Fun Sumie Ink Painting Lesson in Tokyo with English Speaking Instructor
Fun, Practical and Relaxing Introduction to Sumie
Activity Date: 2016/08/26 | Posted on: 2016/08/28

The location is close to the station, maybe three minutes from the nearest exit, and the shop itself is easy to find being on the main road. The session itself takes place in the shop/atelier, the walls lined with sumie works on general sale. In the lesson I learnt a little about sumie history, techniques and styles. The instructor speaks English well and is friendly and patient. I painted five small pieces following his example which featured bamboo, Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms and was able to take my attempts home. He gave me good advice and directions to a washi (Japanese paper) store after the session. I recommend the experience to anyone interested in sumie and wanting to give it a try!

Meg

This was again a very tricky place to find, but in a tiny studio there were 6 stations to work at and 6 students. We were given samples to look at and choose from. It was very tricky, but very doable if you choose something simple. Downstairs was a gallery of glass work that was incredible. Very awesome and well run class. Our instructor spoke English!

It was more difficult than I expected.
However, the teacher was kind, and it was fun.
I didn't have enough time, and I wanted to do it more elaborately.

思った以上に難しかったです。
けど、先生も、やさしくて、楽しかったです。
時間が、足りなくて、もっと、凝ってやりたかったくらいでした。

I am not at all artistic, but even I was able to make pretty ink paintings! The teacher was really nice and funny, and the class was the perfect length. He showed me how to do landscapes, which was cool.

My first experience with Edo Kiriko was quite nerve-wracking, but while receiving a lecture, I was able to practice with samples at the beginning, so in the end, I was able to create a satisfying piece!

It took about 90 minutes to complete, and I think even those who are not very skilled can enjoy it. It was a fascinating time that made me want to try creating this pattern... I feel like I could really get into it. This experience sparked my interest in Japanese culture, and I'm really glad I participated.
