I was amazed by the craftsmanship and had a great experience.

While I was interested, I challenged myself to make wagashi for the first time this time. We made four types of wagashi, and first, the craftsman explained each one. Then it was time for the main event. Everyone participated in unison, so it was reassuring even for those attending alone.

Using various tools like a rolling pin and triangular sticks, shaping them into forms like ginkgo leaves and chrysanthemums was quite challenging. While it took participants a long time to make one, the craftsman was able to create many in the time it took for one participant to finish.

For the fourth piece, we were able to taste it on the spot with matcha after making it. Before I knew it, about an hour had passed. Half of the participants were Japanese, and the other half were from overseas. It was a great opportunity to interact with people from abroad.

Making Japanese sweets for the first time.

Reviewed by: ブレア

The location of the shop was a bit hard to find. There is a similar shop nearby that makes traditional Japanese sweets, so be careful when heading there by bus.

After changing into aprons, the experience began. We quickly moved along to make four types of Japanese sweets in one hour. There were about 20 participants, and since there were many foreigners, the teacher couldn't give us much individual attention. I wondered if I was doing the steps correctly while making the sweets. Compared to smaller classes, this one didn't provide the same level of detailed instruction for each person.

One of the sweets we made was enjoyed on the spot with matcha. It was very delicious, and it turned out to be a satisfying experience.

A cultural experience that reveals the delicacy of Japanese people.

Reviewed by: Misa

I went with my foreign friends and my son. We received an explanation about wagashi (Japanese sweets) in English, but the experience itself didn't have English support, which might have made it a bit difficult for my foreign friends to understand. However, since we mostly just watched the staff and mimicked what they did, I think it wasn't a big problem.

The one-hour experience went by quickly as we made four different types of wagashi, progressing through each one smoothly. The base of the wagashi was pre-made, and we focused on shaping the dough into the required forms. It was more challenging than I expected, and my foreign friends were surprised and impressed by the Japanese attention to detail in making wagashi, especially the 360-degree appearance.

My son is 10 years old, but since his hands are smaller compared to adults, he found it a bit difficult to shape the sweets using his palms. However, he was very satisfied to eat what he made.

You can take the wagashi home, but since they don't last long in the summer and have no preservatives, you need to eat them the same day. My son wanted to take some home to his grandmother, but that was difficult. Additionally, since we were traveling, I was worried about carrying them around in the hot summer.

Traditional Japanese Sweets Making Experience in Arashiyama

Fun sweets-making class!

Reviewed by: Heather

It was nice getting to make various traditional Japanese sweets. The instructor did a good job of explaining how to make the various pastries and you are able to make out what you need to do, even if you don't speak Japanese. It would have been fun to make the ingredients from scratch, but then the course would have been much longer, so all the main ingredient were pre-made for us. Our treats came out pretty good, but the only downside is that you have to eat then by the end of the following day, but ours made it another day in the fridge.

I participated with my niece and mother. We made one type of dried sweets and three pieces of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). There was a flyer with pictures, and I was really worried about whether we could create something so amazing, but we managed to make some rather clumsy sweets. The instructor, a skilled artisan, taught us while making the sweets himself. We packed two pieces of wagashi in a box to take home. One was enjoyed with matcha (thin tea). It was a very good experience.

Make Fresh Soba the Traditional Way in Gion

Must go!!!!!!

Reviewed by: Margot

So worth the money, you get to grind the buckwheat, mix into a dough, roll it out, cut it up. Which sounds simple but it's so delightfully intense. The sensei is so nice and patient, we didn't speak much Japanese but he is great at demonstrating and miming what language failed to communicate. The one and only downside is that we didn't get to cook the soba ourselves, but since these guys are professionals, it makes sense for them to do that simple part. Before you eat, you grind fresh wasabi from the root, which tastes different than any other wasabi- and honestly I don't usually like wasabi. Seriously it's a delicious and authentic experience I would repeat in a heartbeat. They take tons of photos with your phone or camera while you do it too so it doesn't get dirty and you have the whole experience documented. It's not marked on the outside, but it's located right where the map says it is so its an easy find.

