Arrive at the mountains and begin your journey upwards through the temples.
Visit the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon Buddhist sect, home to Japan's largest zen rock garden, Banryutei. Banryutei features 140 granite stones representing dragons descending from clouds to protect the temple.

Stroll the grounds between and among 19 grand structures that represent a massive Buddhist mandala.

See the massive collection of historical artworks and artifacts housed inside the museum. Hundreds of the displays are registered as national treasures, and about eight percent of all the certified national treasures of Japan are kept here.

Enjoy an overnight stay, and taste the traditional shojin ryori, special Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. An optional tour to Okunoin Temple at night is available with an English speaking monk for 1500 JPY per person.
Walk the two kilometer path towards the mausoleum of the temple founder, Kukai. The path is flanked by the largest cemetary in Japan, where the remains of political and religious leaders, as well as common families, are kept.
Enjoy a rare chance to see the early morning rituals at a Buddhist temple, including a prayer procession and sesame burning.

Depart for Namba once you have descended the mountain home of the many temples.
