. The craftsman who followed up with us later was excellent. Perhaps they were a young staff member, as they were on the phone in the back the whole time.

If you're going to Kyoto, you definitely want to have a traditional experience! I found this place and decided to join. There were various options, but I chose the course where you transfer mother-of-pearl onto a round plate because it looked shiny and beautiful.

Since I decided to participate at the last minute, I didn't think about the design beforehand, but I found a pattern I liked, cut out the mother-of-pearl, and worked on beautifully outlining the edges. It surprisingly took a lot of time, and the two and a half hours flew by. I was a bit rushed afterward because I had plans, so there were some rough parts, but it turned out to be a lovely souvenir.

I learned that they could accommodate designs I brought in, so I wish I had thought it through more. The instructors were very kind, so if you enjoy handmade crafts and tradition, I definitely recommend participating!

It was my first time making a hairpin, and I was a bit anxious, but the staff were very kind and guided me well, allowing me to complete it. I aimed for a Taisho Roman style, carefully selecting the fabric and paying attention to the colors and arrangement, which made the process very enjoyable. I was reminded of how wonderful handmade items are! I ended up with a hairpin that matched my vision, and it was a fulfilling hour. I was also able to purchase some parts, so when I get home, I’ll make an original hairpin with leftover fabric.

Reviewed by: ロッコ

First of all, I appreciated the polite guidance I received via email the day before; it was very helpful. Not only did it specify which bus to take from the station, but it also explained what to do after getting off at the bus stop. I had already checked it on Google Maps beforehand, but the instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

At the beginning, I chose a postcard with a sketch on it and painted over it. Besides the Wind God and Thunder God, there were also animals and flowers available, but my friend and I decided to go with the Wind God and Thunder God. There are coloring models available, but you can choose your own colors, and you also receive advice, so even though I wasn't very confident in my skills, I think I managed to create something decent.

Before starting, I thought it would be quick since the size was postcard-sized, but waiting for the paint to dry and thinking about what colors to use turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. During the session, they also served us tea. Before I knew it, two hours had passed. At the end, they framed the painting for us, and that was the conclusion of the experience.

While I primarily visit Kyoto for sightseeing, as I get older, a full day of sightseeing has become tiring, so it seems that incorporating experiences like this one, followed by visiting two or three places, will become my new pattern. It was a good stimulation for my aging brain as well.

I went on a monitor tour of the Nihonga Experience Studio Emaki.

I got off at the bus stop near Jodo-ji and clicked on "Japanese Painting Experience - Emaki" that I had saved in my smartphone schedule to check the map on Google Maps. To my surprise, it showed up inside Higashiyama Jisho-ji... After walking for a while, I felt something was off, so I checked the official website for the meeting place map and corrected my direction. However, the location indicated on the map was a liquor store... Just when I was starting to feel lost, I noticed a space that seemed to fit the description in a corner of the liquor store. It would be helpful if there was a banner or something to make it clearer. If you go directly, it's only a 2-3 minute walk from the bus stop.

Once seated, we greeted each other. In front of me was a paint box containing 30-40 colors of solid paint for Japanese painting, along with two brushes, water, a towel (for moisture control), a palette, and a file with postcards that had outlines drawn on them. I chose what I wanted to paint from that file. There were completed pieces available for reference, so I could choose based on those. I selected "Raijin" from the Wind God and Thunder God series, which required detailed coloring, while my partner chose "Iris." In the end, the larger designs were more challenging because they required techniques for shading and blending, but I felt I could experience some of the techniques of Japanese painting. Finally, we sprinkled gold leaf, added a Japanese painting-like touch, let it dry, and framed it to complete the piece. I thought I had done it smoothly, but it ended up taking about an hour and twenty minutes.

If you actively ask questions, they will teach you various techniques of Japanese painting, so I think it's good to proceed while asking. They also served us tea.

Thank you for visiting us the other day.

It seems you had quite a difficult time finding us due to Google Maps mistakenly confusing Jodo-ji and Jodo-in. I sincerely apologize for the confusion, especially since we do not have any banners or large signs at our store.

Our shop is located in a corner of a sake store, and while we have paintings displayed in the showcase and a noren featuring the Wind God and Thunder God at the entrance, it appears that it was hard to identify unless you were right in front of it.

We would like to utilize your valuable experience for our future improvements. We are currently in the process of creating a hanging sign to make our presence more noticeable.

