This was my third visit to Yakushima, and my first time at Yakusugi Land. Our guide was Mr. Ichikawa from YNAC Classic. I was moved by his wealth of knowledge and love for Yakushima's nature, making for an inspiring half-day experience. He not only provided thorough explanations at a relaxed pace but also ensured that participants could fully immerse themselves in nature by being mindful of the surroundings. Although the weather was unfortunately poor all day, it added to the mystical atmosphere of Yakushima's forest, creating an extraordinary experience of walking in the rain while wearing rain gear. The YNAC Classic tour is not just about sharing knowledge of nature; it conveys the "messages" that nature holds, truly making it an "interpretation" tour. The bento wrapped in bamboo leaves from Kamogawa, which included fried chicken and fish paste made from flying fish, was also fantastic!

At 3:50 AM, we were picked up by Takezuki Ryokan, went around in order, picked up our bento along the way, and arrived at the trailhead. Before departure, we had a meal and ate about half of our onigiri, then started with our impromptu team.
Our team's guide helped us acclimate by taking it slow on the trolley path. At each point, he provided explanations about the history, the formation of Yakushima, and its endemic species, along with occasional conversations. We also took some great photos, and everyone was satisfied. Although I participated alone, I was well taken care of by the younger and senior members, as well as newlyweds.
After finishing the 8 kilometers on the trolley, the 2 kilometers of ascent were breathless, but when we met Wilson and Jomon Sugi, everyone in the team had wonderful expressions. I heard that there used to be a route very close to Jomon Sugi, but now, for the sake of Jomon Sugi and the visitors, they’ve created a space to look up from a little distance and made it possible to view it from the side. They are also maintaining the area daily, including fallen Yakusugi due to old age. It might change again by the time I come back.
In the end, the tour was enjoyable, and I gained a lot of energy. Thank you very much.

トロッコ8キロが終わって登りの2キロは、息切らし
ながらだったけど、ウィルソンや、縄文杉にあって、チームみんな、とってもいい顔。
以前は縄文杉のすぐ近くにルート作ってあったそうだが、今は、縄文杉の為、みにくる人達の為に
少し離れて見上げるとこにスペース作ってあったり、新しく横からみれるようにとか、
寿命で倒れてしまった屋久杉など、日々整備してくださってる。次回来る時また変わってるかも。
最後にツアー楽しく、エネルギーもらいました。

I had always wanted to go to Yakushima but kept putting it off. I suddenly realized that nothing would change if I continued like this, so I did some research and signed up for this tour.
As a result, I had to retire partway through. I still had confidence in my stamina, but my leg muscles couldn't keep up, so I gave up on Jomon Sugi, considering the return trip.
However, the guide who accompanied me down the mountain answered all my questions and shared various details about Yakushima. They also paid close attention to my walking pace, and I actually felt that it was a good thing I had to retire! The return trip wasn't too tiring, and it became an unforgettable experience. Thank you so much!

ずっと屋久島へ行きたいと思いながらズルズル先延ばしを続けていましたが、このままでは何も変わらないとふと思い立ち、色々調べてこのツアーに申し込みました。
結果、途中リタイア。。体力にはまだ自信があったのですが足の筋肉が追いつかず、戻りの事も考えて縄文杉は諦めました。
でも一緒に下山していただいたガイドさんから、疑問に思った事や屋久島に関する色んな事を詳しく教えて頂き、また歩くペースも細かく配慮してもらい逆にリタイヤして良かった！と思えるくらいでした。帰り道はあまり疲れも感じず、忘れられない経験になりました。本当に本当にありがとうございました。
途中あいにくの雨でしたがそれさえ幻想的でした。このツアーに参加できて良かったなと思います。

To my surprise, it was a clear day, and Jomon Sugi was amazing. I was worried about causing trouble for others due to my age and physical condition, but somehow I made it back. If I had gone alone, I probably wouldn't have made it.
The 8.5 km trek along the trolley path was tough. There were times when I felt like giving up. As someone with a fear of heights, crossing the bridge without a handrail was difficult; I was almost in tears, no, I crossed while crying.
Thanks to the guide's pacing, I managed to get through. There were several water sources along the way, so I didn't have to worry about drinking water. In fact, I should have reduced my water intake.
It was the best experience!

