In 1953 Panmunjom was where the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement took place, to end the Korean war. Meetings and negotiations between North and South Korea take place here, but it also popular with tourists who wish to stand in this important place in modern military history.

The Third tunnel is one of several tunnels under the North-South Korean border. Running through bedrock, it is believed to have been built by North Korea for a surprise attack on Seoul, although the North declared that it was a coal mine. Despite this claim, it is unlikely that there is coal in this tunnel.
