I arrived at Kochi Station just before 3 PM and had booked a "Sakamoto Ryoma" tour from 3 PM for three hours. Since I arrived a little before 3 PM, I first saw the mechanical clock at Harimaya Bridge, then went to Katsurahama to see the Ryoma statue, and afterward visited the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum. I toured Tono using a rental car, visiting places like the Denshōen and Kojin Shrine, but there were so many attractions that I lacked confidence in navigating without local knowledge within a limited time. I also felt I wouldn't be able to enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace, so I decided to use a sightseeing taxi.

As a result, I was extremely satisfied. The course included the Five Hundred Arhats, which has a possibility of bear sightings and involves considerable distance for climbing up and down, so they removed that from the itinerary. Instead, they added Furusato Village and Jūtankei to the course.

Even though it was during the Golden Week, we set off at 10 AM, which meant it was relatively uncrowded, allowing us to explore the scenic spots at a relaxed pace. Here are the places we visited and the approximate time spent at each:

Tono Hachiman 20 minutes - Fukusenji 20 minutes - Furusato Village 50 minutes - Hayachine Shrine 20 minutes - Jūtankei 20 minutes - Usudori Shrine, Atago Shrine 20 minutes.

It was 3.5 hours in total, but excluding travel time, we were able to enjoy sightseeing for about 2.5 hours. During the travel, we admired the beautiful fresh green scenery and the driver shared interesting points about Tono, so there was never a dull moment. A 2-hour plan would only allow for a quick trip to Furusato Village and back, so choosing the 3.5-hour plan was definitely the right decision.

The driver was friendly and very kind. He drove safely and casually informed us about the attractions at each stop, which helped us relax. This became one of my wonderful memories of Tono.

On sunny days, it's better to have a hat. Also, since you'll be going up and down the approach, comfortable shoes like sneakers are essential.

遠野観光はレンタカーで市街地に近い伝承園や荒神神社を巡りましたが、他については見どころが沢山あり、土地勘がなく限られた時間内で巡れる自信がなく、また、ゆっくり景色を眺められなさそうだったので観光タクシーを利用しました。

結果、大満足でした。コースに含まれる五百羅漢は熊が出没する可能性があり、登り下りで距離があるため外して頂き、代わりにふるさと村と重湍渓をコースに加えて頂きました。

GW期間中でしたが10時出発にしたため、比較的混雑せず、ゆっくり名勝を巡りました。立ち寄った場所と大凡の時間です。

遠野八幡 20分〜福泉寺 20分〜ふるさと村 50分〜早池峰神社 20分〜重湍渓 20分〜卯子酉神社、愛宕神社 20分

3.5時間でしたが移動を除いて2.5時間はゆっくり観光出来ました。また移動中も美しい新緑の風景を愛でつつ、運転手さんに遠野の見所を聞かせて頂き、退屈する事は皆無でした。2時間程度だとふるさと村に行って帰ってくるくらいの時間なので、3.5時間プランにして正解でした。

運転手さんは気さくでとても優しい方でした。安全運転で行く先々でさりげなく見所についても教えてくださり、リラックス出来ました。遠野の良い思い出の一つになりました。

天気の良い日は帽子があった方が良いです。
また参道を上り下りするのでスニーカーなど歩きやすい靴は必須です。

I had a great time being driven around while listening to the taxi driver's slightly accented stories. It was a hot day, and there were many places I definitely wouldn't have visited if I hadn't signed up for this tour. We were group of friends,all together 12of us. The drivers were fully supportive, although they spoke little English,they tried their best to provide us with information and make our wishes come true.
We did the climb up all the way on Mt Tsurugi,so they had to wait a little longer. In general,we have seen all the sights worth seeing in the 8h tour around Iya valley.
The day was perfect and the drivers even waited with us for the train. We had an amazing time. Definitely,if we go again,we will take the same tour. Mt Tsurugi was the highlight of the day and all other hidden treasures of Iya valley cherries on the top.

The taxi driver is a very nice lady and a good driver. She showed me all the places I wanted to see and more. She even bought us lunch which we enjoyed by the beautiful river side.

The Yosino-gawa is unbeliable emerald green and gorges are scenic. Also wisteria vine bridges (kazura-bashi) are worth visiting. I also liked Nagaro Screcrow Village because those life-sized scarecrow-type dolls are there toiling in the field, waiting at the bus stop etc.

I stayed at Hanamaki Onsen and took the train to Tono, where I used a sightseeing taxi from Tono Station. Since we didn't have much time for our stay, I thought it would be tough to explore on our own, so we decided to use this tour.

In the end, it was a great decision to use the tour! The sightseeing spots are scattered, so without a car, I don't think we could have gone anywhere in just one hour. The driver was also a very nice person, and it was enjoyable to chat with him.

Although it was only an hour, it was a great tour that condensed the highlights. I would love to visit again and take my time.

Good way to see the valley without the stress of finding your way around. The driver was very accommodating and adjusted the trip to my needs. Driver did not know much English but luckily my understanding of Japanese was sufficient to understand what he was saying.
Beautiful scenery but a week later might have able to enjoy all the fall colors.

The Only Way To Do It Right

The Iya Valley is very difficult to tour on your own. Good luck finding a taxi cab or even calling for one. For another part of our journey we tried calling from the Oboke station and we were told it would take an hour for the cab company to send a taxi out to Oboke. For our tour we had Mr. Kotani pick us up at Iya Onsen Hotel and drop us off at the Oboke Station 5 minutes before our train left. He was very precise on timing. We saw the Mankin peeing boy, the single and double vine bridges, the scarecrow village - he even took us to the home of the lady that makes all the "people scarecrows" to meet and greet. We also went to the forest monorail for the 70 minute forest ride. It's difficult to find information on the Forest monorail ride in English - but it was the highlight of my time in Shikoku. The ride takes you on a two person vehicle through a beautiful mountainside forest. Some times the climb or descent angles are 45 to 60 degrees, so even hard to please teenagers who might think the monorail ride may be boring would be pleasantly surprised. Elderly people who may think they will fall out will be glad to know that the seats automatically adjust to support you at the right angle.The single vine bridge is closer to the Oboke station and more picturesque but the double vine bridge is more fun because there is a box pulley as well as a "male" and "female" vine bridge and there is a beautiful waterfall and it is less crowded because it is further away from the station and harder to get to.
There is also a 30 minute easy Yoshino river cruise just north of the Oboke station. It was beautiful. But I would warn anyone who wants to go from Oboke station by foot that it is not a 20 minute walk. It's more like a 25 to 30 minute walk from the station. The Japanese like to say "if run a little" to adjust their time estimates. So it is a 20 minute walk from the station if run a little.
I highly recommend doing this tour especially with a large party.