年齢、体力的に周りに迷惑かけたらどうしようと思いながら行きましたが、何とか帰ってこれました。きっと個人で行ってたら辿り着かなかったかも。

高所恐怖症の私には手すり無しの橋が辛かったです、もう泣きそう、いや泣きながら渡りました。

I fully enjoyed Yakushima, visiting Jomon Sugi, Shiratani Unsuikyo, and Taiko Rock, even though I was a bit greedy with my itinerary.
The trek to Jomon Sugi took from just before 6 AM until after 4:30 PM. Although I had no prior mountain climbing experience and I’m over 60, I prepared by hiking at places like Takao Mountain for a year, and I was able to complete the hike. There were 8 people on the tour, and our kind guide showed us around, allowing us to fully appreciate Jomon Sugi, Yakusugi, and the nature of Yakushima.
The next day, we visited Shiratani Unsuikyo and Taiko Rock from around 9 AM to about 2:30 PM. It was shorter and easier than the Jomon Sugi hike, but by the end, my legs were screaming from two consecutive days of walking (laughs). There were 4 people on this tour as well, and our guide was also very kind. Shiratani Unsuikyo was even more beautiful than the photos, and Taiko Rock offered a breathtaking view. I think it would be good to take a day off in between.

縄文杉へは6時前から16時半過ぎまでの行程でした。還暦過ぎで登山は未経験でしたが、1年前から高尾山などで足慣らししておき、完歩できました。
当日ツアーは8名、親切なガイドさんにいろいろ案内してもらい、縄文杉はじめ屋久杉や屋久島の自然を満喫しました。
翌日は白谷雲水峡と太鼓岩、9時頃から14時半頃まで。屋久杉よりは距離短く楽でしたが、最後は2日連続の歩きで足が悲鳴(笑)
ツアーは4名、こちらも親切なガイドさんで、白谷雲水峡は写真以上に綺麗で、太鼓岩は絶景でした。
間に1日休みを入れると良いと思います。

I visited Yakushima for the first time in late May and pre-booked this tour. Since it was my first time, I was worried about the cold, so I packed various jackets in my backpack, but they weren't necessary! There was one guide for six members, and half of the group had trekking poles, which I thought were necessary since we were climbing steep areas! It was quite challenging, but climbing while enjoying the beautiful scenery and fresh air felt wonderful. The Jomon Sugi was breathtaking, and I truly felt it deserved its status as a World Heritage site!

と色々上着をリュックに入れて行きましたが必要ありませんでした！1人のガイドさんに6人のメンバーでしたがスティックは半数のメンバーが持っておりやはり険しい山場をお上るので必要だと思いました！なかなか過酷でしたが、素敵な景色と美味しい空気を吸いながら登って行くのでとても気持ちわかったです。縄文杉は圧巻でさすが世界遺産だと思いました！

I participated alone on May 3, 2024. Before going, I was unsure whether to join a tour, but in the end, having a guided tour was definitely the right choice! Not only could I trust the guide with all the details like precautions and time management, but I also got to hear various explanations at each destination, making the long journey a fulfilling experience. Moreover, thanks to the guide's consideration regarding the overall pace, break timings, and efforts to keep things engaging, I felt that my fatigue was significantly alleviated. I absolutely recommend that first-time participants join a tour!

I experienced this with my parents in their 50s. Our family doesn't usually have a habit of exercising, but we used to play sports. We were fortunate with the weather, as it didn't rain. The fresh greenery was beautiful, and we were able to enjoy the hike while looking at the plants. I did get a few blisters, but thanks to the rental shoes, I was able to climb comfortably. From the day before yesterday, they provided detailed information about what to bring and asked if I had any questions, which made me feel at ease for my participation.
Instead of guiding from the entrance, they started guiding us from the moment they picked us up, sharing information about Yakushima while we were in the car. They took a lot of photos and skillfully captured panoramic shots according to the situation, and their engaging storytelling made for an enjoyable time. I think opinions about the tour company and the guide can vary. Compared to another tour that contacted us the day before and the day before that, providing detailed information about what to bring, the meeting place, and the time, we did not receive any communication regarding the Jomon Sugi trekking until the day before. Since we were scheduled to participate in the Shiratani trekking that afternoon, there was a possibility that we wouldn't have reception, so we had to reach out ourselves.
On the day of the tour, after getting off the shuttle bus, while other guides were calling out names to gather participants, our guide did not call out names, leaving participants to search for the guide. While it’s good to be cautious for safety during the trek, the way it was communicated was harsh and rude. At the very least, we are customers, and although we did not argue at the time and complied, we were criticized despite not being slow or unprepared.
I still feel upset about it. If they want to project professionalism, they might consider developing a more engaging way of communicating.

