I participated in a course to experience four types of wagashi (Japanese sweets). Before making them, they explained what kind of wagashi we would create, the meanings of each name, and the ingredients, which was very educational. The experience was taught very carefully, so even the more difficult creations were enjoyable to make. Since it is a high-end wagashi shop, the taste of the finished products was exceptional. I had a great time.

We participated as a group of four and were assigned one table, allowing us to enjoy the experience without worrying about others. Many participants were in pairs, sitting across from each other at long tables. The instructor showed us how to make each of the four types of wagashi by creating samples, which made it fun even though we were inexperienced. The professional creations were impressive in both shape and color! At the end, we got to enjoy one piece with matcha, leaving us satisfied from both eating and making. It's interesting how, despite using the same ingredients and methods, everyone's creations turned out differently.

We had such an amazing time! The class was very therapeutic and even though we didn't speak Japanese, the instructor made it easy to follow. We were all able to make beautiful sweets and we shared a lot of laughs and smiles in the process. Note that the sweets are all filled with red bean, so if you're not a fan have someone in mind to give them to. They don't last very long though, so keep that in mind as well! If you don't speak Japanese I'd highly suggest going with friends since you'll be able to communicate with someone and figure the steps out together. This class definitely enhanced my trip to Japan and I highly recommend it!!

I think why we enjoyed it so much is because of the teacher. He explained everything so clearly and concisely. If we were doing something wrong he explained how to do it right. Our son looked more like udon but hey it was our first time. You need to speak Japanese for this one to get the full experience. We did four "cultural experience" classes this time and this was my favorite.

As english only speakers, the instructor was able to speak english to help us understand the process. The experience was very hands on from grinding the buckwheat into flour to making, rolling and cutting the dough. The instructor was very helpful. Understanding that his english was not as good as his Japanese (as the Japanese couple had a much longer explanation), we felt that he was very informative and gave us the information that was both interesting, informative with a good sense of humor that made the experience very fun.

While in Kyoto we attended this cookery class at the WAK building. Myself and my partner were fortunate enough to have the class to ourselves, and our teacher Mieko was friendly, patient and attentive as she explained the recipes. She also gave us an insight into traditional domestic architecture and the history of Japanese food, past and present. The food was delicious. We are both vegan and Mieko adjusted the class accordingly to suit our dietary requirements. It was a highlight of our holiday in Japan and we would highly recommend.
Dear Alan-san, Thank you so much for posting your comments on our cooking course. It was our pleasure to have you with us, and Mieko was delighted to hear your comments. Thank you for choosing our cooking course. We look forward to having you again in the future. Sincerely, WAK JAPAN

Overall, everyone at the shop is very kind. There was no pressure to buy any of the shop's products, just a focus on making traditional Japanese sweets. However, since there was only one craftsman teaching, when there are many participants, the first group to receive instruction has to wait until the last group finishes... which creates a time lag. I thought it would be nice if they could increase the number of instructors during those times.

As most of the good things we did, my wife found this soba workshop and I booked it for the two of us. It is in Gion, right off the Kiyomizudera temple. It was a wonderful experience. 4 couples attended the workshop, 2 of them were Japanese. We started with grinding real soba with a grindstones, then the chef patiently demonstrated and helped us to make the soba noodles. It was very interesting and enjoyable and each couple had its own tools. I can't even explain what a refreshing change it was from the regular sightseeing. Finally the soba we've made was taken for cooking, and eventually we all got to sit and dine in the house, eating the soba noodles we made, grinding real wasabi roots - a wonderful meal we well.

It was a great experience. I followed the workshop with my mother, and there was also one other Japanese couple.
Although the explanation of the workshop itself was in Japanese, the sensei explained everything by hand. We got a piece of paper on which we had the information of the sweets in English (so that we could understand what we were going to make). We made 2 sugary flat sweets and afterwards, we made 3 different Japanese sweets: sakura, autumn leaf and one other (see pictures). When the sweets were made, we got a macha tea so that we could eat the last Japanese sweet we've made. I would definitely recommend this workshop, even if you don't understand Japanese.