We hope that those who participate in the Japanese painting experience can enjoy even a glimpse of its essence within the small postcard. Thank you for your valuable feedback and comments.

Hairpin-making experience

Reviewed by: 林 麻美

To get to the Kyoto Tsumami Zaiku Experience Center, you can take a bus and arrive very close by. The location is not complicated, so you can easily find it by looking at a map.

I arrived early, and they warmly welcomed me and allowed me to come inside. Once inside, I was captivated by the various patterned hairpins displayed around the room.

As for my experience making hairpins, the types of flowers you can create are predetermined, and you choose from those options. There are enough varieties, so I don't think you need to worry. I chose the 3,000 yen course, which only had four types available, but it was more than enough for me.

First, I selected from a variety of colorful fabrics that were cut into small pieces to decide on the color of the flower. There were so many options that it took me some time to decide. After I finished choosing, I took my seat, and they carefully explained how to make the hairpin. They also showed me a sample up close, which made it very easy to understand. If I had any questions, they patiently explained things again.

I made a mistake at one point, but they helped me fix that part, which was very helpful. So, you shouldn't have to leave with any mistakes. The instructor was very friendly and had a lot of smiles, which made me feel at ease.

Thanks to them, I was able to create a beautiful hairpin. I'm really glad I went, and I definitely want to visit again.

It feels really great!

Reviewed by: 森ゆき

After getting off the bus, I walked for about five minutes and quietly spotted a sign. It felt more like a private home than a store, which created a lovely atmosphere!

I was able to choose from many different types of fabric, and I was a bit indecisive, haha. Even when I was unsure, they kindly said, "It's okay! Take your time to decide!" This allowed me to choose without feeling rushed. Additionally, while I was creating, they patiently guided me... no matter how many mistakes I made, they fixed everything properly. Thanks to them, I was able to finish a wonderful piece.

I would love to visit again when I have more time. Thank you very much!

I like that everything can be customized to my liking.

Reviewed by: こるに

First, you choose the shape of the flower and the color and pattern of the fabric. There were various levels of difficulty, but since it was my first time, I opted for a relatively simple shape. I browsed through the fabrics, considering where to place each one.

I chose two types of fabric for the outer petals, so I thought about the order in which to arrange them, which required a bit of creativity.

I used tweezers and my fingers to shape everything, but I was a little worried since I'm not very dexterous. However, they made adjustments where things didn't turn out well, so it was fine.

Since I got to choose the decorative part in the center as well, I had a bit of trouble deciding, but after simulating various options, I made my choice.

There were so many types of parts to choose from, which made it a bit overwhelming, but once it was completed, it turned out to look quite nice! Since I could customize everything to my liking, I felt a sense of attachment to it. I heard from the staff that some people choose different fabrics for each petal, but since all the colors and patterns are traditional Japanese styles, it surprisingly harmonizes well and looks interesting.

It was a fun experience that I don't get to have often! Next time, I want to challenge myself with a different shape and pattern!

I’m looking forward to summer!

You can make the same kanzashi as a maiko! I heard about this and quickly decided to use my weekend to go to Kyoto.

I've visited Kyoto many times, but this was my first experience rather than just sightseeing.

As soon as I entered, I was greeted by a lot of handmade kanzashi. They are so beautiful that I couldn't take my eyes off them. The kanzashi made with chirimen fabric really gives off that quintessential Kyoto vibe! First, I had to choose a shape I wanted to make from the examples... I was torn. Everything was so cute and lovely that it was hard to decide. I must have spent about 10 minutes just deciding. In the end, I chose the simplest shape. I realized that I was quite clumsy, and I would have to make this myself. So, I decided to go with something manageable!

Next was choosing the fabric for the petal parts. Again, everything looked so cute! Could such small pieces of fabric really be used for that kanzashi? I selected a single kanzashi, a pair of kanzashi, and a brooch, and finally, the work began. The instructor carefully taught each of us how to shape the petals, making it easy to understand! Since there were only a few of us at a small table, the teacher was able to keep an eye on everyone's work, ensuring there were no mistakes and sharing tips, which helped even someone as clumsy as me.

I made many petals and combined them... Although it turned out a bit different from the example, I managed to make something that looked good with some adjustments! Once completed, they neatly placed it in a case for me.

I did it! It's small, but it's just like the ones the maiko wear!

Making it myself allowed me to choose the shape, fabric, and color combinations, making it truly one of a kind, which is so exciting.

This summer, let's wear yukata and go to a festival!