安全のために道中で注意をされるのはよいのですが、言い方がきついし、口が悪い。少なくとも私たちは客ですし、その場で反論はせずに、従っていましたが、もたもたしていたわけでもないのに、文句ばかり言われた。
今も気分が悪い。プロ感を出すなら、もう少し、楽しませるような話術も身に着けてもよいのでは。

I have always wanted to visit Yakushima at least once in my life, and I finally made my first landing! I also participated in the trekking to Jomon Sugi, which was more challenging than I imagined, and it turned into a climb in the rain. The sense of accomplishment when I reached the top was incredible!
Since we were trekking while listening to the guide's extensive knowledge, it was very stimulating for me, who knew so little. Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful experience.
I also managed to get into the izakaya I wanted to visit and was able to enjoy delicious fish. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat the "kubore saba" during my stay, so I definitely want to come back again!

I had always wanted to go trekking to Jomon Sugi in Yakushima while I was still able to walk, and I finally made it happen. I usually walk a lot, so I thought I would be fine, but it was quite the challenge. I was out of breath from the aerobic exercise. Unfortunately, it rained that day...
During our descent at the Wilson stump, we took some photo time, and I still vividly remember the excitement when the guide took our pictures. That heart-shaped photo made all the fatigue disappear!

We usually do light strength training about once or twice a week, but we hadn't been doing much exercise, so we practiced a bit by walking around 8 km, anticipating some light hiking and the trolley path. I had a lot of concerns about my physical stamina, especially since I was looking forward to seeing the Jomon Sugi. However, thanks to our guide, Ando, we were able to go and return safely!
His precise advice on when to take breaks, use the restroom, replenish with salt and sugar, and do stretches was very helpful. The conversation flowed without interruption; we talked not only about Yakushima and the Yakusugi but also about work and dramas, making it feel like we were spending time with a friend.
We were also able to see Yakuzaru and Yakushika, making for a very fulfilling Jomon Sugi trekking experience. Thank you so much, Andy!

普段は週1〜2くらい軽い筋トレをする程度。
運動という運動はしていなかったので、軽い登山や、トロッコ道を想定して8kmほど歩いたりと、少しだけ練習してから臨みました。
憧れの縄文杉でしたが、とにかく体力的な不安が大きかったです。
ですが、ガイドの安藤さんのおかげで、無事に行って帰ってくることができました！
あとどれくらい歩いたら休憩します、トイレです、塩分糖分補給しましょう、ストレッチしてくださいなど、的確なアドバイスが良かったのだと思います。
話も途切れることなく、屋久島、屋久杉の話はもちろんですが、仕事やドラマの話まで、まるで友達のように楽しく過ごす事ができました。
ヤクザルやヤク鹿も見ることができ、とても充実した縄文杉トレッキングになりました。

It was just the two of us and a person living overseas, along with our guide, so we were able to walk at a relaxed pace. Unlike the previous day's sightseeing, the entire route took us through a lush forest that felt like a power spot, with sunlight filtering through the trees. We arrived at the moss-covered forest, where stones and fallen trees were completely covered in moss. The scenery was just like something out of "Princess Mononoke." Nearby, the spring water we collected in a plastic bottle was delicious. Since we had rental shoes, we could enjoy the experience without worrying about getting wet or dirty!