  • The end product

  • Chopping the soba noodles

  • Rolling out the dough

  • All finished, ready to cook

I challenged myself to make traditional Japanese sweets with my mother!

Reviewed by: RiN

As a memory of my trip, I tried my hand at making wagashi (Japanese sweets). You can make a total of four types. The first one is easy! Just roll out the dough and cut it into shapes. The difficulty increases a bit with each subsequent one. Being clumsy, I had to ask the teacher for a little help! My mother said, "It's unfair that you got help!" so I replied, "I can't do it, so there's no choice!!" Since I stated the facts, she didn't say anything after that (laughs). Thanks to the teacher, I successfully completed three items. I realized once again how amazing artisans are, as things didn't go as smoothly as I hoped. It was fun to experience making wagashi, something I can't do in my daily life. If I have the chance, I would like to try again!!

Lastly, about the store's location, it's as shown on the map. It's relatively close to the nearest station, but honestly, I felt anxious about whether I was on the right path. There are few landmarks, so you might feel uneasy, but it's okay. As long as you don't make a wrong turn, just walk straight, and you'll see the store on your left!

Making seasonal wagashi (Japanese sweets)

Reviewed by: アララ

I participated with a friend to create memories in Kyoto, making autumn-themed dry sweets and camellia flower wagashi. The craftsmen demonstrated for each group, but there’s a big difference between watching and actually doing it... It was surprisingly difficult. However, the wagashi we made ourselves and the matcha were the best, and it was a very enjoyable experience. I was also happy to be able to take the remaining wagashi home as souvenirs. Since the motifs change with each season, I thought it would be nice to participate again in a different season if I have the chance.

Traditional Japanese Sweets Making Experience in Arashiyama

First time making Japanese Sweets

Reviewed by: Yo-Da

As I sometimes make Western sweets but hardly make Japanese sweets, I made a reservation for this interesting experience.
It is kind of far from the center of Arashiyama, but it was a very superb store of Japanese sweets.

On the day for which I made a reservation, there were college students from Taiwan who were visiting to commemoratw their graduation, and about 20 people were there.
As they did not know Japanese, I was wondering how the teacher was going to teach, but a man who makes the Japanese sweets came to them and taught them how to prepare the sweets. They were so happy and excited. As for me, I am a clumsy person, but I was able to make a relatively satisfying Japanese confectionery.
I made three fresh sweets, hydrangea, fringed pink, and tsuyunosato (name of confectionery), and a Kizato, which looks like it was clipped. The wagashi are very delicate, but since the confectionery maker taught us one by one, even a person like me could make it. Using a spatula and cloth is also an interesting experience.
Furthermore, making method also differs a little for each type of confectionery, which was fun.
After making, you can taste the confectionery you made with green tea at the store. You can also bring back some other confectionery too. I'm so glad I could take some as a souvenir. I want to make these again!

First, making wagashi (Japanese sweets).

Reviewed by: よーだ

Although I occasionally make Western sweets, I rarely have the opportunity to make Japanese sweets, so I decided to make a reservation for an interesting experience. It was a bit far from the center of Arashiyama, but it was a wonderful Japanese sweets shop.

When I made my reservation, there happened to be around 20 Taiwanese university students there for their graduation trip. Since they didn't understand the language, I was curious about how they would be taught, but the Japanese sweets artisan came around to show us how to make the sweets up close. Everyone seemed to be having a great time!

I’m not very skilled, but I was able to make some Japanese sweets that I was quite satisfied with. I made three types of wagashi (hydrangea, dianthus, and dew of the village) and kizatō (a type of cut-out sweet). The world of delicate Japanese sweets is intricate, but they teach you each step carefully, so even someone like me could do it. Using a spatula and cloth to make the sweets was a very refreshing experience.

Each type had slightly different methods, which made it fun. After finishing the sweets, we could enjoy them on the spot with matcha. I got to eat the sweets I made along with the matcha, and I could take the other sweets home as souvenirs. It was great! I definitely want to try making them again!