Considering the low water temperature and water volume, the tour was changed from a hidden waterfall to river trekking. Thanks to the clear weather over the past few days, the river water was very clear and the weather was truly pleasant. We leisurely paddled the kayak (it was my first time, but I managed just fine), had lunch on a sandbank, and took a little nap before heading out for the afternoon trekking.
For the trekking, we changed rivers, put on wet suits, and walked upstream on a rocky riverbed. It was fun to spot little fish and play in the water! Having a guide made it possible for us to enjoy ourselves with peace of mind. Thank you very much. Sunscreen is essential for your face, ears, the tops of your hands, and the tops of your feet (and reapplying too!).

I participated in the Jomon Sugi 1-day and Shiratani Unsuikyo half-day course with a friend. Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy or rainy both days, which wasn't ideal, but listening to our veteran guide with 17 years of experience while enjoying beautiful scenery made the 1.5 days of trekking over 50,000 steps fly by. (Although the weather wasn't great, the rain actually made the moss vibrant, allowing us to truly experience the charm of Yakushima.)
On the second day’s Shiratani Unsuikyo tour, since there were only my friend and me, the guide kindly adjusted the tour content flexibly. ① Initially, the tour was scheduled to start at 5 AM, but due to the heavy rain the day before, there was a possibility of cancellation. The guide suggested we wait until 8 AM to decide whether to go to Shiratani Unsuikyo or do some sightseeing on the island. ② Although the tour could proceed, due to the unfortunate weather, we didn’t go to Taiko Rock, where the view isn’t good in the rain, and instead turned back at the mossy forest, arranging to do some sightseeing on the island until our flight. (お天気には恵まれなかったですが、むしろ、雨のお陰で苔が生き生きしていて、本当の屋久島の魅力を味わえたと思います。)
2日目の白谷雲水峡ツアーは、参加者が私と友人の2人だけということで、ガイドさんのご厚意で、ツアーの内容を柔軟にアレンジしていただきました。①当初は5時にツアー開始予定でしたが、前日の大雨の影響で催行中止の可能性があり、8時の発表まで待ってから白谷雲水峡に行くか、島内観光にするか決めようとご提案いただきました。②催行はできたものの、あいにくのお天気だったので、雨では眺望が良くない太鼓岩までは行かず、苔むす森で折り返し、フライトまでは島内観光するという、アレンジまでしていただきました。お陰で、ランチに念願の首折れサバを食べることでき、大満足でした！
津曲さん、臨機応変なご対応のお陰で、濃厚で一生の思い出になる1日半を過ごすことができました。ありがとうございました！屋久中(屋久島中毒)になりそうです！

The rental of shoes, raincoats, and backpacks was handled efficiently upon arrival at the airport, and the Mizuno raincoat fit well. The shoes also fit my feet perfectly, and I was quite satisfied. (The waterproofing of the raincoat was a bit lacking, though!)
You can also arrange for a bento in advance, so you can enjoy the day without worries.
I was confident in my physical strength and considered going alone, but in the end, I think it was the right choice to have a guide. The guides were attentive, making sure to move aside when faster people were coming from behind on both the trolley path and the hiking trail, but there wasn't much space to avoid others, and it felt like we couldn't really shorten the time that much. Additionally, the number of buses to the trailhead is limited, so going with a tour seems to be the safer option.
If I had to suggest something, it would be great if the members could be arranged to have similar levels of physical strength and walking speed.
靴・レインコート・バックパックのレンタルは、空港到着時に手際よく渡してもらえましたし、ミズノのレインコート。靴も足にしっかりフィットしていて十分満足です。（レインコートの防水はやや甘さがありましたが！）
お弁当も事前に手配できるので、心配なく当日を迎えられます。
体力に自信があったこともあり、一人で行くことも考えましたが、結果的にガイドさんに案内いただいたことは正解だったと思います。
トロッコ道も登山道もガイドさんたちが後ろから早い人がくると避けるよう気を配ってくれていますが、それほど人を避けられるスペースはなく、そこまで時間を短縮できない気がしました。
また、登山口まで行くバスの本数や時間は限られているため、ツアーで行った方が間違いない気がしました。
強いていえば、メンバーは同じ体力・歩行スピードが同じレベルになるよう工夫いただけると良いかと思いました。

I participated in a trekking tour during my first visit to Yakushima. Both the Jomon Sugi trekking and the Shiratani Unsuikyo trekking were blessed with great weather, providing the perfect time to be healed by nature.
